Isn't enough?
In the past year and months I saw people on the general forum supporting their inclusion in this site whilst, on the other hand, a different opinion emerged from the collaborators' forum.
It would be interesting to understand what all members think in general.
Here below some positive remarks from the past discussions:
"They should be included more than many bands here..."
"Even in the eighties they kept producing "prog-related" songs with each album they made..."
"It's arguable they COULD be added under 'prog related'..."
"they have their "prog" moments! "Imaginos" is a great album..."
"they deserve to be on here..."
"Albums with prog influence..."
Just for curiosity:
Have you ever seen that animated movie of the 80s: Heavy Metal?
Based on the graphic magazine of the same name, this full-length animated movie runs the gamut of animation styles and futuristic alien story lines. "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" is featured during a segment that might better have fit the song "Sole Survivor". BLue Oyster Cult wrote several songs based on the different stories in the movie, which are on the "Fire of Unknown Origin" album.

Straight up 70's hard rock imo....
The closer they ever get to progressive was on the Imaginos album...
Still, a fine band.

awesome ...simply awesome... and haven't seen that movie since... god
when did it come out. Strongly support their inclusion and most
likely will be adding them after having a bit of an education/refresher
over the last couple of months. Definitely worthy of inclusion
here. Been burning up Secret Treaties recently... love that album.

for what's it's worth Andrew.. I agree ... yet it has been made clear
to the SC's that expansion of Prog Related and Proto Prog is to
continue. In that BOC is a no brainer for PR.. and other.. more
controvesial ones are sure to follow. I don't agree with the
decision at all. I posted my thoughts and my reasons for
disagreeing in the proper places for what good it did, now we do as we

So far I've heard their debut aswell as Tyranny and Mutation (listening

Prog Related based on what I've heard so far.

Excuse me, where and when did Jody ask me? I've just seen this thread for the first time...
By the way, the Queen is very glad to answer.. Of course PR, no question about that. I may be one of BOC's biggest fans here, but I'm not so blinded by my love of them to think about putting them in Art Rock or any other fully prog subgenre. I'm quite ready to add them in the next few days... If anyone (Andrea, for instance... ) wants to write up a bio, I'll credit them at the end of the text. Then we can share the job of adding the albums.
Ah, as regards the movie "Heavy Metal", I also saw it when it came out, over 20 years ago... it also had Black Sabbath's "The Mob Rules" in the soundtrack.

I haven't heard anything from them but the soundtrack you are mentioning. Soundtrack was as awful as the movie, so I say not only they should be never considered as inclusion (I don't care actually), but also every part of that movie should be removed from my memory.

