So I was thinking...
Everyone knows of the 70s "Big 6" (KC, Floyd, Tull, Genesis, Yes, ELP)...but that prog era has long since past.
I was wondering which bands currently hold the prog reins for the New Big 6. Which bands are sucessful enough commerically to be considered "Big", and innovative enough to be considered something new and large? Which modern bands are the New Big 6?
Now, I know of four that shouldn't be denied a title in this little competition:
-Porcupine Tree
-The Mars Volta
-Radiohead
-Tool
But that leaves two other spots open (unless there is only a Big 4 this era???). Which bands do you guys/girls think carry the prog title well enough while being commercailly large enough to be considered big and innovative enough to "belong" to this era?
Which bands do you think qualify to be the New Big 6?

Cool topic.
Those four are on my list, and I'll add Opeth.
6th: Probably Sigur Ros, or GSYBE

Innovative basically excludes DT, Neo-Prog and Retro Symph bands.
The 4 on your list are original enough and also extremely popular to make the list, Opeth, as suggested above, is another neccessity. Riverside is also immensely popular, as I notice, so their inclusion would make sense too.
I would mention Kayo Dot myself, but their commercial success is close to non-existent, so that excludes them according to your definition as well.

Yeah, I don't really care how popular certain prog bands are, because
stuff like Tool, TMV and Radiohead don't deserve all the ass-kissing
they get. If I was going to make a list of new bands that I thought
were actually important to the prog scene or something, though, it'd probably include more bands on par with:
-Dream Theater
-Opeth
-Porcupine Tree
-Pain of Salvation
And maybe some Sigur Ros, GYBE, Explosions in the Sky, etc.

Although I'm not a fan of DT, they probably deserve a spot.
So my new list would be:
-Porcupine Tree -The Mars Volta -Radiohead -Tool
-DT
Opeth
Honorable mentions:
-Sigur Ros
-GSYBE
-Riverside

Well, I think that no one has mentioned Anglagard, Anekdoten, Far Corner, Zaar, and I think they have to be there.... I think it's because I see a lot of Prog Metal bands (almost all), and that's it's not the only new prog put there. Obviusly Metal is one of the new prog genres (despite I don't like it), but there are more genres out there. And I think that RIO is a genre that is still growing up and maybe is one of the most innovative out there. But It's just my opinion . Just try listening those!!

Well, prog bands don't often get commerical success these days. So fitting the criteria it ould be something like this:
The Mars Volta, Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree (Coheed is a pending inclusion, because there's controversy over their status)
I don't necessarily agree that they should be the "Big 6," but they are the obvious choices for innovation and success. I also personally think prog music has expanded so much since the 70s, that there can't be a 6 band limit for this "Big" group.

The Mars Volta
Porcupine Tree
The Flower Kings
I'd like to give Radiohead a spot, but I don't feel that they are as progressive as the above.

I agree, to an extent. I dont think its at all possible to have a true big 6 like there was in the 70's as most prog bands arevirtuall unknowns, in some cases even amongst progheads. Add to that that its considerably harder to be a truly inovative prog band these days.

Including bands like Porcupine Tree, Radiohead or Muse saying they are innovate it's an insult to prog. Those bands are mainly commercial and poppy with a few prog or proggy songs.
My 6 would be:
- Dream Theater (undoubtedly THE BIG ONE who resurrects prog in 90's -althought you like it or not-)
-Pain Of Salvation (who can doubt the credit that deserve this band?)
-Opeth (the same as Pain Of Salvation)
-----(These bans are, for sure, the three more important)-----Then we could include:
-Riverside
-Tool
-The Mars Volta
*Marillion its a very important band too, but I don't see them like modern prog, but like classical (or a bridge between them).

There is no need to insult Porcupine Tee's proggyness. PT have obvliously influenced quite a few prog bands: Riverside for one. And Opeth would'nt be the Opeth they are w/ out steve. Many members of PA who have a band often say they were inspired by PT also. Everything from PT's earlyier career is pure prog, and they're newer stuff takes prog combines it w/ metal, pop, and space rock. PT have earned their spot in the top six.
I don't see anyone who said Muse yet, but Raidhead has influenced quite a few prog bands even if they are not full blown prog.

Early Rush's progressive output was very metal inspired, and many say their 70's heavy metal influences, combined with their progressive likings and tendancies, produced three very good early prog-metal albums (Fly By Night, Caress Of Steel and 2112)... of course, that's all IMO.
Anyways, I'd have to agree that four of the Modern Big 6 would have to include the following:
Dream Theater
The Flower Kings
Spock's Beard
Porcupine Tree
Tool and The Mars Volta would be good candidates to fill out the group, but I do agree with others that the two biggest Neo Progressive bands from the 80's, Marillion and IQ, also deserve spots in the Top Modern Prog bands. Adding them, that makes it 8, so you might as well round it up to 10 and throw in two more bands. Like who, though? I'd throw in Transatlantic. Yeah, I know that it's made up of members from four of the other bands in the top list already, but together, they were really a unique group whose individual's contributions made the band sounds greater than the sum of it's parts. As for spot 10? I'd probably have to give it to one of the other major prog-metal groups, either Pain Of Salvation or Opeth. I haven't given either of them much listening yet, as I only have on album from each band, but from what I recall of them, they both sound really good.

