Subject: The race for 1000 (reviews)
Date Posted: October 28 2006 at 12:02
The race for 1000 reviews is hotting up. Hugues is also on track to break the 2000 revews around the same time.

The current state of play is:
  1. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=325 - Sean Trane (1714)
  2. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=4698 - loserboy (846)
  3. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=3684 - erik neuteboom (835)
  4. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=405 - Gatot (810)

So who's you're money on? Will Sean Trane reach 2000 reviews before any of the other three reach 1000? Which of Loserboy (the mysterious James Unger), Erik and Gatot will reach 1000 reviews first? Will they get there before Sean Trane has done 2000?

This is not a popularity contest by the way!
Wink

James doesn't post reviews that often any more. Hughes need to step it up (really, only 1714 reviews ). It looks like it's going to come down to Gatot and Erik. I'll wait to see what happens after they have seen this thread to decide.

Good luck! Wink

can I enter the poll as 500? Tongue

well, easiest assumption is Erik, who writes on a daily basis (and doing that in relatively 200 words per review, it's common sense to say he's the easy worker and the fast typist). I would however want Gatot to "win the challenge". He publishes review less often, but when, he does it very comprehensive and within an entire bulk.

attention however to loserboy; he came once in august with about 50 or 60 reviews. If he does that three more times (and relatively in short time), he's the winner.

as for Hugues...uhm...Wink

someone from behind could luckily be you, Bob (Easy Wink). why not? Tongue

Haha, just noticed this thread, what a nice surprise Bob Thumbs Up

Since early 2004 I write reviews for Prog Archives and I remember vividly that Prog Archives started to publish that 'MacDonald's like' reviewers competition. I had mixed feelings about it: on one hand I don't like that kind of competition, on the other hand it's a nice boost and ego-gratification Approve

Personally I have great respect for Gatot and we know each other, sometimes we have contact via PM or via threads (like Led Zep). Our reviews are totally different: I am more focussed on giving information about lesser known bands with a restriction in the amount of words, Gatot prefers to write more extended reviews about his favorite bands with a wonderful personal touch. And I post more frequently with 2 or 3 reviews and Gatot post less frequently but then 5-6 or even more! And don't underestimate Loserboy because he suddenly appears with an amazingly large post so ... the tension is building Wink

By the way, Sean is manipulating this site by adding lots of mediocre bands like Santana and then posting 10 reviews ... LOL

I think Erik to win this, he's motivated because of this thrread and when Led Zepp is added he'll have them finished shortly I think.

let the race continue and the best reviewer needn't win, for he'll be appreciated anyway.

James ends up posting something like 40 reviews at a time so don't count him out.

Hua ha ha ha haha ..... I just noticed this thread from Erik's PM. Thanks Erik, for letting me know about this funny thread. After that, I got trouble finding the thread until today ...

Oh yeah .. it's a long Muslim Holiday last week and it's gonna be extended until next week. That's why I have written many reviews recently and probably next week. After that ... I cannot guarrantee I can be as productive as last week.

Am actually preparing some Indonesian prog bands like Guruh Gipsy, God Bless, Harry Roesli & His Gank, Wow!, Nerv, Pendulum, In Memoriam, Vantasma, Makara, Anane to be included here in progarchives. I still do some research on finding the most reliable sources as some of them are Vintage bands (Guruh Gipsy, Harry Roesli, God Bless). But don't worry, I will make sure that they are really "prog". Guruh Gipsy is a wonderful prog band. Only one band that probably I would classify as "Prog Related" because they had only one FULL PROG album out of 6 albums they released. But the other albums actually have one or two prog song. Hope that you don't mind for me adding another prog-related band. That's only one band. The rest are PROG to the corner and some of them were released under IPS (Indonesian Progressive Society).

BTW thanks for comments from you all ...

