I never see Tool or Nine Inch Nails mentioned around here. I think their music would fall into a loose definition of Progressive Rock.

What do you'all think?

I don't know. The first time I heard Thraak by KK for all I knew it could have been a Nine Inch Nails composition if I didn't know it was Bob and the boys back at it!

I can understand the Tool prog connection. NIN is industrial, there may be flashes of prog, here and there, however, I'd not considered them as a prog band. Actually, all these threads arguing over what is prog and what's not is getting a bit dizzy. I'd like to have Max and the "official" reviewers recieve our candidates for consideration and let them make those assumptions.

You're right! Let's not argue about such an unimportant thing like a definition, but let's talk about the lovely things in life, like, ehm.... for instance...

THE MUSIC!!  (is the best!)

And Beer. We defintely need more beer threads. I'm fond of Guinness (Stout), Dos Equis Amber and Samuel Adams.

What imports should I look for?

Beer is for kids. Show me a bottle of Scotch.

Posted By: Dan Bobrowski

Thanks Jim,

I'll begin the search. Scotch............?  I prefer to pursue my childish passions, beer and prog. It served me well in the seventies and I'm still enthralled.

 BURP!!, 'sxuse me.

I just ate some nuts!  'Cashew-nuts' (if they have the same name in English). Delicious! But if I had to choose between nuts and BEER... !

Posted By: Dan Bobrowski
Date Posted: March 10 2004 at 10:46

Of course there is still the debate: straight from the bottle or tap. Glass or stein. What is "good head," dirty glass, clean glass. So many choices!!!

Is Beer Prog? I mean, except for Vibrationbaby, we're mainly beer drinkers. Those of us old enough, anyway. So, if a proghole drinks beer while listening to prog, is beer prog? Come on, Peter, give us the reviewers view.

Posted By: Joren
Date Posted: March 10 2004 at 11:20

Beer is popular among all sorts of people!

By the way: I prefer beer from a bottle, in most cases, because in some bars they mix the beer in the tap with WATER!

No wonder I'm not jiving with you guys.   I'm a wine guy myself.   Could it be that I have too much Class.   Joke!

Getting back to Tool and NiN. I know many of you will disagree but I think Tool is Progressive Metal. It's much too experimental to be heavy metal and it's not really Industrial ie. KMFDM and Skinny Puppy. The same argument could be made for NIN although I think of them (him) as a crossover, a fusion of Progressive and Industrial.

PS: I charge $5.00 for you to disagree with me

I'm not sure about NIN, but I agree with you about Tool. They fit the Prog description in my mind. But I think prog-metal is a very hazy area.

Wine or whine, Pansy? You probably eat cheese, too. This is a PROG site, not Celine Deon's fan club. Aberation!!!!!!!!

Just kidding, I prefer SAKE, cold.

There's nothing wrong with cheese!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, French cheese! Brie, Camembert, Cantal

I suppose Tauhd Zaļa and Lucas love it to, for they are French.

Posted By: Dan Bobrowski
Date Posted: March 11 2004 at 11:30

I like a nice Brie with mint sauce on some sourdough..........

I just have to pull yer chain.

My daughter is going to France in June for two weeks. We told her to act Canadian.

Nuts - lovely - show me a bowl of pistachios & I'll show you an empty bowl & a burping 40 year old (enduring image, eh?)

Nothing wrong with wine!!!

I appreciate a good bottle myself (1998 St Emilion Mmmmmmmmmmm!!! A good rich bottle of vintage port Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!) - as for cheese, nothing wrong with that either....

Brie (sorry, Tauhd, but we make better brie in Somerset - SW England - than you guys do in France)

Truckle Cheddar (strong & sharp)

White stilton with apricots

Joren - I'm not surprised they water down the beer! You guys are too out of your skulls from spending too long in Amsterdam "coffee" houses!!

Danbo - as far as Scotch is concerned, I hope you're talking decent single malt, not this blended filth!!

Hmm - seems I am beginning to come across as something of an alcoholic - I'm not guys, honest (hic)

On the coffeshops: It seems that people from all around the world think The Netherlands = Amsterdam = drugs paradise. Well, the last part is true, actually , but there's more in Holland than Amsterdam... (there are coffeeshops in other towns too ). No seriously, officially you have to be over eighteen to get this stuff. But I have to admit I've smoked pot a few times. Well, I suppose most of the people here have, don't you?

You know, I was actually tempted yesterday to start a poll on what mind altering substances members of the group may or may not have used/taken in the past (I dare say many of the membership may have had less than 100% legal youthful experiences).

This was to be purely out of curiosity, but then my sensible self switched back on and thought such a poll/thread may have been considered less than responsible & may even have offended some of the membership.

how did a topic about Nine Inch Nails manage to get onto the subject of pot! My view is that: Nine Inch Nails aren't Prog, Vodka beats all other alchohol, Pot is great but not as good as alchohol, peanuts are only any good if there salted.

Re: mind altering substances.

MUSHROOMS are great because they arent dangerous but there still fun (and cheap)

Ah the carefree days of youth, eh?? Just as well we've all left these days behind us, eh?? I mean, it would be irresponsible for people of our age to still be abusing our bodies.

Perish the very thought.