Well, maybe Fly By Night isn't quite prog-metal, maybe proto-prog-metal? Either way, with songs like "By-Tor & The Snowdog" and "Anthem", they were certainly on their way to making bigger and better pieces. The following two albums were really prog-metal, though, IMO.

Marillion (They started Neo and are still going strong)
Dream Theater (idem, but with prog metal)
Porcupine Tree
The Mars Volta (don't like them much though)
Riverside (make a perfect blend of metal, neo and space)
Pain of Salvation
And that's six.

someone did put Muse in their six but it wasn't me
Personally I don't think either Radiohead or Muse should be in there because they are not fully committed to the genre. Both are prog related. However to describe them as 'poppy' is off the mark(although both have done some commercial stuff) and in the case of Porcupine Tree totally raving bananas

I absolutely agree with mccrank_yeahrig!
i.e.
I've been listening to prog (especially symphonic prog) since 1975, but I couldn't care less about prog metal.
Earlier this year, however, I discovered the Tangent, Wobbler and Anekdoten - and I was BLOWN AWAY!
The Mars Volta, of course, aren't bad either.
Plus, there's Kenso and Shinsekai, from Japan: first-rate symphonic bands, with a strong Canterbury influence.
(I don't dislike the Flower Kings or Spock's Beard, but their lead singers invariable get on my nerves...)

I thought that 'honour' belonged to Rush! |
Neil Peart always wanted to be Rush's drummer, so in 1973 he built a time machine (everybody knows he's the brainy one in Rush) and went into the early 90s to find out what future trends would be. He found himself at a DT concert and took copious notes: "combine shrill vocals, heavy riffs, a few synth flourishes, obscure sci fi concepts - and hey, get a load of that drumkit! must get twin bass drums as soon as possible - and aim for a Yes/heavy metal hybrid. The kids will love it"
Returning to 1970s Canada he met up with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, showed them the lyrics to By Tor and the Snow Dog and explained the basic concept of 2112 and said that if they got rid of John Rutsey they could all be rich. Lee and Lifeson agreed, and basing their 1970s outpust on ideas that Dream Theater would originally have the following decade they cleaned up with albums like 2112, A Farewell To Kings and Moving Pictures.
Unfortunately for the sinister Canadian trio, Peart (who'd disguised himself as a janitor) had been witnessed using his time machine by four young people and a dog with an amusing speech impediment who travelled around in a psychedelic VW camper van, but they'd have got away with it if it wasn't for those darned kids!

IMHO,Anglagard is a New Symphonic band - maybe, the most talented of all New Symph bands, but not more innovative than PT or TMV
DREAM THEATER INNOVATIVE?Ha-ha-ha!!!
Sorry,I love these guys, but to call them innovative...Same goes to MARILLION - I bloody adore them,but...they're NOT innovative, unique or revolutionary sounding
IMHO,surely
Modern Prog's Big 6 for me:
TOOL
PORCUPINE TREE
OPETH
THE MARS VOLTA
GYBE
PAATOS (has anyone mentioned them?)
ANEKDOTEN is close too,but they're TOO influenced by KC.RIVERSIDE is a Modern-Prog clones - they're sounding exactly like mix of all these bands, mainly OPETH,TOOL and PORCUPINE TREE,with touch of neo-prog.
Also I don't consider RADIOHEAD or MUSE to be prog at all

Invented prog-metal? Some bands sometime in the 80's started playing the way prog sounded when it was hard n' heavy in the 70's. And did it in all their songs, all the time. That's not an invention, or innovative.

look. I think people are getting caught up witht his Innovation/Invention thing...
We aren't looking for the 'best' mondern bands. We're looking for the biggest and most important.
Look at the"Big 5" classic prog bands...
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
Genesis
Yes
King Crimson
Expecially JT and PF. I love those bands imensely, but its not like they did anything more innovative than DT. But no one questions their placement in that catagory.
Dream Theater, love 'em, hate 'em..it doesnt matter. They are extremly important to modern prog. They made the genre of Prog Metal what it is today, and brought many new fans ans bands into the Progressive world (myself included...)
I think it would be foolish not to include them.

Of the modern prog genres, New Prog, Prog Metal, and Post Rock are pretty well known. Neo-prog isn't really well-known, but the Flower Kings deserve a spot on the Big 6.

not to be a ball buster, but the way you phrased that, it sounded like you were calling The Flower Kings a Neo-Prog band...
They really aren't. They are listed here under Symphonic Prog, and I think that is quite fitting.
But it doesn't really matter.

It's nice seeing bands like "Mr. Bungle" mentioned but aren't we forgetting that Mr. Bungle is no longer a band...?
Let's make sure the entries exist =)
The msot solid artists I've gotte nso far are:
Porcupine Tree, Opeth, The mars Volta, Dream Theater, Tool, Pain of Salvation, and some neo-prog...
Also let's keep in mind that my idea of modern is bands that began at the earliest in the late 80s but are still around today creating innovative, progressive music.
------------- I'm a reasonable man, get off my case

I definitely agree with your list
but Fates Warning and Queensryche were before Watchtower, so how can Watchtower have invented prog-metal before them?
and also, Queensryche's Warning and Rage for order and Fates Warning early albums are not just traditional, prog is there