Salam,
Gatot

Erik, even if it was meant more as a joke, my post was a bit mean-spirited, and I regret it. Sorry!Embarrassed

Each of you write fine reviews, and I know that for yourself, Hugues and Gatot, at least, English is not your first language. (Imagine if I tried to write in Dutch, French, or Indonesian!Confused)

I admire and envy the motivation (not to mention the huge collections!Wink) each of you displays with your very long reviews lists.Clap

Still, I feel that this poll, and the way in which reviewers are now ranked by "most prolific" (that is, numbers of reviews), risks sending the signal that PA values quantity over quality. Some who have significantly fewer reviews (which may yet be of above-average quality) may thus feel undervalued, and as if they have no hope of ever catching up with the 'big guys." Intended, no doubt, to motivate people to review, the "most prolific" list can do just the opposite.Stern Smile

That list can also send the wrong message -- especially, I fear, to a younger reviewer: "Just crank out the reviews. Don't worry about editing or writing quality. As with post counts, it is sheer numbers that will secure your "rank" and reputation around here."

Dickens wrote 14 books -- Steven King must have ten times that amount. Therefore, King must be a "better" writer, and McDonald's must make the best food in the world.

But you're a home-made, tasty burger (topped, perhaps, with Edam, for some authentic Dutch flavour), not a plastic, generic, mass-produced Big Mac, right? Big smile

Geek BTW, that's  PROVES!Wink

Peter Rideout: LOL + Thumbs Up = Approve

The first time I noticed the 'most prolific reviewers list' on Prog Archives, I was not happy because it reminded me of the MacDonalds 'best worker of the week list' with the only goal to increase the competion and to produce more in order to gain more money, read 'Das Kapital' by Karl Marx Wink
But I don't feel competition with the others and I don't feel an urge to produce more because I want to spent time on my reviews to write decent reviews and I know the other reviewers have the same attitude. But perhaps Chief mailto:M@X - M@X of the Prog Archives clan has some comments on this issue .. Question

Posted By: Easy Livin
Date Posted: November 07 2006 at 03:32
The poll is just a bit of fun. The guys included in it have already shown themselves to be highly prolific.

The chart on the home page is intended to encourage people to write reviews. Unfortunately, there's no tangible way of measuring quality, otherwise we'd surely have a chart on that basis too.

Remember that the chart is restricted to PRs and SCs, people who have already demonstrated that they take the music seriously, and who write good reviews. I believe the vast majority of our reviewers, and all of PRs/SCs submit the best reviews they can.

We are fortunate that the people included in this poll, who happen to be prolific reviewers, submit some of the highest quality reviews on the site. They dedicate a lot of their time to contributing to the site, and it is right that it is recognised.

The challenge is to come up with ways of recognising those who contribute in other ways (honorary collaborator status was a good one).

You know, I just do not have much to do during my weeknights in lonely dark (in wintertime) Northern Holland (the girlfriend stays in Brussels) and I have this huge library system at my disposal.

http://www.lamediatheque.be/ - http://www.lamediatheque.be/

I do spend some money to rent albums I don't necessarily really want to hear that much, really, but it is for the cause ( mailto:M@x - M@x , now that ProgArchives is a flourishing business... those who have expenses.......... Embarrassed).

Furthermore, I wrote a lot of those early reviews quickly when PA needed some kind of credibility, but I still cringe when I stumble on some ofd those, so my count of reviews should not be that high, really (actually it is even higher than on the front page for some are too short to be counted).

I have been so long not visiting this thread and I keep laughing reading all of your comments.
BTW, how can I win the competition as I have now been stucked with the wonderful DVD by Porcupine Tree "Arriving ..." which I just received from amazon last week? Hmmm ... actually I want to write many reviews but I'm totally nggeblak with this DVD. ...
Anyway I just written two reviews - finally - with MIke Oldfield "Crises" and Popol Vuh / ACe .... Just two reviews .. would not add-up much to win the competition ...

