There is a lot of different kinds of darkness and expressions on this list. If you have another dark favorite, please write which one. Some of you might miss Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant, ELP, Rush but I just find them too sunny and lighthearted compared to most of these. You're also welcome to disagree on my inclusions.

Which album do you consider 70's prog's dark masterpiece?

Tie between "Ys" and "First Utterance", as far as I'm concerned. I voted for the latter, though, which I found really disturbing - and musically quite wonderful as well.

can you explain what album of Ash Ra Tempel is called "Same"? Wink

the "dark" meaning is pretty much voiled.

and as I am welcome to disagree on your inclusions, thank you for that LOL, I saw Animals' not dark, Pawn Hearts' not darkest of VdGG, A Passion Play isn't dark, 666's not dark, In Camera's not dark enough. Wink

I don't know what to vote. Cry

Well, Univers Zero's Heresie is quite possibly the darkest album I have ever heard, but I don't consider it a masterpiece.

If it has to be dark and a masterpiece, I would say King Crimson's Red. It's a tough call though, there's lots of excellent music on that list.

Dark is very subjective, of course. Some think of prog-metal (or growling) as really dark, while others think of the whole genre as a joke.

I still guess 10-15 of these bands/albums are pretty obvious on a list like this. To me Pawn Hearts and In Camera are very dark. A Passion Play is defenatly JT's darkest imo (not that it says a lot), I could easily have chosen another album from most bands included here.

in the absence of any Art Zoyd record, than Univers Zero's Heresie will win this hands down. I never really thought of Comus as dark in the depressive sense (which is what I believe is meant here)?

Comus was pagan , demons etc... >> spooky but not dark.

No, not depressive. I think of First Utterance are dark, destructive and violent (but still highly entertaining). My girlfriend think its one of my darkest albums. She gets uncomfortable by the album's whole atmosphere.

I think dark can be a lot of things. None of the albums in the poll are depressing to me. (except for Animals, that I don't really like myself)  And defenatly not Heresie. Scary, dark and evil maybe.

Another interesting poll... Another tough choice...

Opinions vary. For instance, I consider Gnidrolog's second album, Lady Lake, to be darker than In Spite of Harry's Toe-nail. Over for me is darker than In Camera and both Still Life and Godbluff are darker than Pawn Hearts.

There are too many candidates in the poll: A Passion Play, Rock Bottom, Red, In Camera...

Still, I'll vote for Godbluff (i.e., "Other").

Holy crap!  I don't know more than half of these albums!  I'll vote for Red anyway, the darkest of those I know in the list.

With Over I can easily understand why, but I actually consider that collection of hopeless love songs to be more depressive, sad and melancholic (which I know can be thought of as dark, too). I was thinking about choosing Silent Corner... instead of In Camera myself.

And I find In Spite... a lot darker than Lady Lake... Strange. But Godbluff could very well have been in the poll.

very well said; with this in mind i'm going to refer to Aphrodite's Child - 666 because, although it's not all dark, when it actually is it surpasses anything else i've heard by a band, be it new or old; listening to it i actually found myself thinking at times "so this is what black metal is trying to make me feel" LOL

i believe the band managed to get to the concept of apocalypse quite well and that this is in fact an album that will make you feel uncomfortable in some parts, more than any other dark prog album

I voted other: King Crimson's "In The Wake of Poseidon"
But my favorite dark album of the seventies is Tim Buckley's "Starsailor". It's pretty proggy, but I don't consider it to be prog.

Island "Pictures" is sadly not on this list, but out of those listed UZ "Heresie" is the darkest. The darkness there is almost psychotic, and it's not winning this poll simply because not enough people listened to it.

Prog doesn't get much darker than Heresie, although in the 80s Shub Niggurath arguably went even further with Les Morts Vont Vite. Art Zoyd were pretty sombre, but I don't think they ever went into quite as dark a place as early UZ.

Henry Cow - Unrest could also have a place on that list.

I've yet to hear Heresie (only heard their debut), so I'm going for First Utterance.  I'd say that album was more scary and uncomfortable though.

VdGG, as much as I like them, are not that dark to my ears and infact, Hammill is pretty much having a laugh on all VdGG albums, even his own.  The exception to that is Over, which I've somehow not yet heard (waiting for the remaster).

