What albums do you think are absolute essential classics by bands not listed in the top hundred, IMO I think some of these albums are a lot better than some albums and groups in the top 100

Here's mine so far:

Univers Zero - Herersie

Can - Tago Mago

Magma - Udu Wudu

Neu! 75

Magma - Kohntarkosz

Can - Future Days

Can - Ege Bamyasi

Magma - MDK

Univers Zero - Ceux du dehores

Faust IV

I would add Frank Zappa's Hot Rats, but I don't know if he is still in the top 100 list, same goes for Brian Eno's another Green World.

sometimes there are  albums that take the truly special progster to appreciate... let the masses have their DT and their Genesis and Rush.  These albums are the gems discovered by exploriing, progressing in your prog explorations .. and of course  following great advice/recommends.

The first that comes to mind is Comus - First Utterance, but I can see why not many like it. Ash ra temple s/t is another gem. Grobschnitt - Solar music live is another one... There are many bands that aren't in the top 100 and have masterpieces, but I don't know all of them and I don't say its a masterpiece unless I listen to it for about 2-3 months.

Hard to believe Tago Mago isn't in the top 100 - agree it's definitely a classic.  All the way down to #264 at this writing.  Wow.

Interesting list because I've picked up 6 of those in the last month or so (Tago Mago, Future Days, Ege Bamyasi, Udu Wudu, Neu!75, and Faust IV).  Just got into krautrock and Magma recently and am totally hooked on the stuff.

I think Phallus Dei by Amon Duul II is another classic that deserves to be in the top 100, or at least quite a bit higher than where it stands now at #457.  Not an easy listen, but great stuff once you get into it.

I don't know if it's overlooked as much as Zeuhl really isn't for everyone.. I know I've tried to expose many to Magma for example... it really is an acquired taste to some.. unless you are really serious about prog.. people just move on to what catches their ear on the first listen or two.  Some however, like myself,  fell in love with it on the first listen.  It's not overlooked as much as it really just isn't for everyone... and admit it... we like it that way...

Gnidrolog's Lady Lake is continuosly overlooked.

Trout Mask Replica and Pavlov's Dog's Pampered Menial deserve spots too.

The term "Top 100" means "100 Most Popular"....   even if it's the "experts" (us) who came up with the list.  Popularity is not one of the requirements for inclusion in the category of masterpiece.  Having said that, who gets to decide what is and isn't a masterpiece?   Maybe a peer group of prog musicians?

I wouldn't necessarily suspect that most people supplying 5 star ratings for albums in the Top 100 are experts or anything. It's just that, a popular albums list and, even in this case, it is advisable to keep on looking for albums outside of the list, much like you do in mainstream top lists, besides the fact that the music in Top 100 varies from tolerable(well, most of it) to great .

Some of my absolute favourite albums which are not in the top 100:
Gong - You
Peter Hammill - The Fall of the House of Usher (1999 version)
Nik Turner's Sphynx - Xitintoday (this album is probably too rare and obscure, but it is one of the very best prog recordings ever).
Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time
High Tide - Sea Shanties
Mother Gong - Fairy Tales

Hawkwind: Doremi Fasol Latido, Warrior on the Edge of Time, Levitation and Sonic Attack.

Gong: The Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy.

Andrew Lloyd Webber: Variations.

I wouldn't really want to see Can in the top 100 - Can, popular? I don't think so!

Think of the damage to credibility that would cause...

I think the essence of "popular" would mean "what mostly everybody likes the most". The gems and likings of prog of one's personal horizon, by that, shouldn't even be a collective taste. Wink

I just had a look at the Top 100, and I have to agree with Yukorin about its being rather conservative. Obviously, being based on site users' ratings, it includes some albums that leave me puzzled to say the least... That said, here's a few albums I consider prog masterpieces (or near-masterpieces) not included there:

Hatfield and the North - s/t and The Rotters' Club
National Health - s/t
High Tide - Sea Shanties and s/t
U.K. - s/t and Danger Money
King Crimson - Discipline
Deep Purple - In Rock and Machine Head

Solaris: Nostradamus
After Crying: Struggle for Life
The Morrigan: Masque
Magna Carta: Lord Of The Ages
Alphataurus:Alphataurus
Azahar: Elixir
Gong: You
Incredible String Band: The hangmans Beautiful Daughter
Kingston Wall: Kingston Wall II
Lift: Moment of Hearing
Guy Manning: Matter of Life and Death (+ many more)
Nemo: Si, Prelude a la Ruine
New Trolls: Concerto Grosso I and II
Overhead: Metaepitome
Pekka Pohjola: Pahkasilmä Kaarnakorva
Rare Bird: As Your Mind Flies By
Wigwam: Fairyport
De De Lind: Io Non So Da Dove Vengo E Non So Dove Mai Andrò, Uo Mo È Il Nome Che Ni Han Dato
Contemporary Dead Finnish Music Ensemble: Ideal Standards vol 1.

