What is your favourite review that you wrote. Mine is Heavy Horses . I very much enjoy reading reviews and some of them have changed my attitudes towards certain bands which I previosly did not care for.

Nice topic, i too love reading reviews , about my reviews, i like them a lot, maybe some of them could be with a very personal touch, with emotion , or track by track trying to give a more enphazized (sp?) view of the album.... i dont know...
And actually i dont have a favorite of mine, maybe i should read them again ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

Sadly, my english is very poor. I like to express myself with care and an appropiate language, but I can only do this in spanish. That's the reason why I wrote not to much reviews in the site. :(

I have written several I'm rather proud of, and have often been complimented on them (how conceited I am this evening... ). As to my favourite... off the top of my head, I can say the one I wrote for KC's "Discipline" was particularly good IMHO, as were the ones for "Thick As a Brick" and "Selling England by the Pound". I tend to write relatively long reviews, but not so long that people get tired of reading halfway through.

Mine is really a combination of bio and review.
I'm particulary proud of the tandem done for Aphrodite's Child and 666:

On the other hand I'm embarrased of my first reviews, most of them about my favorite band Genesis, when I have a bit of time will ask the Adms to delete them and writem again.

Well, most of my reviews are terrible - especially the early ones, I really need to re-write those. I wrote most of them in a hurry without thinking too much - and boy does it show! ![LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)
There's one review of mine that turned out alright though (in my standards, I'll never be on the same level as the best writers here), the one I wrote about Umphrey's McGee's latest effort.

In my case it is not that hard to choose since I only wrote 4 reviews. the one that I think was made properly was KC's "Lizard". I read it again few days ago and was impressed of the English I used. By the way maybe this is the place to ask Why my reviews is named of the e-mail adress and not my user name ?
However Rafaela, being a lady will naturaly bring you many compliments since you are so few here. I hope you remember my compliments for the review on "Turn of the cards" which was realy excellent so that does'nt mean you get something you do not deserve but it is easier to us (stupid men) to compliment women than other men.

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=2153 - Tony R (Tony Riviere) [Admin Forum Admin & Moderator] Posted 8:18:30 PM EST, 7/5/2005
![2 stars](https://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_images/2stars.gif) I really love this album, from the ham-fisted keyboards to the twee vocals and from every over-blown piece of orchestration right up to the masterpiece of mirth that is Pirates. Long years in the making, due to ego clashes and arguments about makeup,Elton John being part of the recording process then not and finally producer Pete Waterman being replaced by Little Jimmy Osmond, the band finally got this meisterwerk out into the public consciousness.Once out there it was a smash, spending 16 weeks at Number One in Albania and going Quadruple Platinum in Belize. When one listens to Emerson's Piano Concertos one is immediately reminded of Les Dawson's egregious masterpieces of the early 70's.I can think of no higher praise than that. I find that "The Enemy God Dances With The Black Spirits" fills me with nostalgia,or should that be neuralgia? I'm not sure but I know that Mrs Palmer should have decided against combining that shiny red kit for young Carl's 6th Birthday with a gift of boxing gloves.Pirates- what can I say?I nearly walked the plank the first time I heard this 13 minute epic.It sounds like the ungodly product of a demonic union between WS Gilbert and The Village People and is breath-taking in its excrutiating awfulness and willfull over-ambition.There is nothing like a great Prog Rock Album and this is nothing like a great Prog Rock Album! |
I actually happen to think that's a masterpiece of a review, Tony! I laughed my mellotrons off when I first read it a year or so ago, before I even registered this account.

Yes Raffaella I use it to correct gramatical mistakes (Very common in my case ![Ouch](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif) ), but I don't like to change 100% of a review and some of this are so bad that I would love to make justice to my beloved Genesis.
I once wrote a thesis and was not happy with part of it so instead of redoing parts, I deleted everything from the floppy disks (On those days few people had harddisks here) and did it again, had to ask new permission because a dely was not possible.

