Subject: Best starting point for some new band

There are many topics when people want to check some new (for them) band/artist and ask to recommend best albums to start with.
What is, in your opinion, the best starting point for getting into some band's works?
Personally, I prefer live DVDs or at least live CDs. Then, if it impressed me, I check studio works.

Me too, I want something good to start with so I don't hate the band before I've explored them fully.

I usually start with a studio album that I've heard is good, but a
"best of" compilation can also be a good starting point, if it's really
"the best of" and not "the greatest hits".

As far as I'm concerned, it actually depends... It may be what is widely considered as the band's best album, or a "best of" compilation, or in some instances a live album. Personally, I think a "best of" can give a good overview of a band or artist's output, even though there are cases in which these albums don't really include their best work.

I can say only how it works on me. Mostly I was impressed by compilation (of some sorts); a live album also may be viewed as a kind of compilation. That's was my beginning point of Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill investigation (actually, my favourite artists). However, there are other bands/atrists, for whom I began an acquaintance with from entire albums (mostly the (considered) best, but sometimes from the debut ones), and it also worked. So, it really depends...

how can you think of an album as the best if you don't know anything about the band?

Generally I will read the reviews on PA and decide from them which album sounds like the best to get, I dont buy compilation discs anymore as they tend not to include the bands best work and I have only once started with a band from a live album.

I usualy go with what's considered the artist/band's best, but that in itself can create problems.... Now, for example, I am afraid to continue with Queensryche for the fear I'll start to dislike them.....

I have a weird thing for going for a band's SECOND best album...that way if it's bad, its totally bad, but if its mostly good w/ some bad, then there's reason enough tolike them. Did it with KC's Red and it blew me away!

Best of compilations give (if the compilation is any good at least) a wide sense of the bands work, but all too often the compilation isn't really good, so you have to be carefull with that.

Going for the SECOND album (chronologically-wise) is a good thing. Check it yourself on your favourite bands if you don't trust me!

It works often, but not every time. For example, LZ and PF second albums are far from being my favourites.
