There are some bands missing here: Spock's Beard, Pallas, Galahad at least. The bands I posted, and the limit is 20, are the band I like more than the other I mentioned here above. The poll is just fun, so I hope this time nobody will ...blame So vote this poll and not the other one! |

Well it should be redone then if possible because I cannot let ELP beat out Yes. I like ELP but without the guitar as the central instrument I just cannot see them as the best. Yes is the greatest prog band ever in my humble opinion with King Crimson second. Jethro Tull and Pink FLoyd are right in there after that. ------------- He whom life can no longer surprise |

The Poll that really counts (because it can't be manipulated so easily) is in the home page of ProgArchives, and there Genesis beat's everybody else by far, followed by Pink Floyd and almost a tie between Yes and Anglagard:
The top 2 , three of the five top albums are from Genesis, the first Yes album is at place 5, the first ELP album is in place 20. Iván |

When we say Genesis, I don't think we are talking about "we can't
dance" mate. Mostly Gabriel Era stuff. The rest is not Genesis. I think
I'd vote for Pinik floyd, or Genesis, or Focus, but Focus isn't here!
You can't really put up a list of 20 prog bands and expect an answer
like that; so many great bands are left out. How can you judge who the
best prog band is? You may be able to differentiate between the calibur
of bands, but not who the supreme band is. But I'm just going to add a bunch on floyd and Genesis anyway. |

Of all the prog bands listed there Camel are the ones I've seen the most. They toured endlessly in the late 70's. Are Wishbone Ash prog? I'm sure there must be a thread about the criteria of being a prog band. I was lucky in the way that Wishbone Ash and Camel always came to Cardiff. Along with Barclay James Harvest they were the bands I looked forward to seeing the most. |

While Genesis is certainly my choice for best prog group of all time, I cannot help but wonder why their Charisma label-mate Van der Graaf is not in the running! Its truly apalling . . .