And if some of the above happends to be in the top 100 - then thats okay Smile

Earth & Fire: Song of the Marching Children, with the eponymous 18 minutes epic. Mellotron ala "in the wake of Poseidon" and my favourite female vocalist of all.

If you can find it, pick-up the compilation CD of their two first albums (Song of... and Atlantis). The sleeve is of the ugliest you can imagine (some kind of wallpaper with a photograph of the band in the late seventies when they had sadly turned disco) but the music content is amazing.

This Dutch band is really-really underrated, most probably because their LPs were always difficult to find outside Holland.

I think that it would be useful to see the favorite albums of a user which have a low average rating and/or a low number of ratings. I think these say more about the user than whether he likes CttE or one of the other "failsafe" albums.

Stay tuned for that feature on my website - maybe evn in the sig ("favorite underground albums").

There is one that should definitely be there. Peter Gabriel's third album. That is a masterpiece.

ClapClapClap Though I have to admit I have a slight preference for its follow-up, the so-called "Security" album. However, both records contain some of Peter's best-ever songs, such as "Intruder", "No Self-Control" and the wonderful "San Jacinto", a personal favourite of mine.

And how could I forget Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love"?Heart

Yes, most popular = quite conservative ... unfortunately.

I think the essence of "popular" would mean "what mostly everybody likes the most". The gems and likings of prog of one's personal horizon, by that, shouldn't even be a collective taste. Wink

That would be grim! Big smile (Speaking of grimness, have you seed my epic post on the third page of the Rogues Gallery thread. I had to mention you there. EmbarrassedSleepyLOL)

?????????????????

First off, progressive music is far from conservative (IMO) - I trust you are using the phrase in context. Perhaps 'predicable' would be a better term for what you want to convey. Big smile

The top 100 spans all decades and most genres. There are over 40 groups (quick count) represented. It provides an excellent springboard for anyone interested in getting into 'prog rock' or expanding their musical horizons. Personally this website has led me to explore new genres and to new groups. I have been listening to the 'classics' since the early 70's and have revived my interest in prog rock because of this site. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks...

If you don't like the top 100 then you should continue to write reviews, I have read your's and they are well written and informative. Just on the strength of one of your reviews I have to go out and acquire the Hellebore album (great review by the way). I would love to get a vinyl copy, just checked, nothing on e-bay...

As time goes on the top 100 should become more ecclectic, but the dinosaurs of prog shall always have a place at the table - it's just the way history works.

And one more thing - I have been collecting vinyl LP's for 30 years now and currently have 1500+. How the &%!$# have you acquired the number you have in such a short time (I'm assuming you've only been listening and collecting for 5 years or so).
I'M SOOOO JEALOUS!!! Thumbs Up

Keep writing reviews - I will keep exploring.

Cheers

There isn't enough variety. A Yes release DVD from 2002 beats anything by Magma and Can ? !  As much as I love Yes this is off-putting. Fan-boy stuff.

If I wanted to buy everything that was recommened here on the 100 I'm gonna end up with one helluva prog-by-numbers collection. There is, of course, no disrespect to yourself or any other progarchives user. There is so much to learn here. But the lack of variety (40 bands in 100) is shocking.

OSI - OSI
OSI - Free
Transatlantic - SMPTe
Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever
Spock's Beard - V
Spock's Beard - Snow
Angra - Holy Land
Angra - Temple of Shadows

For the most part though, the Top 100 is pretty close to what I like.

I have to agree with Firepuck. The list is not perfect but it's a good place to start with. To those who are upset about DVD and so just choose "studio albums only" and then it will make more sense.

