I got all my CDs stolen a while back and i'm rebuilding my CD collection.I was hoping you guys could help me in my CD selections.My favorite band is Genesis and I'm looking for similar styles , which I am told is classified as Neo Prog.I've bought all the Marillion CDs with Fish. I'm fairly new to Prog groups 1980 + . I've bought almost all the IQ CDs and I really like Tales from the lush Attic and the Wake which is in the style I love.There is also Grandstand,Il Trono dei Ricordi,Trespass I really enjoy.I've gotten most Pendragon CDs which are OK.Arena is a bit heavier but good. I'm thinking of listening to CAST and Twelth Night which I hear are very good. Can you guys suggest groups and Albums in the Genesis style .Thanks aztech |

In the Genesis style, you have all the symphonic progressive scene : Locanda delle fate and almost the entire italian progressive scene, Anthony Philipps, earlier Steve Hackett, Camel (from 'Snowgoose' to 'Nude', then much neo-prog oriented albums from 'Dust and dreams' to 'A nod and a wink'), Yes, Gordon Giltrap ('The Peacock Party' features Ian Mosley on drums), Ambrosia (their two first albums), Chris Squire ('Fish out of water'), UK ('UK'). Sagrado Coraçao da terra is also a great brazilian symphonic prog band, with sublime violin and voices. But if you want to know more groups in the vein of Marillion, listen to Collage ('Moonshine'), Aufklärung ('de'la' tempesta... l'oscuro piacere'), Saga (all their discography from 1978 until 1985), Clepsydra ('Alone'), Pallas ('The sentinel') and even Eric Johnson and the only Steve Morse solo album ('High tension wires'). Rush recorded also albums close to the neo-prog genre (from 'Signals' to 'Counterparts', with a special mention to 'Power windows'). I would definitely try out Flower Kings if youre a fan of
Genesis, like me, they have the same approach to music I think, but with more jazz and sometimes very close to the Canterbury sound. Glass Hammer is another good try I think. And of course, all the other suggestions by others here, I agree completely, Chandelier and Clepsydra is great. Are you familiar with the band, Eloy? To my ears they are very much Genesis influenced without being slavish about it. In fact I've been enjoying their work quite a bit lately. |

Thank you very much everyone ! This is why I love this site : Its a whole bunch of helpful people who want to discover Prog they don't know, and are willing to advise others on the Prog they do know. I have written down every single suggestion and I will try to find and download the MP3s to see If I enjoy them enough to buy the CDs . I have Collage "SAFE" but not ('Moonshine') ?,I have Clepsydra "Fears" but not ('Alone') I have Pallas the Cross & the Crucible but not "The Sentinel". I have : Aufklärung, RUSH, SAGA,Flower Kings, ,Arena "The Visitor" ,IQ "7th House" , Satellite "A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset" The following others I don't know but will explore: Chandelier, Jadis , Eloy, Glass Hammer, Iluvatar "Children" , Carptree "Superhero", High Wheel"There, Cast "Al-Bandaluz, Galleon "From Land To Ocean", "ICU "Now and here" If you have any other suggestions in a Genesis style please let me know. aztech |

| Hi, Aztech! If you want to listen a couple of lost Genesis era Gabriel albums, I recommend you try to find these: The Watch ("Ghost") and Nightwatch ("Twilight"). If you listen one or both of them, you'll believe Genesis plays again with Gabriel singing. And in the neo style, any Citizen Cain album is a Genesis clon. |

Hi Guys, Just to let you know I really worked with your suggestions,yesterday I went to a prog store in Montreal and stayed 4 hours and gave a quick listen to 15 CDs from the following groups : Garden Wall,Galleon,Camel,JethroTull,Cast,Glass Hammer,Violet District,White Willow,Chandelier,Iluvatar,Pallas,Clepsydra,Chris Squire. I ended up buying : 3 Camels : Mirage ,Snowgoose,Moonmadness (For some unknown reason I was never exposed to Camel before now and its good stuff ! Any other great ones :Harbour ?) Jethro Tull: A Passion Play (In the style of Thick as a Brick which I enjoy.How is Minstrel ?) Cast :Legacy (New discovery; love the style. I might want the whole collection any albums to avoid ? ) Pallas : Sentinel (I have the Crosse and Crucible already any other good ones) Any other suggestions ??? I'm hungry for good neo prog

Glass Hammer is really great but I would compare them more to Yes and not to Genesis
 But I don't know them very well.And I really can recomment The Flower Kings, their Instrumental parts are awesome, try "Retropois", "Unfold the Future" or "Space Revolver"
Aren't the Flower Kings considered as a Retro-Prog, but where's the difference?