I must listen to Ys again sometime, I've only heard it the once.

The first eight minutes of "La Faulx" are frightfully haunting, other than that the album itself sounds like a bad sound check.

It could, maybe I should just replace Animals with it? It would get ten well deserved votes straight away. I sort of forgot how dark that album is.

Geck0. I know that Peter Hammill has humour, but he's lyrics are defenatly very dark and not that funny. I believe Pawn Hearts is a dark view on our existence and Hammill at his least ironic. Young, full of rage and even naive. Of Course/Gog Magog is tounge in cheek (but still dark), but how aboutThe Cometh, the Curse...? A Louse is not a Home, A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Lemmings? For me Over is an exeption because its hopeless and depressing. But I can't define dark for any other than myself.

Bad sound check? Shocked LOL
Listen again. And again. And again...
How can people differ so much as to their impression/understanding of this album? A (dark) masterpiece, that transcends most of prog IMO.

Idunno - aside from Are you ready Eddy I think Tarkus is pretty dark, and it's pretty clear they added that one off the cutting-room floor. (Yes, I think Jeremy Bender is dark in its own ironic, macabre sort of way - it does deal with themes of violence, homosexuality and prejudice).

Of course, if you left in Eddy and cut out Tarkus, you could say it was dark in a whole nother dimension...

Oh yeah!! This is my territory!! [Excitedly jots down the four albums not yet heard.]

I like creative dark music across genres--and sometimes tire of searching for it amongst the "sunny and lighthearted" products. This is a great list for 70's prog. (Although, as someone mentioned, Island: Pictures should be on the list, perhaps in place of 666.)

Heresie is plenty dark, but I've never thought it as dark as people say...maybe I had just built up my hopes too much from the start. IMO, Can's "Aumgn" is a scarier piece of prog, and Ys is more evil.

First Utterance is twisted and deranged album--and very, very good. A tempting choice.

However, if darkness is taken strictly as the absence of light...as in cold, distant space, we are much closer to the territory of Irrlicht and Alpha Centauri--or, perhaps the most desolate of all, Zeit. On the other hand, chosing an ambient album as a dark *prog* masterpiece is not really fair, since bleak sonicscapes is indeed the raison d'etre (pun intended) of dark ambient.

If I were trying to convince someone familiar with Yes, Genesis, and ELP that prog can, in fact, be dark, I suppose I would select Pawn Hearts and the Crimson trilogy Larks Tongues..., Starless..., and Red. Both VdGG and KC could evoke darkness (and madness) through beauty and chaos, both very tastefully.

Animals is not a happy album to say the least, but Floyd is almost too likable, not as musically disturbing as any of the above--but then there is no reason that dark must imply difficult.

In Camera is a pet favorite (with Silent Corner close behind), dark in a sexy, existential sort of way...but neither the darkest nor very much prog.

MDK...now, I never figured out what made that one so dark--but it is one of the most annoying things I've ever heard, and I respect Magma for that!

Ah...I'm still stumped. So much good music, so many colors of darkness. The only clear winner is this poll. Thumbs Up

'666' for me. It's maybe the definitive prog double album to these ears- certainly there's nothing that sounds like this in the slightest. It's thrillingly dark, the production and eerie voices, plus various warped melodies and creepy vocal/keyboard interludes make for a staggeringly bleak listen.

A three-way tie between Comus' First Utterance,  Il Balletto Di Bronzo's YS and Jacula's Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus. Pawn Hearts was the first to leap out at me, but upon closer inspection I noticed these three albums. In the end I voted for Tardo Pede in Magiam Versus, which inexplicably no one else had voted for.

Great choices, BTW.

Like what? Confused Far East Family Band is the only Asian 70's prog band I know. Their atmospheres are often lovely and seductive but not all that dark. Now...if you are referring to frightening music like "The Heat of the Moment" and "Only Time Will Tell", that's the wrong decade, silly! Tongue

Indeed, these descriptionss are mouth watering, except
maybe the references given by Mr Ozric:

"Along with Steve Hillage's 'Green', Tim Blake's 'New Jerusalem' and Mother Gong's 'Fairy Tales', Xitintoday is a MUST HAVE"

--->three albums which are not so mind blowing IMO.