Hi Raffaella.
With the help of some info sources and all the powers of synthesis, this is the bio I can recommend for this site. Feel free to edit and to add whatever is necessary.
Blue Oyster Cult's history:
The members of the band began to come together in the late 1960s, as a band called "Soft White Underbelly", then changed into “Stalk-Forrest Group” in file:///wiki/1968 - - 1968 . The name "Blue Öyster Cult" came from a 1960s poem written by manager file:///wiki/Sandy_Pearlman - - Sandy Pearlman . It was part of his poetry, later used more extensively in their 1988 album file:///wiki/Imaginos - - Imaginos . In Pearlman's poetry, the "Blue Oyster Cult" was a collection of aliens who had to secretly guide Earth's history. The addition of the file:///wiki/Heavy_metal_umlaut - - umlaut above the vocal “o” was suggested by either file:///wiki/Allen_Lanier - - Allen Lanier or Richard Meltzer. Other bands later copied the practice of using umlauts or diacritic marks in their own band logos such as file:///wiki/Mot%25C3%25B6rhead - - Motörhead file:///wiki/M%25C3%25B6tley_Cr%25C3%25BCe - - and file:///wiki/Queensr%25C3%25BFche - - Queensrÿche also . It is the file:///wiki/Alchemy - - alchemical symbol for lead, one of the heaviest of metals. Pearlman considered this, combined with the heavy and distorted guitar sound of the band and coined the description "heavy metal" to describe Blue Öyster Cult's music.
The self-titled debut album file:///wiki/Blue_%25C3%2596yster_Cult_%2528album%2529 - - Blue Öyster Cult was released in 1972. Its striking black&white cover featured the now famous hook & cross symbol prominently which the band adopted as their logo and one of their most famous tracks to date: “Cities on Flame With Rock and Roll”. The second record file:///wiki/Tyranny_and_Mutation - - Tyranny and Mutation was built on the first album's basis moved towards harder (The Black side) and richer sounds (The Red side). After that, the band aimed to make an album with more emotional impact for their third outing. When file:///wiki/Secret_Treaties - - Secret Treaties was released in 1974, it gained critical acclaim and it's still now by many considered their most “proggy” effort of the seventies with such songs as “Astronomy” and “Flaming Telepaths”.
file:///wiki/Agents_of_Fortune - - Then came Agents of Fortune (first gold record) that contained their most famous track ever " file:///wiki/%2528Don%2527t_Fear%2529_The_Reaper - - (Don't Fear) The Reaper " which reached #12 on the US Billboard charts. For the follow-up, file:///wiki/Spectres_%2528album%2529 - - Spectres , the band worked to try to come up with an even better record. For a lot of hardcore fans Agents was too "soft" and Spectres was even softer! Others, though, found the diversity of songwriting on Spectres a pleasant experience. For the next album file:///wiki/Mirrors_%2528album%2529 - - Mirrors, the majority of fans felt the record was far too pop and commercial although the record does have some songs that many fans consider great, including "The Vigil" and "The Great Sun Jester,". Than, BÖC’s decided to get back to "being BÖC" rather than trying to write with the commercial hit machine in mind and released the critically acclaimed file:///wiki/Cult%25C3%25B6saurus_Erectus - - Cultösaurus Erectus . Critics wrote that Birch (who worked also with Black Sabbath) brought out the best in the band, with clean and polished production and a certain classic as "Black Blade". Birch was again in the producer's seat for the next record, file:///wiki/Fire_of_Unknown_Origin - - Fire of Unknown Origin . This album included the classic "Burnin’ For You”. But was only with “Veterans of the Psychic Wars” and with “Joan Crawford” that the band's proggy vein was revealed. Later, after minor success as file:///wiki/The_Rev%25C3%25B6lution_by_Night - - The Revölution by Night (1983) and file:///wiki/Club_Ninja - - Club Ninja file:///wiki/The_Rev%25C3%25B6lution_by_Night - - (1986) and a serie of departures (Albert and Joe Bouchard, Allen Lanier), the band reunited to complete a 20 years long coveted project titled Imaginos, possibly their most prog at all with many guest appearences. Of the many, Robby Krieger of the Doors and a certain Joe Satriani.
Their live shows were also exciting as the four live albums that grace us and, in particular, file:///wiki/On_Your_Feet_or_on_Your_Knees - - On Your Feet or on Your Knees (1975), file:///wiki/Some_Enchanted_Evening_%2528album%2529 - - Some Enchanted Evening (1979) and Extraterrestrial Live (1982).
In the late 1990s, BÖC are continuing to perform. Two studio albums have been released, file:///wiki/Heaven_Forbid - - Heaven Forbid and file:///wiki/Curse_of_the_Hidden_Mirror - - Curse of the Hidden Mirror (1998 and 2001), followed by another live record and DVD.

I love BOC.
As we all know their most progressive period in the Black and White period since the three covers from this era were indeed black and white.
Great Band, not meant for PA though.

Prog Related isn't a Prog category. Band in Prog Related are not Prog
bands. This is primarily why I think the category should be removed.
However, as it isn't likely to get removed any time soon, we could
aswell continue adding Hard Rock bands with Prog moments. Queen are
already there, it would be strange not to include other bands in a
similair vein.

No. BOC is a borderline case for inclusion. Not prog and barely prog-related.
We have enough trouble adding full-blown prog bands without having to suffer huge upheavals everytime a controversial group gets added >> Iron Maiden, My Dying Bride etc... Even my inclusion of Santana (undisputably prog, no matter what idiots who do not know their works have to say) caused waves. This is plainly sickening and always takes so much energy and waste of precious time
Furthermore they were vastly rejected by the collabs in a poll (check it out Andrea ) and there are many more priorities than such prog-related-related-related-related entries as BOC

As much as it pains me to admit it, I think Hugues is right. We have already enough trouble as things are, seen as the policy concerning the additions of prog-related bands is far from clear, without courting further controversy by adding a band like BOC. This time, I'll keep what I think about the whole issue for myself - especially as concerns the notion of what constitutes 'prog', which seems to be fluid to say the least.

This site needs more cowbell.
And regarding an earlier comment... Personally I don't see Prog Related as a "non-Prog" category; I see it as a "quasi-Prog" category. Of course what is Prog is often in the ear of the behearer. I also see it as a necessary category for a site that wants to be the biggest Prog database out there. This is more of an album oriented than band oriented site too. What if, for instance, the related category was removed and the first two Alan Parsons' albums were lost (many see them as Prog).
I applaud BOC's inclusion as a cowbell-related band.

LedZep
Uriah Heep
