Thanks, I've already checked this out. I can record a pretty pro-sounding record for FAR less than $50,000.

Why would I then give away what I worked so hard on for free, for the promise of a 3-way split on some advertising revenue on a web page that essentially doesn't offer anything different from MySpace (as far as I can see, at least)? Plus, MySpace already has a HUGE existing userbase.

I'm not really planning to make music my full-time occupation. But if I would change my mind, I'd do it something like this:

I have friends who have offered me studio time to record a proffessional-sounding album for a very low fee. People would be albe to download decent quality mp3 versions (192 kbps) of the recordings from an official website, or order the album directly from me. Album art would be handled by me and a friend (painting is another talent of mine). Small-scale printing would be pretty easy: As the recording process would cost me almost nothing I could use the money saved to buy CDs, and equipment to print artwork onto them. No record companies or distributors in between, resulting in a substantially lower price. I would handle promotion through online communities such as MySpace and this forum. I wouldn't mind people spreading my music through illegal download sites/systems. It's great promotion.

I wouldn't be opting for world fame, so this method would probably be sufficient.

In short, I would never need to use that site or any one like it. It might be useful for some, but it seems a little risky anyways. I never trust websites to 100% (a healthy policy), especially not those who offer to help one earn money/fame. You never know. It might be a trap, or the company might go bust or something, which would lead to your investments being lost. $50 000 is a lot of money, and I wouldn't take any chances.

I see one tiny flaw in this plan "All you need is 5,000 people who believe in you."