Is this comparison really fair?

at least "Fairy Tales" is mindblowing; 5 stars all the way. "Green" is excellent, but I would not quite put it up there; a solid 4 star album though. "New Jerusalem" would get 3 stars from me.
no idea why you don't like "Fairy Tales", Oliver; Didier Malherbe's performance alone on this album is already worth 5 stars. perhaps the album is not "spacey" enough for you (although I consider it to be VERY spacey; try to lose yourself in these fairy tales, which are so excellently accompanied by the music).
"Xitintoday" is definitely up your alley though; completely spaced out

It's a tough list, even through the ones I already know... I don't have Ash Ra's debut (apart from a short sample DL'ed from their site, which doesn't tell anything at all), also most of the Canterbury-RIO + some of the Italian albums in the list...

I don't think Pierrot Lunaire album would qualify as "dark" anyway... It sounds more of a "weird" to me! (not in the negative senseWink)

If Animals is dark, I wonder what you'd call Saucerful of Secrets or Ummaguma (I know, they are actually '60's albums!Wink) even The Wall sounds darker to me!

Nice one (though I'm not sure which version I have.... I have it in mp3, probably ripped from the newer CD version, but the sound is so '70's.... anway)

Speaking of which, reminds me of Brainticket's Clestial Ocean, which deals more or less with the same subject. Pretty dark too... I think that should also have been in the list...

oh please... even children may understand that "same" comes to mean "self-titled" (possibly debut) album! of course, he shouldn't have written that way... Besides, you seem to have missed Faust: it's also "same"!!!Tongue

I don't know what to vote. Cry

I shall agree here, indeed, with the exception to note that 666 and In Camera are really dark: listen to "Capture of the Beast" and the surrounding titles in 666, and "Gog Magog" in In Camera! what more do you find dark?!?!?
Also, you may be right about Pawn Hearts' "undarkness" only in terms of lyrics... Musically, I don't recall any darker VdGG album, really.

I don't know what to vote, eitherTongue

Quote I'll go along with Friede and vote for "Xitintoday". very dark album; you can't go any darker than a trip to the ancient Egyptian underworld. highly recommended album, but unfortunately only available on vinyl and a real rarity.

Nice one (though I'm not sure which version I have.... I have it in mp3, probably ripped from the newer CD version, but the sound is so '70's.... anway)

So is _Xitintoday_ currently available on CD or not?! If so, I must have it!!!

BTW, Brainticket's Celestial Ocean...good one.

the answer is here:
http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1744 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=1744
"Their only album was recorded inside the great pyramid and deals with ancient Egyptian mythology. It is rather meditative with the flute of Nik Turner being predominant; lots of synthesizers and spacey guitar and vocoder. The album gets rockier towards the end, but don't expect any crashing guitars like HAWKWIND. For any fan of the psychedelic branch of prog this is an absolute must album.

Unfortunately it does only exist in a vinyl version; a 1994 CD-issue of Nik Turner of the same name includes the same lyrics, but completely different music! Not a bad album, but fades in comparison to the vinyl."
my concern was that since I had it on a Russian mp3 CD, I wasn't sure which version I really had... Russians are known to have converted vinyl-only albums to mp3 as well; I have a copy of No Earthly Connection (actually even two different copies: Music Reincarnate in a single piece in one, broken down in the other!!!) btw, another partly dark album ehWink?
What doubts me most is that the music in my mp3 CD is exactly as described above! btw, I'll be happy if someone informs me of what exactly do I have Confused... I can give the track durations and more detailed info if needed... (besides, what Russians put inside the CD as the album cover is completely different than that featured in PA... it has a picture of Sphynx with some UFO's flying around...)

Gentle Giant's "Aquiring The Taste" is very, very dark in my opinion.

And King Crimson's "Red" either.

Thanx, Jeanine! unfortunately I don't have any copies of the CD at this workplace Ouch (I loaded it on computer in my previous work, damn itAngry!) I still haven't loaded it in my mp3 player, either... I don't think it will be worth the try if it's the new version, ehTongue?

