I'm pretty new to Dream Theater; but, one of the songs that has really sucked me in is "Surrounded" from Images And Words. The song packs so much emotion in 5 1/2 minutes. More importantly, however, is LaBrie's vocal performance. I know it's not their most epic song; but, really adds a nice flavor to Images And Words (which I love).

What are your thoughts regarding "Surrounded"?

definetly a nice song, but not among dream theaters best tracks (my favourites would be a change of seasons, learning to live, metropolis pt.1, the whole scenes from a memory album and six degrees of inner turbulence).

This is one Dream Theater song I'm lukewarm about.  I find it to be incredibly cheesey for the first half, but the middle to end (about 2 and a half minutes), there's some excellent music to be heard.

I like it, but, it doesn't really sound like Dream Theater

Doesn't really sound like them, still great though. I guess I'm somewhere between the first two options.

Very good song !! It has one of the greatest Labrie's vocal performances ever, if you hear the verse that starts with "They took pictures of our dreams ...", oh, impressive !!

You can't really compare "Surrounded" to songs like "A Change Of Seasons", "Octavarium", or "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence"; but, I think it's a very cool song. Just watched the live version on www.youtube.com.

Well...I have to say that for me all Dream Theater's songs are simply AWSOME something incredible non a music created in this world!
I'm a fan of D.T. since ...2001 and their are for me the best Progressive Metal that is actually played in this world

Surrounded it's not the most WOW song, but hearing it gives you and idea of the potenciallity of the band...!

I think that verse belongs to Another Day, not Surrounded, though. The song is, in my opinion, bristling with the album's essence and charisma, thus I would rend it essential to the array of songs present, as it complements the ambience constructed throughout the album and, even though it isn't, by any means, their greatest track (or simply great), it's still an indispendable melody of near-beautiful performances, especially regarded from keyboards and vocals, albeit not so much adroit in instrumental and compositional traits, nor as appealing as the rest.

This is why you should let Robin save the day...

That's Another Day, not Surrounded ;). Both songs are great though.

Its a good song but its probably the weekist track on I&W for me, but still worth listening to.

^Yes, it may be the weakest track on the album. That really doesn't say much though, because it is a fantastic album start to finish. It doesn't sound like Dream Theater necessarily, but Dream Theater's sound is constantly evolving and what not anyway. I personally love the song.

It's easily the weakest short song.  It matches it's potential though.  "Under a Glass Moon" is the least impressive song on the album though.  It just doesn't live up to it's potential.  It would be better as an opener.

I think Dream Theater should've done what they had originally planned and put "A Change of Seasons" on Images and Words.  You could then make an album like this:

Under a Glass Moon
Another Day
Pull Me Under
Surrounded
Take the Time
Wait For Sleep
Learning to Live
Metropolis
A Change of Seasons

Under a Glass Moon would be a nice heavy opener track, and it would set a nice tone for a lighter "popier" section at the beginning of the album with each track getting more and more progressive and interesting.

What a release that would've been.

I disagree, Under a Glass Moon is a very impressive song. A Change of Seasons on I&W would make that album unbelieveably good, but I very much like it as a stand-alone track.

absolutely love this song. If ever there were a song to show to someone to show that Dream Theater isn't "all about chops and virtuosity" like some people say. The song is anchored by a simple but powerful keyboard hook (I don't think Rudess would do something that simple and powerful, with one or two exceptions) and features one of LaBrie's best performances. Incredible song. I love driving to it!!! I crank up like 15 miles over the limit (at least)!!

""they took pictures of our dreams" is from "Antoher Day", not Surrounded.... and that part isn't that impressive :P

Try that high part in Innocence Faded... one of the most impressive recordings of James LaBrie...

Great, great, great.

Was listening to it once again in my car this morning. When the guitar solo arrives ... wow, I mean WOW !!!

Though, I got very frustated with the live version of this one on Live at the Marquee. Doesn't live up to the studio version.