However, it's another fine way to be exposed to music one does'nt know so I'll pay my share :

Can - Tago mago, Magna - Udu wudu and mainly Robert Wyatt - Rock bottom are choices I support with all my heart. others :

King crimson - starless & bible black,Islands, Discipline, Thrak and The power to believe.
VDGG - The least we can do is wave to each other and World record.
Peter Hamil - The silent corner & the empty stage and Over
Jethro Tull - Heavy horses
Robert Wyatt - Old rottenhat
Kate Bush - The dreaming
Matching mole - Little red record
Talk talk - Spirit of eden and Laghing stock
Moody blues - In search of the lost chord and Question of balance
Amon dull II - Phalus dei
Focus - Moving waves
Sylvian & Fripp - Dammage
U.K. - s/t
Deep purple - s/t (IMO it's milions time better than In rock)
Trafic - John Barlycorn must die
Strawbs - From the witchwood
Pink floyd - Atom heart mother
Vangelis - Heaven & hell
Aphrodite's child - 666
Proto-kaw - Early recordings from Kansas
ELP - Works vol I
also Renaissance's Scheherezade tend to get in and out the list and must be there IMO.

Here's mine so far:

Univers Zero - Herersie

Can - Tago Mago

Magma - Udu Wudu

Neu! 75

Magma - Kohntarkosz

Can - Future Days

Can - Ege Bamyasi

Magma - MDK

Univers Zero - Ceux du dehores

Faust IV

I would add Frank Zappa's Hot Rats, but I don't know if he is still in the top 100 list, same goes for Brian Eno's another Green World.

I agree with that list... all underrated masterpieces... sorry for those who still don't listen this awsome albums...

My view is that the term 'Masterpiece' is used altogether too loosely to describe albums which although they may be very, very good are not and never will be masterpieces. But I guess it's a matter of definition and semantics.

For what it's worth,I feel the same about 5star reviews and ratings which can be very misleading. I find myself applying an 'acrooss the board' discount to many reviews and ratings otherwise I'd be totally broke running out and buying all these essential works of art and then deciding to use them as drinks coasters.

Anyway, to get into the spirit of things, one you should definitely run out and buy from a band not in the top 100 is AIR CUT by Curved Air. It's just so good - call it what you will!

I agree 100%. "Air Cut" is a great album, and Eddie Jobson's performance on it is nothing short of spectacular - considering that he was only 17 at the time.

I seem to remember a post where someone created a top 100 list with only the top listed album from each group allowed on the list - or maybe I was just thinking of doing it... (more caffeine please).
Here is what the current top 100 would compress to. It would be interesting to see what the other 60 bands and their albums would be.
Perhaps this would be a list that is less about "fan-boy-ism" and more representative of the music we love. A list like this may allow up and coming bands or 'new discoveries' to move into the radar of members and visitors more quickly, creating even more interest in progressive rock (just a thought).

Firepuck is going in the right direction: you can't complain with the results of a mathemetical formula. 2+2=4 and it always will, even if we really believe it should be 5. If you don't like the results, then change the formula/algorithm.

I'm not sure if simply retaining the top album by a given artist will do the trick, as bands such as King Crimson certainly have more than one of the top 100 albums in prog history. Maybe that single-album system could work if you changed the categorization to list the "top-100 artists of prog" instead of focusing on the albums.

Other than that, it's probably just a question of exposure. If you really feel that most people are not "getting it," then continue the process of proselization until enough people are converted to your pet albums and those albums end up on the top-100. Personally, I think people come to various albums in their own times and in their own ways. That process of discovery is what makes the journey and search all worthwhile. Regardless, time will continue to refine the list. Of course, there's nothing stopping anyone from putting up their own site or writing their own book about what they think shuould be considered the top-100 prog albums. In the meantime, the question has to be asked: "why is it important to change this list in the first place? Why should it be less 'predictable' or 'conservative?'" In order to be more entertaining? more 'accurate'? more welcoming of diversity? to validate our own personal tastes?

Posted By: Firepuck

The captain is correct in that it is the journey of discovery which expands our collections. Without this website (and the top 100 list) I would never have renewed my interest in prog nor gotten into; Anglagard, Porcupine Tree, Focus, IQ, and Le Orme to name a few.
These discoveries have whet my progressive whistle and now I search further into the database to try the more obscure groups. It is an inevitable journey that I, and I'm sure many other members, face and look forward to.

Ambrosia's self titled debut album. Great from start to finish. The songs "Nice Nice Very Nice", "Time Waits For No One", "Make Us All Aware", "Mama Frog", and the awesome "Drink Of Water" are all Classic Prog songs! Nomimated for a Grammy as best recorded album of 1975. Alan Parsons does a brilliant job mixing this one. Awesome headphone album due to the amazing recording.
