Have you ever experienced this feeling? You just went out and bought the new release by (insert prog band name here)..... You already own several albums by the band, and you dismiss the new one simply because it sounds so similar to the albums you have. The songwriting, performances, etc. are just as good, but the lack of growth leaves a stale taste in your mouth.
On the other hand, somebody else buys the same album, except it's the first one he's ever heard by the band. He later buys some of the others, but decides this one's by far the best of the lot!
So, do you think there's a syndrome at work here? Perhaps our tastes are overly influenced by the order in which we hear albums by certain groups. I've seen so many people say they prefer Collins-era Genesis, then admit that the first album they heard by them was, say, "Wind & Wuthering"....

You have a point there, it is the reverse of somebody not being "into" a band saying "all their music sounds the same" - every "new" release of a favourite group often does not come up to expectations, either because you are tired of them, outgrown them and need to move on or the group have hit a brick wall in their creativity. Maybe some bands produce covers when the ideas box is empty, to give themselves a boost until new ideas come up, right or wrong??

As I generally tend to discover bands by the earliest albums, I would tend to agree with SW about the "more of the same" (provided it is the case of course , but I wish Genesis did more of the same from W&W onwards). However, if I start with an album that stands late in their discography, I try to make sure to look at it in its proper place after I've listened to others. I do not let the "first bought" syndrome affect me.
For modern prog bands, it is especially the case: From Retroipolis untilm the new albums, they all sound the same to me; Late 70's JR/F records sound a lot alike. ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Yes, I certainly do. That's why I posted recently a thread called "First Impressin" (situated in Prog Music Lounge) where I was asking the similar question. I believe this is a psychological issue somehow...

| Soundsweird's theory doesn't sound weird at all, I believe him. Many times this phenomena can be seen for example concerning books which have been filmatized. Those who have seen the film first, like it better than the book and vice versa. |
