I think it would have to be Hughes/Coverdale era
Burn, Made in Europe, CTTB, Stormbringer

Uriah Heep only had (the very good) Firefly and (the weaker) Innocent victim

Not quite. There was also 'Fallen Angel' which is pure AOR and 'Five Miles' which was unreleased at the time- has its moments but is even poppier.

It has to be the Coverdale/Hughes Deep Purple. Far more consistently excellent.

The Coverdale/Hugues era started off very promisingly with "Burn". Unfortunately, "Stormbringer" was a very disappointing album, apart from "Soldier of fortune" which ironically is one of my favourite DP songs.

I never felt Lawton had the right voice for Heep, but "Firefly" was every bit as good as "Burn" in its own way.

Difficult choice, but I think DPs lows were lower.

Deep Purple by a mile, even though both bore me.

Well I actually found Stormbringer to be a grower- I didn't like it at first. It was the first DP album I ever had and typically for me, it was the least typical!

As someone who counts Coverdale as perhaps my fave singer, it has a lot to commend it. And IMO, no DP song of this era plumbs the depths of 'Save It', 'Love Or Nothing' or 'Flyin High' that Heep's albums in question had. And I speak as a diehard fan!!

I love CTTB too!!

I agree salmacis, I also wasn´t  too crazy about Stormbringer a few years back, but it is a real grower.
If you  accept the more bluesy/soul direction that they took at the time you come to realize that there are some great moments on Stormbringer.

Even though it's the weakest era of DP, it's still better than any Uriah Heep to me.

For me any Heep era is better than DP, excluding the Evans/Simper/Blackmore/Lord/Paice which is great, so Heep.

Stormbringer was the coolest album since Machine Head...I loved it oh, so much. Burn was good but Stormbringer rocked!

It's got to be slow
Taking love the only way
It's got to just flow
Making love and taking time to let it grow

^IMO, it didn't. I think the fact it didn't rock is a big problem people have with 'Stormbringer'. It was the first DP album I had and it's the least rocky album in their catalogue- typical I'd have that one first. On repeated listens though, it's a good album. I think the rather flat production didn't help it though- Ian Paice has admitted as much, more or less. And Blackmore puts in a very lacklustre performance, it must be said.

I'm a Uriah heep fan but the day Thain had to leave  the band they started to die and the departure (Kick off would be more accurate) of David Byron was the tombstone.

I don't know- 'Firefly', 'Sea Of Light' and 'Sonic Origami' (give or take a few songs, which are a bit bland but OK) stand up to the best of the Byron era, imo. The other albums range from good to patchy to duff (most of the 80s ones).

While i can understand people who don''t praise much Lawton era, I'm of completely opposite opinion. Of course these (I mean only Innocent Victim and Fallen Angel, because Firefly, IMHO, was as adventurous as any of Byron-era albums) albums have some radio-friendly approach, but the music hasn't lost any brilliance. How can I not love a song like Come Back To Me, Free Me, Choices, Illusion or Love Or Nothing? And this is far from entire Brilliance list.

An about Coverdale-era Deep Purple... of course it has some it's moments... Well, lets say it's good,(Burn, Sail Away, This Time Around and couple of other songs are really great) but I think it's nowhere near Lawton-era Uriah Heep.

So I vote for UH.

...If it was David Byron's era ,I would go for Uriah Heep ...but since it isn't ,well its not that  I like Coverdale on Purple that much but ,I prefer it, Yep and I guess you guys agree with me that since David is gone, Uriah Heep faded out a little bit so...

Yeah.. DP had it's share of great vocalists... I happen to love Rod Evans voice as well. Couldn't see Coverdale,  or Gillan carried off a track like River Deep Mountain High. Though I could see  Hugues doing it. Clap

Lawton was good but not great...and Purple did their funkiest, great Stormbringer. Purple. Coverdale started to annoy me much later.

hello in first place it's difficult to compare both bands in different perido of time:

DP mark III starts in 1974, when UH stellar mark was on, second UH with lawton starts in 1977 when DP no longer are. so i did not understand well the comparisons, when UH with lawton was arriving in late 76 early 77' the musical trends were changing and i think that UH mantain his blend of hard rock until Fallen Angel in 1979 when DP was in that time finished.

just my two cents

Cheers

Actually I can compare these two eras: new beginnings for both bands that had previously lost their most famous vocalists - UH lost David Byron and DP lost Ian Gillan; and both bands went into a more bluesy-er direction during these two eras.

i did this poll for the fun of it Big%20smile, so let the fun continue LOL

I choose Deep Purple over Uriah Heep. DP are one of my favourite rockbands, and they have a more straightforward hardrock sound. While UH are more bombastic and symphonic although I wouldnt describe them as progrock. I think David Coverdale and John Lawton  periods are very underated.
Burn was a loud album. Strormbringer was not as loud although if Led Zeppelin would have made this album it would have been considere heavy. I dont agree with people who say that Fallen Angel is an AOR album it has a real heavy metal feel to it while Innocent Victim sounds less heavy

My third favourite band vs. my second favourite band. But this question is not so hard for me,because of the eras. David Coverdale/Glenn Hughes Deep Purple for me!

I am a big, big fan of those 2 bands, sadly the 2 eras this poll is referring to are don't thrill me at all!

My DP means having Ian Gillan on the mike---My UH means David Byron fronting the stage!

I never listen to Coverdales/Hugues 'DP ..''funky'' DP doesnn't do it for meSmile.BURN still has its moments, but i can't recall last time i played it!

and the only decent Lawton's UH i spin once in a while is FIREFLY which has some very good songs (Hangin tree, rollin on, sympathy and title track) .

The same cannot be said about the following albums INNOCENT VICTIM and FALLEN ANGELS, kind of poppy Uriah Heep ''light''.............the plot was lost by then!! K. Hensley was still in the band but everyone could see the heart and faith wasn't there anymore!

So my answer is Uriah Heep by a wisker, but with no real excitement either!

I thought the Coverdale/Hughes era was quite good as a matter of fact.

I think Heep's Lawton era is similar to Purple's Coverdale/Hughes era.
Songs like "Rollin On" and "Wise Man" could easily have been written by Coverdale or Hughes.
I think that Deep Purple was a bit stronger, though. While "Firefly" is really good, "Burn" is much better!

oooh...Uriah Heep vs. Deep Purple, two bands I love dearly! Still, I choose Deep Purple in the Coverdale era...
