What would you get in your stocking if you'd been naughty this year?

Peter: the complete "Heavy Metal's Greatest Hits" boxed set

VC/ DJ: the FCC's "Standards and Practices" read by Mariah Carey

maani: a subscription to "Hustler Humor", delivered monthly to his workplace

gdub: the complete works of Michael Moore

Vibrationbaby: an autographed photo of me sitting in a cockpit (I'm sorry, I mean 'flight deck')

threefates: Emerson and Palmer, but NOT Lake (I know, that's still a pretty good gift)

Fragile: "The Decline of Western Civilization" by Penelope Spheeris

Not by any means a comprehensive list...some of you are so positive it's difficult to pick out the perfect wrong gift. Please add your own ill wishes for this holiday season!

Man, it scares me that he's President and he can't even figure out how to read a book (or ride a Segway, pronounce nuclear, run a country, tell the truth, or eat a pretzel)

Never mind lumps of coal - has anyone missed the news about the earthquake off Sumatra?

I have friends Christmassing in Thailand and the Maldives

Seems strange that I recently finished reading a book about Krakatoa - that whole region is the most tectonically unstable and constantly active in the world, according to the book. I didn't believe the claims that it was more unstable than the Pacific "Ring of Fire" until this morning...

What a thing to get for Christmas.

Last I heard, over 10,000 dead and still rising.

I heard about that last night.. how horrible.  I have friends who actually live in Malaysia.. I hope they're alright... and I was in the islands of Malaysia and Thailand (on that side) last year at around this time... absolutely beautiful beaches... thats just too sad!!

I understand that India being the furtherest away... is where most the dead are.  How scary!!

This does not take into account the ones that will die from the disease from the exposed bodies and the fouled water/food supply. Just goes to show that saftey is an illusion.  You have to appreciate every moment you have.

According to christian "reasoning" it would have to mean just that. And consequently,he absolutely adores us Scandinavians since natural disasters are as rare in these parts as words of wisdom from George W.Bush. Makes you think, doesn't it? Oh no,I forgot, christians don't have that particular habit....

Actually that is not true Pixel.  Jesus himself said "It rains on the just and unjust" Mt. 5:45  to quell that kind of thinking.

A “Cataclysmic act of God” is term used by Insurance companies to get out of paying claims.

I wasn't saying that to agree or disagree.  I was commenting on  his thoughts of what Christians beleive about such events. What Pixel said is not what what they are taught.   Quoting the bible was for that reason.  Not to say that there is not those of the sect that wouldn't try and use such events as a 'judgement' .

they say there is more than 50,000 dead but they don't have the official count yet. If there is a relief fund or something I' going to give some money (not that money will make it all better)

I heard on the adio, that there was little economic damage, for no major industrial zones where hit by the desaster. how cinical can you get.

Against my principle, but I will donate some money also. Hope it will be used well, although I have serious doubts on the intent of most so called charityfunds.

That can't be right for areas like tha Maldives - there are, like, 1,200 islands, almost all of which depend on tourism or fishing for their livelihoods.

Since most of the holiday accommodation is built on stilts in the ocean itself, most holiday homes were flattened. Any fishing boats were destroyed.

I've heard today that the East coast of Africa has also been counting the cost of this in terms of lives - it's not just the Indians and the tourists that are getting hit. I doubt very much this was an act of God - since it's come up from the most unstable subductive tectonic plate area in the world; from 25 kilometres inside the earth... sounds more like the work of the devil to me.

I've seen the original of this pic where the book is the right way up - I can't be arsed to find it online, but I'm sure it won't be too hard to find i you do a picture search.

I'm hardly a supporter of GWB, but I think we should accept a few things:

He won the 04 election and will be in charge for the next 4 years

He may not be the world's deepest thinker, but he is reasonably fluent in a foriegn language (Spanish)

The real villain is Karl Rove, along with think tanks like the Adam Smith Institute and the Cato Institute who are the architects of the destructive neocon philosophy which informs his policies.

Now let's get over it and get back to squabbling about prog.
