Which album do you think is better from these leading modern prog giants?

10,000 Days OR Amputechture

I need to give Amputechture some more listens, but it didn't blow me away with the first impression.  For now the vote has to go to 10,000 days.

These are two albums I've been struggling with this year.  They're both good and I like them, but the more I listen, the more each album sounds like an indication that the bands are simply becoming complacent with their sound.

Obviously both TMV and Tool are capable of great things, but on 10KD and Amputecture, it seems to me that each has made 'just another album by ______".  I wish they would explore their capabilities further rather than just make more albums that sound like their old ones.

Compared to Tool...I feel Volta definitely upped their sound in terms of scope: dynamics in the compositions, atonal jazz sections, sax interplay and counterpoint, vocal registers show tons of range and interesting effects, varied and symmetrical songs (4 lackadaisical or ballady/psychedelic/raga-esque tracks, 2 epics; Tetragrammaton probably being the best song I think they've written, 2 jam based songs with better latin grooves)...whereas Tool have put together an album of Lateralus b-sides with some new attempts at a guitar solo, post-rock vibes, and interesting electronics here and there that pretty much amount to the only saving grace...which isn't much.

Again, Volta.

Volta....I took what...5 years to do a normal album for Tool when Mars Volta did 3 studio album and a live album during that time and they are already on the forth album...

Mars Volta all the way!

Three album, Three different mind setting, Three very good album. Hope the forth will be like that too. something different with the TMV sound...but without Jon Theodore...I just can'T tell!

Nice poll.

I wasn't as impressed with Tool's latest as I was the TMV's. I've only had "Amputechture" a week and have listened to it over twice as much as i've listened to "10,000 Days". Not that the latter is bad, I just consider it Tool's 3rd best album.

The poll was still pretty close though, what edged it is that Tool take too damn long to write stuff.

WOW! This has to be one of the most difficult posts, I have ever encountered. I'm really into both of these albums at this moment, but if I'd have to choose, it would be Amputechture. Mainly because "10.000 days" has those filler-tracks that I skip. (And YES: I know about the synchronization).

I like 10,000 days, but if I compare it to Amputechture then it isn't as good as I though it was.

So Amputechture wins in my book.

"Amputechture" by a mile. I found "10,000 Days" somewhat samey, and in any case not as good as "Lateralus".

Amputechture all the way. ive been a massive mars volta fan for a while, and despite my high expectations, i wasn't the slightest bit dissapointed. brilliant album.

I'm still not completely into tool. I bought lateralus, in an attempt to "get" what everybody is raving about, and yeah, when i listen to it loud enough i do enjoy it... but there's nothing that really jumps out and grabs you. the same goes with 10,000 Days. About half way through the album i find myself getting bored and switch to a different artist. On the contrary, just hearing one song on Amputechture makes me want to listen to the entire album.

Amputechture for me; first listen couldn't stand it, second listen couldn't get enough of it. I rekon TMV have come of age on this album, they've slowed down a little bit, and given their work a more grounded diverse feel to it, in other words less punki and more prog. Definately their best work and hands down one of the best works  so far in the milennium

Amputechture because Tool sucks!

Oh and Mars Volta is pretty entertaining (far more then Tool), although I'm not sure if I will enjoy them at all anymore due to the drummer leaving.

Amputecture, while not the best album in terms of quality, shows a band trying new things and moving in an exciting new direction.

10,000 Days just feels like more of the same.

Nice job making a tough poll. IMO tough polls are generally much more interesting than easy ones, even if the results tend to be too indecisively close. In this case, Amputechture seems to be winning, and it got my vote.
The Tool album is good, but a little uneven. I like it a lot, but Amputechture is more consistently impressive.
Nevertheless, if I were to rate both albums, each would get about a 4.5. Very close, but Amputechture wins by a slight margin.

Amputechture is a much more consistent album where 10, 000 Days tends to lose much momentum and creativity after The Pot. Although I really like Tool I find they have a tendency to include a lot uninspired meanderings towards the end of their albums. Of course the Mars Volta are guilty of this as well, especially on Frances the Mute, but I find that with Amputechture their influences are congealing into something solid and unique. In my opinion Amputechture is an excellent album where 10, 000 Days is simply good.

Absolutely agree with you there. TMV have got more confident, and (a bit) less discordant. I simply can't stop playing the album. 10,000 days is still a fine work, but Amputechture could become a classic.

Weird reason to base your opinion on,especially if you haven't seen the packaging for 10,000 Days, which gets my vote for best packaging of 2006.

The packaging of 10,000 days is great, even though I could do without the politically correct warning about looking through the silly glasses. Unfortunately it's hampered by the size of a CD - would have been something special on a 12" vinyl (sorry showing my age here). I like the TMV cover too, sort of Grant Wood meets Andy Warhol!! But for artwork, its got to be the Tool album.

^^ shouldn't base the mars volta on the one song you've heard on this site. They are very diverse. Especially a song from deloused (which IMO is much less prog than both Frances and Amputechture.)

I voted for Amputechture because I think it's a fantastic album that establishes a lot of haunting moods throughout. Very emotional. 10,000 days is also very good but I am still sticking with the mars volta on this one.

Amputechture has become one of my all time favorite albums within the forst two nonth of its release - something that has never happened to me before. Pefection in music.

10,000 days is pretty good, but it's Tool's most boring album.

I don't see why people think the mars volta sound the same on amputechture as they always have. Their sound is FAR different on amputechture. They added the slower more pink-floyd esque sound much more and added a lot of ambient jazz sections with the saxophone that really didn't exist in their previous albums (with the exception of certain parts of Cassandra Geminni.)

The vocals are also very different this time around. A lot of changes in the register and backing vocals that are very high make it a lot different than any of their other albums vocally.

Just don't understand the "sounds the same" comparisons. I would with Tool and 10,000 days, but not the mars volta.

10,000 Days - Tool's best and my fave CD from this year

Amputechture - TMV's worst, 70 minutes of filler(each song could have been half shorter and hence less boring) and one nice song ("Vermicide")

Gosh, I've just started the same poll.Excuse me

I dunno, they are both pretty meaty albums so I vote both :)

10'000 Days is good enough. Not bad at all. Really good follow-up to Lateralus. Although, 10'000 Days is an album with many FILLERS. Wings For Marie, for example, too much long and boring. Nevertheless, Vicarious is a great track.

Amputechture - best Mars Volta album after De-Loused. I suppose, there IS ONLY ONE FILLER - last track, really boring. First track is some kind of intro with guitar solo - nice. Tetragrammaton is a bit too long, I think it should have been shorter, but the track is good in whole. Viscera Eyes is one of my favs on this album. Day Of The Baphomets - IMPRESSIVE, WONDERFUL track. My favorite Mars Volta song, really. Drum solo in the middle is just great!!!

So, Mars Volta wins.
