I like Keira Knightley as well and Kate Beckinsale is the daughter of the late Richard Beckinsale.
Of course, both are English too, so that's a big advantage.
Kate Beckinsale was in Underworld wasn't she? Not a bad film at all.

Tony, I'm with you: Monica Belluci. Simply among the most beautiful women who has ever walked the planet. Same with Catherine Zeta-Jones (how could all of you forget her?)
Of the poll choices, Jackie Bisset, who was my first crush ever ("Bullitt," 1968). And I have a neat anecdote to tell about her.
In 1991, I worked from my office (at a biotech form) with actor Terence Stamp on his first novel (I served as pre-publication editor). Terence spent half the year in the U.S., and half the year at his home in the U.K. Usually, he would fax me corrections, additions, etc. On one occasion, his fax cover sheet indicated that he was "off to have tea with my friend Jackie Bisset." I faxed back to him, "Please tell Ms. Bisset I say hi, that she was my first crush, and that she is still one of the most beautiful women in the world."
Fast forward about two weeks.
I am in my office when the office manager comes over and tells me that there is a long distance call for me from the U.K. I assumed it was Terence. I picked up the phone and said hello. A woman's voice said, "Hello? Is this Ian?" I said it was. She said, "Hi, this is Jacqueline Bisset. I wanted to thank you for the kind words." I was, of course, practically speechless. Still, I was able to stammer out, "Terence put you up to this, didn't he?" She laughed, "Yes, I'm afraid so." We exchanged niceties for a few minutes, and I thanked her profusely for calling me. "My pleasure," said she, "And thank you again for your kind words."
It was one of the most amazing, unexpected moments in my life, and I cherish it to this day.
Peace.

Well my own personal choice would undoubtedly have been Diana Rigg, circa 'The Avengers'. Truly beautiful, intelligent and a lot of class. And she was (is) a great actress. Qualities lacking from a fair few actresses today.

Can I jump on the Keira Knightley bandwagon... so to speak
Especially as she was dressed in the otherwise risible 'King Arthur' - just a few leather straps, some blue paint, and a surly expression.

i'm not sure what's the meaning of that expression here; anyway, scarlett's played in sofia coppola's "lost in translation" (one of my all-time favourites), in woody allen's "match point" (a masterpiece) and the film about vermeer that i already mentioned (great one, also). i don't think the incidental hollywood crap "the island" diminishes anything of her great actress stature.

Well I like 60s/70s action films and television. That's my main genre, though I love westerns and old 60s/70s British horror films (the Hammer films studio). Not diminishing Scarlett Johannson at all- I just never seen any of the films she appeared in.
I'm also rather fond of Diana Rigg's replacement in The Avengers, Linda Thorson, who played Tara King in that show.

None of the above (okay, maybe Bisset), but rather an earlier era's more lush, curvaceous standard of womanly beauty:

Lucky photographers!

I'm not so wild about Ingrid Pitt myself. But you've reminded me of another actress I'm rather enamoured of; Madeline Smith. She was in various Hammer horror films (including a rather infamous scene with Ingrid Pitt in a film called 'The Vampire Lovers'...) and most of the TV shows I watch.