Vegates Diddy and welcome aboard. You'll like it here, its a great prog site ! I agree with you ,I did listen to 2 GlassHammer CDs, and it's definetiley is in the YES style. I did enjoy it, even if I prefer the Genesis style.I'll probably buy some of their albums. Thanks but,I have the main Flower King albums already . I can't say I liked Chandelier -Pure- that much because it sounded more like Synth Pop Rock that varies a little bit like prog. Like I said before, I'll take any suggestions close to the Genesis style ie :lots of great keyboard solos and textures ,Gabriel like voices,flutes,hackette type guitars & acoustic guitars... aztech |

No, of course it's NOT P. Diddy ... It's a nickname all of my friends use and it refers to my surname "Dietrich"
I can't help it, all people just say "Diddy" even if I didn't mentioned the nickname before
It's horrible, the first thing all people think about is P. Diddy
 ...  If you want to have Bands sounding like Genesis try Van der Graaf (Generator), they are awesome, very melancholic and sometimes very aggressive AND the best thing: They use a Soxophone and no Guitar (but sometimes Robert Fripp appeares as a guest). And the voice is even better than Gabriel because Peter Hammill's voice is great and very variable (mellow and aggressive)!

You can download songs from VdGG from the website. I love those mp3's and I'm going to buy an album soon!  Great saxophone-player!

I must confess I don't know VDGG, heck I just recently found out about Camel and I 'm not that young ! But I will check it out . So far what I 've enjoyed the most in the Neo Prog genre are : 2 first IQ albums, Il Trono dei Ricordi, Grand Stand, Tresspass and I just recently discovered Cast which I think I will very much enjoy. If anyone can suggest other groups along those lines I still have a credit of about 100 CDs to buy ...

Dando: I wish they would be Canadian Government free CD credits but alas no, they are a Prog CD store $ credits because it was paid in advance. So I go in every couple of weeks to the Prog store and tell the owner what do you have that might interest me, then I just sit down listen to a whole bunch of stuff with the head phones and have a real good time.Thats why I asked you guys for help I have over 100 CDs to choose, from a very vast selection of prog ! so keep those suggestions coming. |

What part of Canada? I'm from Detroit an used to go to Winsor on occasion, as well as Saint Kits (Catherines) and London. It's been twenty years, alas. Prog store? Really. Even Tower records out here in Cali sells top 40 crap. If it weren't for Amazon and e-bay, I'd be a stooge Really, check out Echolyn, I'm floored by those guys. |

I'm from Montreal Québec (incidently this site is a Québecois site !) We are very lucky to have a Prog store in Montreal. Its a store owned by a guy who is a Prog fan and who knows his stuff .The store has all kinds of used cds and specialises in Prog,Metal Prog,and some Classic Rock.If anybody drops by Montreal I highly suggest it drop me an email and I'll tell you the location. Never made it there. I love to travel. If you show up in sunny California, give a holler and we'll toast Prog with some dark brew. I'd love to have the capital to open a shop like that. Who knows, it could happen. All the retail stores have closed up the mom and pops here. |

Oh my Gaaawd!!! This must be heaven!! A Prog Store??? Jeez I think I move to Montreal, can't be much colder than Dublin at the moment!! Anyways, if you're Canadian you should really check out the Toronto band FM. Am I the only one who knows them? They made a number of albums but the ones to look out for (i.e. which are pure, brilliant prog) are: 1. Black Noise (re-released in 93 on CD) 2. Surveillance (does anyone know if this is available on CD?) 3. City of Fear (available on CD?) 4. RetroActive (Live recording released in 94) No. 1-3 were released sometime around 1980. If you're not sure go for the RetroActive album, it's a good cross-section of their best material & also contains a CD-ROM multimedia file which is really interesting too! Ever heard of U.K. ??? A realy great Band...(You can read about their album "Danger money" in this forum..."Featured CD")
Or maybe try some National Health or Caravan (both playing Canterbury)
But I think you should check out VdGG first if you want the bands sounding a bit like Genesis...

I don't know what the music of FM sounds like, but I downloaded two solo-songs from Nash The Slash and they were weird, but very boring electronic music. That guy must be very ugly that he hides his face like that. It's looking pretty cool, actually |

I know I'm lucky "a prog store " near my home ! I wonder how many of those exist in the world ? I bet many people from Montreal doesn't even know it exists ! U.K. , National Health, never heard of ? Caravan ... have listen to a few tracka a while back and don't really remember so not really memorable to me. As stated before I will check out VDGG ;-) and thanks for the suggestions they are always welcomed.
