I'll bet my money that 2112 wins... but Natural Science is my favorite, followed by Hemispheres and Fountains

Xanadu

Brilliant atmospheric, portentous intro.

Incredible final guitar solo.

Tubular bells.

Nuff said!

Natural Science is what works for me. It's my favorite Rush epic, although I dig all the others. I think this was the first album that Geddy's voice sounded GOOD to me. Over time the earlier albums became more special, but PW was and is my fav.

I'm completely and utterly in love with natural science.

And for the smurfs, I Hate smurfs, even with blueberries.

Waar komen jullie toch vandaan,

Tuut, tuut, tutututu, tuut, tuut, etc.
Ja zing maar na!
La, la, lalalala, la, ...
En nu de tweede stem!
La, la, lalalala, la, ...
En nu allemaal!
la, la, lalalala, la, ...

Kunnen jullie door een waterkraan?
Wij kunnen door een waterkraan!
En ook door een sleutelgat?
Ja, ook door een sleutelgat!
Kunnen jullie op een blokfluit spelen!
Ja, daar kunnen wij ook op spelen!
Vinden smurfen dansen fijn?
Ja, maar alleen op dit refrein!

La, la, lalalala, la,...
- He, wie is daar verkeerd aan het smurfen!
- He, zing eens netjes mee! Yes, Sir!

Waarom zijn de smurfen klein?
Omdat jullie groter zijn!
Gaan jullie met die muts naar bed?
Ja, die wordt niet afgezet!
Gaan jullie net als wij ook slapen?
Nee, wij moeten driemaal gapen!
Wat is jullie grootste wens?
Smurfen maar dat snapt geen mens!

La, la, lalalala, la, ...
(original lyrics by Vader Abraham (Pierre Cartner)

Where you come nevertheless from,
where smurfenhuisjes stand.
Have you also an own language,
yes those smurfen we all.
To do you something what we not to dare,
yes because we are real smurfen.
This is a song with a nice refrain,
you are large and we are small.

the fluitsmurf start!
Tuut, tuut, tutututu, tuut, tuut, etc.
But yes sing after!
Drawer, drawer, lalalala, drawer, ...
And now the second voice!
Drawer, drawer, lalalala, drawer, ...
And now all!
drawer, drawer, lalalala, drawer, ...

Are you are possible by a water tap?
We can by a water tap!
And also by a key breach?
Yes, also by a key breach!
Are able play you on a block-system flute!
Yes, there we can also on game!
Find do smurfen dance finely?
Yes, but only on this refrain!

Drawer, drawer, lalalala, drawer...
- He, who it has been found oneself there to the smurfen!
- He, sing once netjes! Yes, Sir!

Why are the smurfen small?
Because your larger is!
Do you go with that bonnet to bed?
Yes, those are not turned off!
Do you will sleep just like we also?
No, we must yawn three times!
What is your largest wish?
Smurfen but that get no people!

For me I was stuck between La Villa Strangiato and Xanadu but most definitely went with La Villa Strangiato. In fact I would consider La Villa Strangiato Rush's greatest song. It's just a perfect song, and no matter how perfect Xanadu also is, La Villa Strangiato will always be more perfect.

2112 and Hemispheres are nice, but I think they are way too drawn out. Rush had the power to perfect shorter epics such as La Villa Strangiato and Xanadu, but failed to make 2112, Hemispheres, and Fountains of Lamneth interesting for 20 minutes IMO.

I love 'Fountain of Lamneth' I prefer it to '2112'

I'm one of the few that really like 'Carress of steel' with the exception of a couple of tracks. I like the natural 'woody' sounding production, and mysterious atmosphere.

Tough call.  I've been hugely into Cygnus X-1 lately, so I gave it my vote.  However, The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, Hemispheres, Xanadu and The Camera Eye are all fantastic.

I can't see why anybody would even consider The Camera Eye as being in their top three for rush. I mean, had Moving Pictures not had that 10 minute synth solo of an epic on it, the album would've been so much better. I think if Rush had put a killer 20-min epic on side 2 of that album that MP would be second only to CTTE.

3) Camera eye

4) Natural science

5) Xanadu

6) 2112

7) Fountain of Lamneth

8) By Tor

9) Necromancer

10) Cygnus X-1

I always found the rythmic guitar sound on Farewell to kings very artificial and not elegant: it is very metallic can-like!

SLAP!!!

I like 'Camera eye' too. I love the build up more than anything. It took me quite a while to get into it when I first got Moving Pictures. It seemed rather repetitive for Rush. But it has a great atmosphere throughout, and good lyrics.

I went for Camera Eye too. I just adore the intro. It's the perfect build into the song and all those moogy squelches are just brilliant. It was an extrenely tough call though, as for me, La Villa Strangiato features Alex's best ever guitar playing, his solo there is amazing. Natural Science for the sound of that compressed lightly chorused electric guitar after the acoustic intro - mega. And the live version of Xanada from Exit - hard to top. They're all brilliant. But if I had to vote for one it would be Camera Eye from the best Rush album of them all MP

Wow, I'm surprised that Camera Eye is such a favorite. Now maybe I'll have to listen to it again today .

I'm also surprised that there aren't more 2112-ers voting for that album. You think prog, you think Rush, then you naturally think 2112. I mean it was never my favorite Rush epic - even though it is good - but I never thought that my view of it would be so commonly held.

It was a grower for me Sweetnighter. I owned MP for over a year before I really 'got' that track. Very subtle stuff is going on in there and on first listening, it doesn't lend itself to being a classic, I'll admit that.

It isn't my favorite, but it deserves votes.   My top 5:  Xanadu, Necromancer, 2112, Cygnus X 1, Hemispheres.  LaVilla would be up there, but i don't think it's an 'epic'

Maybe my definition of Epic is different, I'd consider Fountain of Lamneth, 2112, and Cygnus X-1 book II epics. Of those three, I like Cygnus X-1 book II best, but 2112 is very close.
By the ones available I like The Camera Eye and Natural Science best.  Followed closely by La Villa Strangiato.
