Hi everybody, am new here and though have used the site for info; this is my first post.
Am digging into prog rock and among the bands am new to is Van Der Graaf Generator.
Have CD "Introduction to" and "H to HE,Who am the Only One"; and really like them a lot.
Anyone could recommend other titles.
Am debating whether to get "Aerosol Grey Machine " or not as reviews at the site are so so.

I happen to be in the middle of a VdGG marathon -- well, a mini-marathon; just a few albums. Your most obvious follow-up would be their H to He... follow-up album, Pawn Hearts (excellent album). Then Godbluff and then Still Life. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=343 - The reviews , at least for me, were a good guide... H to He... happens to be my favourite of theirs (even though it's not the highest rated overall), and Pawn Hearts my close second fave. |

Every VdGG album is recommended.
BTW, there have been recently some threads on VdGG recommendations in the "Recommended albums" section... (the last one is called "Help me now" or smth. like that, others have a name "VdGG" in their titles, you can easily find them by a search...)
Anyway, good luck with VdGG!

I'd recommend The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other and Pawn Hearts before moving on to the other albums. The Aerosol Grey Machine has some good tracks but they hadn't got into their stride yet, and I don't feel the later albums have the same inventiveness as The Least We Can Do, H To He and Pawn Hearts. However, you won't go far wrong if you like a particular track on the Introduction CD and pick the album it comes from!

"Aerosol grey machine" is an album I really like but there is no David Jackson in there. It's an experimental album where vdgg were still trying to get an identity (it was ment to be a solo album by peter hammill). Imo you may find it a bit harder to get into than "h to he" or "the least we can do" but its still an amazing album.
"The least we can do is wave to each other" was released the same year as "H to He" and thus they have many similarities. A good album but I like "H to He" slightly more.
"Pawn Hearts" is really brilliant. Very complex compared to the previous albums. In this cd appear avant-garde and psychedelic elements and it's surely tough to get into. A true masterpiece (as most vdgg albums
 )"Godbluff" is in my opinion the most "easy-listening" album of vdgg. Powerfull and memorable melodies and an amazing performance from PH. Another masterpiece of progressive music.
Those are the albums that in my opinion you should get first. You can even try PH first works which at times sound like Vdgg (you cant really tell the difference
 ). I would rate "aerosol grey machine" as a four star album (excellent addition to any progressive collection") and all the others from 1970 to 1975 as five cause they're true masterpieces. |

For me - everything from "The least we can do ..." to "World record" is a great album and highly recomended. I think "Still life" is the most easy to listen to but you may think else.
About "the aerosol grey machine" - I got it only few days ago so give me a month and I'll answer.
If you decide to try PH's solo albums start with "The silent corner and the empty stage" which is quite close to "H to HE ..." or "Godbluf". ------------- omri |

I went this path: H to He, Pawn Hearts, Godbluff. My next one will most likely be Still Life and then The least we can do. |

No good albums excist. Only good songs (2 or three per album)

That's only true for Pawn Hearts, which only has 3 good songs . For the others, that's not true at all. -------------   |