Well, Gatot, today I enjoyed listening to the new 2-CD Revolution Road by Rocket Scientists and last night the 2-DVD Stage by IQ blew me away, so energetic and lots of great renditions of all their classics Clap
By the way, yesterday I made Ajam Pangang, what do you say in Indonesian: "Selamat makan"?

What? You like "tasty" Ayam Panggang? I think you might start reviewing in Bahasa Indonesia. "Selamat makan" is the phrase to let someone enjoy the food before eating. But if you want to say that the food is delicious, you might say "sedap!". (It also applies to music as well - especially with touchy melody).

BTW, I want to know how to order IQ Stage? I tried to find from amazon but no luck. I usually order from amazon because they are excellent. Let me know please ... Ordering direct from IQ? In poundsterling? Nah ... it's too expensive for me ....!!!

Salam,
Gatot

Well, Hugues and Erik broke through the 900 barrier around the same time, and are neck and neck. Gatot has some catching up to do, but he is known for blitzing us with many fine reviews in a short period.

Looks like the target will be reached in a few months time.
  1. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=325 - Sean Trane (1811) (=905½)
  2. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=3684 - erik neuteboom (905)
  3. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=405 - Gatot (862)
  4. http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=4698 - loserboy (846)

I'm trying to go for quality not quantity (except for Rush album reviews where I pour out the love for the band..well most Rush albums). But these guys have quality and quantity. Their reviews are really good. Clap

Nice to notice that this thread comes to life, thanks for the comments Thumbs Up
Early 2004 I started to write reviews for Prog Archives, 3 years later my average is at about one review every day, not bad. Thanks to my friend Hans from Progwalhalla I have the opportunity to borrow lots of new and interesting prog rock (mainly symphonic). It's quite time-consuming but it's such a wonderful and satisfying feeling if you enjoy an album and 1 or 2 days later you can publish your review. It's even better if you get positive response, that's why I put so much energy and time in making reviews because I have a mission without being religious Wink

Buy it now Zappa88. It becomes harder to justify the expense the older you get.
I bought 90% of my collection within the 10 years when I was between 16 and 26 years of age.

Well, Zappa88, it's something that I have build up because in the early Nineties I started to write reviews for Dutch progrock magazines and I have build up a very interesting progrock collection, thanks to the many promo's I received from progrock bands all over the world. A few years ago I decided to stop writing reviews for the largest Dutch progrock magazine iO Pages and to join Progwalhalla because the owner was very glad to welcome an 'experienced progrock reviewer' and I was glad to get the opportunity to review new prog. So in fact we are both very happy with this situation and I am glad that more and more Prog Archives visitors show their interest in Progwalhalla because Hans is a true proghead who does his best to order interesting prog from all over the world instead of only making money from known progrock bands. We share a sincere love for prog and Hans is not focussed on making big money!

By the way, good advise from Firepuck, BUY IT NOW, NOW, NOW Wink

I'm only 18- 19 tomorrow though- and I feel it's perhaps good that I'm getting all the basic essentials for my collection now rather than later in life. This year I'm trying to get all the outstanding CDs I REALLY want- mostly modern/neo prog as my collection had a big gap until December when I got loads of it cheap- as next year I'm in university and expense on music will be cut right down...

Trust me, I'll keep prog in good hands. As a matter of fact, I am trying to get out of the band I am in right now (its kinda metal-ish) and I am already writing my own music. Myspace page has been set-up, just need to start recording some stuff.

Yup, I am frequently amazed at how much knowledge some of our young members have. I did not possess a quarter of it when I was 19. Mind you I did not have an older brother or the Web to help out.

Yes, Internet changed a lot of things. Back in 1993 when i begun to get heavily into prog, we only had prog books and "Muséa" postmail order shop to discover bands.

Calm down, I'll have to write 953 reviews in the next few days... If I write 100 a day, I can catch up in 9.

Otherwise, if I somehow manage to screw this brilliant oportunity I have, I think S.T will reach the 2000.