This is my exact track duration listing, with less-than-minor, 1 second variations in 3 tracks. I am surprised how Russians (or whoever the hell it was who converted the vinyl into mp3...) did such a precise job.Confused

(I was pretty sure of the '70's sounds anyway... besides, the music is just as described in band info, and the track tags are credited to 1978)

btw, I was wrong about the cover. I confused it with Anubian Lights' 2nd album, which is also in my disc. It is still different than the one featured in PA discography anyway... hard to describe, but basicly it's a graphic of "Sphynx" words in various sizes, forming a shape of scorpion...

Thanks again, Jeanine... Is the CD version track durations much different?

you can easily tell the CD-version from the vinyl version. if you hear sounds that seem to be knocks on a wall at the beginning of the first three tracks, you have the vinyl version. these are knocks on the walls of the Great Pyramid (from within; the album was recorded inside the Great Pyramid)

Yes, its dark. Another dark and creepy krautaband/album is http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=9918 - German Oak . Highly reccomended. Read the tho reviwevs and you'll get the idea.

All this talk about the Xitintoday album I haven't heard, makes me very curious.

unfortunately I don't have the "other" version anyway Cry... strangely enough; my computer's soundcard is broken down here (at work) and though I loaded the CD here, I'll have to wait 'till I get home to check out your instruction Big smile... Durations match, anyway...

and I'll have to wait 'till another spring to get the CD version, if ever Confused

those who are curious of the mp3'ed vinyl version; you'll have to track it down in Russia (a CD called "Space Rock", printed by a group which call their CD's "domashniaya kollektsiya" - "home collection"...) or, more easily, when you drop in at Istanbul; I'll give you a copy for free Big smile

when it boils down to that, no album is darker than "Phallus Dei" by Amon Düül 2. the song "Dem Guten, Schönen, Wahren" ("For the Good, the True, the Beautiful") is about a child rapist and murderer. here the German lyrics and their translation:

"Ihr ließet die Kindlein zu mir kommen!
In weißen Kleidern mit Blumen im Haar
hab' ich ihnen die Unschuld genommen,
kann euch nicht sagen, wie schön es war!!

"You let the children come to me!
In white clothes, with flowers in the hair,
I took away their virginity!
Can't tell you how wonderful it was!"

Dienet dem Schönen, dem Guten, dem Wahren!
Peitschet ihn aus, er bebt schon danach!
Lasst ihn die süße Qual erfahren;
er sehnt sich so nach Schande und Schmach!
Ja!

Serve the Beautiful, the Good, the True!
Whip him, he is already quivering for it!
Let him experience the sweet torment;
he so craves for disgrace and ignominy.
Yes!

Wir tanzten zusammen Ringelreih'n
und sangen ein wunderschönes Lied.
Die Kleinste fing an, nach der Mutter zu schrei'n.
Ich durchbohrte sie sanft mit meinem Glied.

We danced ring-around-the rosy together
and sang a beautiful song.
The smallest started crying for her mother.
I gently penetrated her with my member.

Kommet zuhauf und seht ihn euch an!
Das Haupt kahlgeschoren und lächelt noch!
Frisch ans Werk, 's ist gleich getan.
Hängt ihn auf, den geilen Moloch!
Ja!

Get thee all here and behold him!
His head shaved bald and still he smiles!
Let's get to work, 'tis easily done!
Hang him, the lusty moloch!
Yes!

Now that's what I call "dark".

your posts evoke several feelings:

- I would've thanked for the lyrics; for I love that album and wanted to sing; but as I learn the meaning beneath them; I'm not so sure of that anymore Wink (actually I already knew what "Phallus Dei" actually means... but I never thought they would take it this far!)

- I speak a little German, and I wanted to improve it; but after this I'm not sure of that, either! after all, I listen to the songs without paying attention to their meanings, and enjoy them; but when I sense their contrast to my beliefs, I can't enjoy them at all!!! The same happened when I discovered what it was about VdGG's White Hammer Wink... what can I do, I'm a conservative christian! ("conservative" in this sense doesn't mean "catholic" or "traditionalist"... I'm neither!)

all in all, you're doing a good job here! keep on!

Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra is not on the list but i think its one of the darkest albums i ever heard, the atmosphere is not dark like in  Universe Zero or like VDG but its very emotional and mellincolic, also Pulsar's Strands Of The Future is very dark and mystic.
