Max has added the facility to browse the latest MP3 additions directly by adding a Streaming Media Player as the centre-piece of the Front page.
The last 25 added Mp3s are available to play via this facility:
Currently available is some electronic progressive music by the likes of Conrad Scnitzler,& Bernard Xolotl, Steve Wilson's IEM project and some Indo prog/Raga by Shakti/McLaughlin and also the legendary Third Ear Band.
Of course this selection will change when yours truly gets round to adding more tracks (currently a backlog of about 20-30 tracks)
I think this is a good idea and may encourage new bands to send us their music and get added to the Archives.

Positioning isn't the greatest, but surely not to the bottom of things.
It's a fine addition to the outlook.

I think it is in the right place if the tracks change every now and then, optherwise it would not have much scense...

I'm not afraid for static content, it's just that this MP3 box is too big to be at the top. On my 1024x768 notebook (yeah, it's an oldie, but it still works) it takes up too much space. Especially since I only visit the home page to check out the latest reviews, which is my way to discover new bands and albums.
It could be a matter of getting used to though - and it's still a nice addition.

I agree re the positioning. For me, it is too intrusive, devaluing the reviews which are pushed significantly further down the page.
|
Posted By: Tasartir
Date Posted: October 30 2006 at 14:23
I think it should be moved as well, I think it actually takes away from the overall look of the site (which is great by the way). I don't think it should be the first thing a first-time visitor should see when entering the site, he should, instead, see the reviews because that's the main attraction of this site or at least it is for me. I think that maybe if you move it around a little it would look much better.

Good idea!
Could the word "download" be removed though? - it's misleading.
I also agree with the positioning - this is far from ideal. The ideal position would be somewhere on the side IMO, but that wouldn't fit... maybe it could be edited (make the cover smaller and the room for text shorter, for instance) to make it fit?

Errr... two points:
re-positioning to the right side, as spotted by others. (1)
change randomly the mp3 to allow visitors notice all other mp3 streaming available in PA. (2) In this case, the word "Latest" should be erased.

Great idea guys!
I agree with Guigo. It maybe an idea to have a random tracklist everyday, if that is possible?
Obviously, having the facility to hear new tracks is great, but some people may want to hear tracks that have been there for ages.
Having said that, I'm waiting on Astrid Proll - Torso to be added (as I know Chamberry sent it to Tony), so it'd be nice to see that on the list

First of all, thanks to M@x for adding that streaming player. It's a great idea. I hope people will discover new bands with it like Red Sparowes, Astrid Pröll and others.

Agreed.
How about moving it to where the "advertising" box is? We can move those adds to the end of the 100 album list.

Wow, that was a surprise, but great idea.
I have to agree with everyone that has said that its positioning is rather intrusive, would be best if its moved to the top of the right hand column. Also agree with Guigo's idea for the tracks to change regularly, maybe with a fetured genre each day.

Nah, I prefer the latest mp3's (as it is). If you want the old ones, you can search them out yourself IMO - and some people may have already heard (almost) - all of them. The new ones are the ones that deserve extra attention.

Well ... When a new person to prog first comes to this site the first thing he sees is a bunch of butt average so called prog songs available to download stream , not a good beginning for a new person not a good way to spread the word about how good prog can get. (at least make the songs a collection from the top 250 CDs)

I love this facility. The "random" choice change every day is not a bad idea.
I'd like to comment: Can we limit the entries per band to 1 (one)? That way more bands get exposure. If people want to know more of a band they can always move to the band page.

Great!
imho:
1. Positioning is fine. I'd rather hear the groups music than someone else's opinion of it.
2. Track rotation is the way to go. After a group/artist has a song listed they drop to the end of the list keeping it relatively fresh.
3. I'd remove "Downloads" since we can't really d/l the music.
4. I'm assuming the whole PA library is available? Established major artists (Taal) as well as newcomer's?

I like the idea, I like the positioning.
Personally I would make it take up less vertical space on the page, maybe by only showing 5 songs instead of the 10 we currently see. But as a member I have no problem navagating the site.
And I like the idea of keeping the songs as the newest additions, again as a member I know where to find the rest of them.
I PARTICULARILY LIKE THE 'NEW VISITORS GUIDE'. To me this is a great resource for 'newbies' to the site. It would have been a great help when I first starting visiting a couple of years ago.

