The world's biggest record company is to sell CDs in basic cardboard sleeves in a bid to compete with online sales.
Universal Music Group is introducing three tiers of packaging in Europe, also including deluxe and sturdier versions of the standard case. It expects the basic CDs to sell for about £7, the standard for about £10, and the deluxe - offering bonus CDs or DVDs - for around £14.
The company said the CD had not "had much of a revamp in the last 20 years". Stimulating sales "We thought we should reboot the consumer's experience of buying CDs," said Universal's executive vice president Max Hole. He said the basic package was aimed at stimulating sales for older albums, "similar to a paperback book". More than 26m songs were downloaded legally in the UK in 2005 - up from virtually zero two years earlier.
Universal Music Group expects its digital sales to double this year to about 10% of all sales, and predicts they will make up 25% of revenue by 2010. I alkways hatted this bloody "jewel" case which I found the opposite of the compact disc in itself >>> users hate-ly
I have privileged ther mini-Lp format whenver I could, but I doubt that Quality cardboard cover/booklets will be cheaper than those bloody plastic craps.
This was already the case of most Cd Singles anyway ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

In this age of downloading when most people are not even familiar with the names of the band members of the band theyve just downloaded,the need for fancy cases,booklets etc grows less and less important.
If it keeps prices down then why not? |

Arkama have been doing this for ages - I got a copy of Arzachel/Arzachel and Twink/Think Pink in cardboard packaging - it's a great format (and the CDs were quite cheap on Amazon  ).------------- The important thing is not to stop questioning. |

Interesting. Indeed, there are more and more cardboard "Digipack" sleeves...
That's very nice looking. But what they call basic carboard sleeves (just a piece of carboard) is very bad, as the Cd is damaged each time you put into or get out. |

Olivier , I do not think this is about digipacks, but strictly cardboard packaging, so it will be more like a vinyl sleeve.

Oh yes, if there's a cloth: no problem.
I was thinking about the excellent "Grateful dead Live at fillmore 69'" i own, a 3 Cds set in carboard, very nice looking but no plastic sheets at all!! The Cds are direct into cardboard. Very bad. |

I have many cd's in my collection that have been perfectly preserved for years in the old fashioned "jewel case", they fit in any rack you may place it in, if they get broken the cases are easily replaced. The problems i have had with slipcases and digipaks - the damn things let in dust, don't fit in the rack, they fall apart and break however careful you are. No, if a thing ain't broke, why try and fix it? -------------  Prog Archives Tour Van

If they end up like Alphataurus' LP style, then that's not so fun, as that CD is nigh on impossible to get out! I also have the Arzachel Arkama release and I like it, because it still has a sturdy plastic backing for the CD to clip onto. Infact, the new Robert Wyatt - Theatre Royal Drury Lane is in a similar box as well, as is Hatfield and the North - Hatwise Choice and Matching Mole - Matching Mole. They still fit in my rack too. -------------

Yes, I love digipacks ... but "cardboard sleeve" is basically just two pieces of cardboard glued together. It's usually used for promo discs, and I don't like it at all. This is my preference of the different types of packaging:

the Yes re-releases are in Digipacks. They are quite nice.. I hate Jewel Cases, especially the sticky crap you have to peel off. ------------- Soon, Oh soon the light Pass within and soothe this endless night
