Progressive metal can include all metal genres... from Riverside and Pain of Salvation to Opeth
Progressive Death is about only prog DEATH METAL e.g. Death (the band), Pestilence (probably), Atheist (while the last two are quite close to thrash also)
Technical Death Metal sounds equal to Prog Death as a term

hope you got an idea...

Tech Death = Atheist, Cynic, Death, Pestilence...
Prog Death = Opeth and the like...
Prog Metal = Symphony X, Dream Theater, etc...

That's how I see it...

Progressive Metal is any Metal with major Prog traits or tendencies.

Progressive Death Metal is Death Metal with major Prog traits or tendencies.

Technical Death Metal is Death Metal written and performed with astounding technique, DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PROGRESSIVE.

In short,
Technical DM may or may not be progressive, as you can play non-progressive Death Metal with great technique.
Progressive DM may and may not be technical, although it usually is.

Progressive Metal combines all Metal genres with progginess, Progressive DM included.

Hope that helps.

About a year ago, I'd only ever listened to two or three tech death bands (among them Cryptopsy). Just recently I decided to give a load more a listen, and I'm amazed at how similar they really do sound. I don't think I'm going to listen any further somehow...

thanks people!! ok its clear now.

from what i have heard thus far:

i like Atheist, Cynic, Opeth, Meshuggah

but i don't like Dream Theater

so tech death and prog death are fine by me............

Thing is, all four bands you mentioned are no less deserving of the title 'Prog Metal' than any other band, Dream Theater included. Prog Metal is a vast genre, there is always someone each listener might like.
