I've had Mr. Bungle's "California" for a few weeks now, and wow, what a great album. I love it more each time I play it. It's almost as if They Might Be Giants went prog, took some influence from Zappa, Morphine, and maybe even Tears for Fears (among many others), and threw in some metal for good measure. I could be way off, but this is a really hard act to describe.

I know that "Disco Volante"is supposed to the apex, but I also hear that it is quite different. Would I like it? I am a big Magma fan, so strange things don't bother me.

So what does everyone else think? Great band, silliness, or something else.

Disco Volante is ok...but it meanders a little too much to really retain any entertainment value. My favorite is their self-titled, followed by California.

"Sweet charit-ehhhhh! AAAHHHHH! aaAAAAHHHhh!"

Heh, I love Patton's voice.

You haven't heard Mr.Bungle until you've heard Disco Volante Wink

IMO is one of the best album ever made. California is my second fav. album by them and my least favorite is their debut wich I don't find to be that much of a strong effort.

Disco is definitely their most cohesive, varied, and flowing album I feel.

Just recently got the self-titled CD and really like it. I've liked what Mike Patton did with Faith No More, especially "Angel Dust", and gave it a try. Yes it's a bit silly at times but IMHO quite innovative.

I love Bungle, I figure we give Steve Wilson the title of "The Wizard" Mike Patton deserves the title "The Genie"  I like My Ass is on Fire, Air Conditioned Nightmare, Vainity Fair and Carosel, I am a limewire whore with no money which is why I cannot say that I have heard a full album by them. Nonetheless Most of Mike Pattons bands are some of the most experimental and progressive out there for the sheer fact that they dont care what they say or do, Mike Patton=Frank Zappa, O Ye Ogg thank you for the return of your most powerful warrior haha.

Bungle rules.  "Ars Moriendi" is the most intense song... maybe ever. Tongue

California is a great place to start, but you definitely have to get Disco Volante. Especially if you like weird music, as you say... it's a must-own. I'm not really a big fan of the debut album though.

Mr. Bungle was phenomenal. I lament the fact that we're only left with 3 releases! Cry

My favorites, in order:
Disco Volante
California
Mr. Bungle

If you keep in mind how young and immature they were for the first release, it helps with context.

"My Ass is On Fire" is pretty awesome, IMO. Tongue

Their debut is extremely quirky, almost "circus" metal/funk with loads of Zappa-influence and saxophones.

"Disco Volante" shifts genres with every track. Thus, the first track is sludgecore metal, the second is a hockey-rink organ instrumental, the third is jazz metal followed by demented surf-rock, the fourth is middle eastern techno, the fifth is a RIO Italian opretta, and so on.

"California" is 60's surf rock, pop, swing, doo-wop, rockabilly, and other 50's type genres mixed with some contemporary ideas and lyrics, and fused in a very innovative fashion. Also, the production is perhaps the best to be heard ANYWHERE.

Mr. Bungle is a great band. Disco Volante is highly recommeded! Very sick and weird.

Also, do not miss their debut. It's an excellent album as well!

All three of their albums are great, but be warned: Disco Volante will mess with your head! (another reason to get it)

I prefer their self-titled followed by California.  Disco Volante's my least favorite, but it's still very good.

Also try some of Patton's other projects.  Fantomas is a great start.  Director's Cut and Delirium Cordia are my favorites by Fantomas.

Just got 'California' some weeks ago. I'm like TOTALLY addicted to that album. I will order 'Disco Volante' soon somewhere. Patton is a genius...

Disco is either the most loved or hated album by Mr. Bungle.  I think its their best.  California is a super album too.  Disco is just the most bizarre but REWARDING album ever!  It makes you want to be creative.  It inspires you to not listen to the radio!!  It is an album that can make you feel scared (listen to the BEnds all the way to the end, the most intense ending ever!!!!), feel happy (listen to Backstrokin or Chemical Marriage), laugh like crazy (Ma Meeshka, After School Special, the SECRET SONG), want to dance and headbang (Merry Go Bye-Bye).  Interesting thing for me about Bungle: My favorite songs on their album are the last ones: Dead Goon, Merry Go BYE-BYE, and Goodbye Sober DAy.  I could play them all day.  Anyone here absolutely love the SECRET SONG?  Its so cool!  Anyway, listen to Disco all the way through, if you dont like a certain part, dont worry, there could be a part in the next minute that will make you so musically satisfied, I happen to like all the parts!!!!  Anyway, have fun with this one!

bungle is a tight band hehe! All 3 of their albums are fantasticly maade. My favorite changes each time i listen to that paticular album! i can agree that disco vaulta puts randumness in purpose just for the randomnes, and i think the bends was a horrible try to sound weirsd just on purpose the bends=horrible song. If  you like them, fantomos is your deal, it is the countinuation of mrbungle.

That may be a very bold statement, but I agree! I love Disco Volante so much that I everytime I listen to it gets better and better. Concidering all the craziness the album has I find it to be perfect. Not a single minute of crap in it.

I'm die hard Bungle fan also so . . . be careful with what I say about the band . . .

All three Bungle albums are great, and they couldn't be more different from one another.

Disco Volante is the grower.  The first 20 or so times you listen to it, you'll be like "WTF mate?"  But it will eventually burrow under your skin and never let go.  I enjoy it more with every listen.

Bungle were made to create Disco Volante... the top of Patton's career and one of my top 3 all time favorites. I loved it from the first listen, but I understand that it can be inaccessible. The debut is pretty childish, cruel and gross; I like it but have trouble taking it as serious music. California is too poppy though there are some awesome songs on it.

California takes the cake for me. It's so perfectly captured and produced. It's "pop" aspect is what makes it so great. It's how pop music should be made.

I agree with the self titled, some songs are just plain disgusting for the sake of it, like Dead Goon or Girls of Porn (Squeeze Me Macaroni is kinda gross, but funny and so rapid fire you can't process it all at once). That said, My Ass Is On Fire is one of my favorite Bungle tracks

BTW If you want an idea of what Fantomas is like, imagine that Disco Volante made a band, sped up half their stuff, and added twice as many sound effects

Agreed Agreed Agreed.

California is a fantastic album. So is the self-titled. Haven't heard Disco yet, but it's on the to-purchase list.

Absolutely. If pop music actually was like this, I would start listening to the radio again.