Choosing the best of my positive reviews is almost impossible; on the other hand, I find those negative reviews OK:
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (AND THE MAGIC BAND) — Trout Mask ReplicaReview by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=636 - greenback SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Neo-Prog Specialist
This album is definitely VERY overrated! The songs are AWFUL! Many say it is very hard to acquire, but I wonder WHAT can be acquired? And if there was nothing to acquire? Indeed, where is the music here? Where is the melody, the structure, the finesse, the elaborated rhythm, the catchy character, the addictive parts? The Captain has a very bad voice, as being very negligent and nonchalant. Apparently, the music is absolutely not improvised; well, it is hard to believe! The guitar notes are dissonant, and it is so irrelevant and incoherent that it seems young kids of 6-7 years old play with their Fisher Price guitars in the basement! The tracks contain NO keyboards! The strongest point are the EXCELLENT elaborated drums, but unfortunately, the retarded electric guitars sounds and Vliet's irritating vocals kill everything that could be good on this record. The sound of the electric guitars is very gross, unrefined and primitive! Vliet is good and very funny with Frank Zappa, like on the "Bongo fury" album, but here he is pitifully insipid. Nevertheless, I've been able to find some rare better structured rhythmic parts, like on "Pachuco Cadaver" and on "Sugar' N Spikes". The bass, despite quite present, does not seem to make a definite catchy rhythm. The album has a strong experimental dissonant blues influence. 28 redundant tracks all sounding the same? That's TOO much! There are numerous pseudo humorous narrations a la EMINEM: this is not encouraging. Some crazy free sax parts contribute to give a CACOPHONIC character to this album! Frank Zappa speaks on "The Blimp". As improvised-like dissonant albums, I strongly prefer Pat Metheny - Song X, a complex free jazz album: at least, the album is technically outstanding and there is much more structure in the music! The best I can give is 1 well deserved star for the DRUMS here!
RADIOHEAD — Ok ComputerReview by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=636 - greenback SPECIAL COLLABORATOR Neo-Prog Specialist
This album should obtain only an award: for the most overrated album ever! Actually, I think there is a paranormal Energy which tends to give TONS of people an overall rushing zeal to promote and justify the worship of this record!
I don't see any progressive rock element in this record: it rather has a bad psychedelic alternative rock style. The electric guitars may make you believe that King Crimson has been amateurishly & badly aped: it is ABSOLUTELY clear that the guitarists do not know how to play! The electric guitars have one of the most irritating "ANTI-fine-tuned" garage sound! The melody and harmony are completely absent in most of the tracks! Thom Yorke tries to sing like Bono of U2, but he is much worse! The singer is NOT able to sing: he endlessly moans all the time; he really sounds dissonant: his voice does't follow the music: that's extremely annoying! Eternal complaints in an insignificant music. ARGH!
The tracks are depressing and the music often goes nowhere! The overall sound is completely ANTI crystal clear, so this weak point is very irritating! Being the author of this record, I would feel very ashamed of having produced such a twisted music, making money by inducing negative and desperate feelings, thus feeding the dark and unconsciously wanted state of the mind of socially weak people: the tracks express something coming from your dark, depressed and marginal side inside of you! I absolutely experience NO valuable and memorable emotion while listening to this record. I think it is a music for people who like to live forever with messy desperate humors, like the untidiness in an apartment of a bunch of marginal, unemployed pot smokers, who completely have no sense of structure and elegance! Please, grow up, do not waste your time listening to things that won't help you to get a normal and happy life! Stay away from this catalyzer of nonchalance, disorder and negligence!
Nevertheless, I have been able to "find" a few positive points for this record: the rare tracks which have more a small ersatz of melody and catchiness are "Karma Police" and "Let down": they have more decent acoustic guitars and vocals. The track "No surprise" actually has a surprise: some good percussions, which may make you forget the unwanted rhythmic guitar! "Subterranean Homesick Alien" has a decent keyboards ambience.
The good point is that it is slightly more bearable than Captain Beefheart's "Trout mask replica"!

I enjoyed writing my reviews, but I don't think it is up to me to pick a favorite. I am usually my harshest critic anyway.
When I used to do abstract paintings, people would ask me what they were supposed to be. I would tell them that I knew what I had in mind, but it was up to them to decide what they got out of it.
Recently I have had some good responses, especially from a couple of our friends here (you know who you are ). My favorite was from a friend of mine, who looked them up. He said that my reviews of "Foxtrot," and Peter Gabriel's third album, made him want to go right out and buy them.

Well, I recall someone actually copied it some time ago, replaced ELP with Rush, and that one got deleted... It's excellent from where I'm standing though.
BTW: my own favourite review (out of 3) is for Blackmore's Night - Past times with good company. My first. It will be topped by another one shortly...

I've never managed to write a review myself. I had a plan to start with my own top ten sometime ago, so I started with Pawn Hearts. It never got finished. I remember when I decided to look for ispiration here, these two reviews impressed me:
Van Der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts
Review by
lewisoutrider
It's albums like this that finally weened me off Spider-man comics and
soccer star trading cards. The gatefold cover alone puts it in my top
three of all time and the lyrical content is a truly religious
experience. I only hope that new listeners can hear why we are all
giving it five stars. No matter how innovative contempary prog bands
are, I don't see another "Pawn Hearts" on the horizon. Review by
simondippie
Possibly the ultimate prog / art rock album. Very dark, but extremely
intelligent, lyrics. The studio recording quality of this album makes
it hard to believe that it hails from 1971. Superb musicianship
throughout makes this album an essential listen for any serious prog
fan. (Warning - this album was the main reason my wife left me!)

is a 5 star essential masterpiece of prog.. and any who don't rate it

Yeah...and bin what i don't like........it's all relevant.....I don't see the need for the Spanish inquisition......as i said before personal taste and freedom.
There are so many prog bands not featured on here, that have gone by without a mention, that i have managed to aquire. Many of the bands on here i have no intention of aquiring, especially the prog metal nonsense. Give me real heavy metal.
But i like the chance to voice an opinion, something i thought progarchives was famous for. Rudeness, or nastiness is only measured in the individual, a bit like religion. We all have opinions to voice, especially if it doesn't sit well with the heirarchy.
