Subject: Six Degrees of Prog

Many musicians (prog and otherwise) have been with more bands than I have fingers.

Therefore, in the grand style of "Six Degrees of Separation", I offer the "Six Degrees of Prog".  The object is to link two seemingly unrelated bands via six degrees of band associations.

To start us off, let us start with Arena to Squeeze.

Arena's drummer, Mick Pointer, was with Marillion.
Marillion's bassist, Pete Trewavas, was with Transatlantic.
Transatlantic's vocalist, Neal Morse, was with Spock's Beard.
Spocks Beard's drummer, Nick D'Virglio, was a session player with Genesis on "Calling All Stations"
Genesis' bassist, Mike Rutherford, was with Mike & the Mechanics.
Mike & the Mechanic's vocalist, Paul Carrack, was with Squeeze.

Anyone else want to give it a go?

Actually, what would be fun was if i told you for example that I wanted you to link Genesis with the Mars Volta, and then, if someone (not necessarily you) can do it, then it's his/her turn to challenge others. You know, make it a competition of sorts. Or maybe that was what you were thinking already? :)

I don't think it's possibly to link The Mars Volta with Genesis. Or is it?

I don't know, maybe not from the "regular" member, but possibly through Red hot chili peppers, i don't know. Someone might have worked with someone who worked with tony levin, sometime...  actually, it could be possible, but i don't know RHCP that well. :)

You could link RHCP to Johnny Cash.

From King Crimson to Free :

King Crimson's previous singer and bass player, John Wetton, played in Asia
Asia's keyboard player, Geoff Downes played in Yes (Drama)
Yes' previous drummer, Bill Bruford, was a live session player with Genesis.
Genesis' drummer, Phil Collins, played drums on some tracks for Camel on 'I can See your House from Here'.
Camel's sax and winds player, Mel Collins, played with Bad Company.
Bad Company's lead singer, Paul Rodgers, previously sang in Free.

Got it right, I hope ?

Mars Volta to Genesis:

Mars Volta frequently uses John Fruciante of RHCP
RHCP's bassist Flea played on Alanis Morrisette's debut album

Anyone want to pick it up from there?

Hahaha, I've done this countless times in my head. And I thought I was the only one. Ermm
Anyway, linking TMV to Genesis is very easy:

Omar A. R.-L. has a new project with Damo Suzuki of Can fame (see the news/press releases section)
Holger Czukay played with Can, but also with David Sylvian on some wonderful ambient albums in the late eighites/early nineties
Sylvian, of course, had the Fripp collaborations
Fripp played on PG3
PG was a Genesis man

Ok, try linking Fates Warning with... let's say Jethro Tull. I haven't thought of anything specific, but I think it should be easy.