Great addendum to this site's already laudative qualities. It's an useful innovation, as one would arrange himself to meet new material and bands without having to waste that much time in search for updates. I, myself, have noted about three or four interesting bands, when I first took a listen at the new feature. In my opinion, its position is just irrelevant - not much impact caused on the new members, unless people are just as frivolous as to take that into account, rather than hearing the songs themselves and probe the site's content -, save for reducing the reviews' area, even though one has the option of reading more than what's initially displayed. In such case, Firepuck's thought could answer to that issue, as well. As for the suggestion of placing in previously existent mp3 streams, I'm not so sure on how significant that'd be, since anyone can just look for what's already there themselves, even with genre-derived tracks, and just for building a rating system of popularity based on the listenings, it doesn't seem that important to take up more space.

I agree with the sentiment that the latest streaming mp3s should be moved by resizing it and putting it on the right. Also, there should be an option of putting it on a random setting that would introduce lots of people to music that's been around for a while, and a "featured" setting that would allow people to listen to the newest streaming additions.

If it's possible to have both options, that would be great. But I'm not sure if it is possible. If not, I would prefer to see the most recent tracks displayed.

The streaming is a good idea but the contents of the page you get when you first arrive on the site is not so good.
We have a tacky "hit this and win an Xbox/iPod" type ad at the top, a block of Google ads down the right and only a small paragraph about the site visible above the MP3 download (which is now an incorrect term) box. It looks better when you can see some album covers in the reviews.

Whilst I am sure that this new facility will be welcomed by others, am I the only one who mourns the demise of the time when we could download the MP3 samples?
I don't have time to sit at my PC and listen to the streaming MP3s.
I used to download and listen at my leisure on my MP3 player.
I can tell you that I discovered and went on to buy the CDs of a good number of new bands this way.
Why was this facility changed?

progadder, when we had the ability to easily download the MP3's I was fortunate enough to have downloaded hundreds of them. I too do not have the time to sit in front of my PC and listen to streaming music.
It use to be quick and easy to download lots of music by saving the song to my hard drive. I didn't have to listen to the song to save it. Of course, this was done in a fraction of the time it would take to record the song as it played.
Perhaps there are those out there who can offer alternate solutions.
Before everyone comes back and says to buy the CD's let me say that my musical purchases prior to coming to this site were non-existent in the previous 10 years (I have a collection of 1000 plus prog LP's collected in the 70's and early 80's and several hundred cassettes taped from friends collections so I had enough music to listen to - OR SO I THOUGHT!!!).
Since coming to this site I am now regularily purchasing new CD's but I have a very small budget for this (married with children). I would listen to the music I downloaded from this site along with reading the reviews to best determine where to spend my money.

The MP3 downloads were indeed withdrawn for copyright reasons.
Please remember that attempting to Rip the audio from the streaming falls under the heading of "illegal activity" and as such should not be discussed here.

note some tracks with non-English characters dont display properly on the player.
For example Marco Antonio Araujo's name displays as "Aramarco Ant" for some reason.
Here his take on Gymnopedie #3 currently on the player in "track 2" position.

this may be because of the file's tags. myself i use an excelent player called foobar, which helps me by getting full album tags from freedb and updating, and also for manually editing the tags.
but also, it may not be a problem with the tags.

The problem can't be fixed - the font which the player uses cannot be altered, and it simply cannot display non-ascii characters. The only way would be to contact the author of the flash-plugin and ask him to replace the font.

It´s nice to see Black Jesters "Mirror song" there, it´s such a good song, always has been my fave by them, it´s really an exceptional song if you´re into prog metal - brilliant guitar work, fantastic harmony solos, nice details in the rhythm play.... it´s a good album anyway, more diverse than the usual neoclassical progmetal.

Latest addition Symph Prog from Switzerland!
"Welcome" are a three piece,
Bernie Krauer/Keyboards, Vocals
Tommy Stebel/Percussion, Guitar, Vocals
Francis Jost/Bass, Vocals
who are obviously in love with Yes. However the keyboard-driven compositions rattle along and make you wonder why Yes have released so much drivel over the last 25 years!
Fans of the Hammond Organ will love this.
