Why did you select the image for your avatar and how did you acquire your nickname. Some are obvious. But others are just plain freakin` weird!
I chose Vibrationbaby because in high school when I was playing drums a certain Rosemary McKarten who had a crush on me started to call me this and it caught on.
As for my image, I spent 9 years in the Canadian Forces flying fighter aircraft and apart from music (music was and will always be my first) this was a passion. The particular aircraft in the photo is an F-111C from 6 squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force demonstrating a dump and burn manoever at an air show at Amberly, Queensland, Australia. The aircraft was being flown by my cousin John. If anyone on the site wants a more detailed explanation as to what a dump and burn is feel free to e-mail me or PM me. If you want a more detailed viewing of the photo visit my website, it is featured on page one. As for velvetclown we know he is a master of miltiple clownish disguises.

My screen name comes from a Tool song. My avatar is the cover of Blackwater Park by Opeth.

I think I tod the story of my nickname but not sure:
One of my best friends had a weird girlfriend who said she was some kind of witch or psychic, the day he introduced me to her (all dressed in black somehow Gothic style), the first phrase she said was You are going to die!!!!! I was scared to death, but after a few seconds she finished the sentence, in the year 2068!!!
I started to laugh but she didn't move a muscle of the face, I think she believed hewr own crap, When I came to internet tried to use my name ivan, but there were many more, so I added the infamous 2068.
And my avatar is obvious, I'm a Genesis fan and Peter Gabriel is my favorite prog' vocalist and in the picture he's singing myfavorite song (The Musical Box)

Danbo is the combo of my first and last name: Dante Bodiddley. Simple really. I would have used danbodiddley, but then everyone would know my true name, hunt me down, ask for an autograph and otherwise make my life miserable.
My current, yet ever changing, avatar is my favorite guitarist and beer swilling icon, Allan Holdsworth.

My avatar (someone just mentioned this) comes from Gonzo journalism, and Hunter S. Thompson in particular. It wasn't a widely used symbol, but I like it.
My name is, of course, my first and middle. Maybe I wasn't feeling particularly creative when I first signed up...

Sweetnighter is the title of Weather Report's third album, and during
my "weather report stage" when i gobbled up every album the band ever
put out i started using that sn for pretty much every webpage i had to
have an sn for. Plus, my girlfriend thinks its cute ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)
The picture is the cover of Ayn Rand's book The Founainhead,
which is one of my all time faves. Before that, I had Yes' Relayer as
my cover and the first avatar i had was Return to Forever's Romantic
Warrior, which although is my favorite album, has a lame cover for
using as an avatar.
This
is really outdated. Now, as many of you can tell, I have Magma's logo
as my avatar... and its super cool because its in flames.

This is one of the best threads I've seen so far. I'm actually extremely surprised no one thought of it before.
I don't have an avatar because...frankly, I'm a Luddite and don't know how to add one! As for my nickname, I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you...![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Hangedman is from the tarot card. Ive actually never told anyone this, but im actually quite obsessed with it. I dont even really believe in tarot cards, but its just the image. A young man whose hung upside down yet remains completely indifferent, he even looks relaxed. My avatar is the only image of the card that would actually load up. It doesnt really capture the magic though.

I used to use my initials in the beginning in cyberspace but it turned out that those particular initials were far more common than I thought so I had to choose a cybername for myself and then, being terminally devoid of imagination,I looked to my favourite band,Tangerine Dream, for inspiration. One of my favourite TD albums is "Time Square" where there's a track called "Pixel Pirates". I thought that sounded snappy and distinctive, but being only one person I changed it from plural to singular.![](smileys/smiley1.gif)
As for the avatar I chose it from the ones available when I registered. There's a TD connection once again,of course ,in that that particular avatar is called "Wavelength" and there's a TD album by the same name. I thought it appropriate for that reason alone but I also thought that it looks quite a lot like a spectrum analyzer you often find on recording studio equalizers (I actually had one in my hifi at one point. Totally pointless in a home stereo system but it looked tremendously stylish and hypercool.I was still young enough to care about things like that then ) and since TD rely on advanced studioequipment slightly more than, say Bruce Springsteen,I thought that was an additional reason to use it.

Mine's not prog or literary related - or even related to anything particularly clever or funny.
I've always kept a stock of handles, or nicks, all of which have associated Yahoo.co.uk addresses. My first one was CitrixEngineer, which I used from about 1997 onwards, but decided it wasn't 1337 enough for some of the tech forums I used to hang out on.
Inspiration struck after I came back from my first Citrix exam (after swearing I would never do any of the shoddy industry certifications as my degree and practical skills were evidence enough of my prowess); I had to do the exam to get a pay rise - so I sold out...
When I got back from sitting the exam, and people in my office found out that I'd passed, for some reason they all found it very funny to say that I was now officially certified, and the nickname stuck until I changed jobs (for my next pay rise!).
The 1 came from the fact that the handle certified had already been chosen on Yahoo!, and, not losing heart, I thought it would be quite 1337 to celebrate my first certification with the number in my new nick...
I just like the Cyclops avatar, despite Danbo's line of questioning about one-eyed things...
Only kidding; Certif1ed comes from a very, very rare and amazing prog album, with music that goes way beyond anything that's ever been heard on this planet before. The lyrics are based on an epic poem by an obscure Transylvanian author called Dzzerkl Vergotnegbotendruckersch%tz about a race of beings from the future who discover time travel and only discover on arrival that, due to evolutionary shrinkage, the entire population of 345,000,000,000,000,000,000 fit quite comfortably in the space previously occupied by a hydrogen atom.
The hydrogen atom, forced out of it's spatial location so abrubtly, promptly reacted by exploding. On this scale, of course, it was the equivalent of 5345897.34 Hiroshimas.
The avatar is, in fact, a picture of one of these tiny beings.

This IS a great thread. Now I wish I had been more creative, but I just wanted to get started quickly. I chose a default avatar and wil probably come up with something better down the road.
My nickname is just my name without the "d". My name is actually Raymond but I go by Ray. 7174 to me defines the heyday of prog rock, and rock for that matter. It also happens to be the pinnacle of Yes' brilliance, IMHO of course.
I thought I would change my nickname to something more creative at some point in the future, but I am yet to find where you can modify your username.

"Easy livin" has been my favourite track by Uriah Heep (my favourite band) from their album "Demons and wizards"(my favourite album) since it was released in the very early 70's. An Easy living is also something I'll do anything for!
My avatar is of course Jethro Tull's best album, and one of the finest prog albums ever made. I just felt "Thick as a brick" was sort of appropriate!

Rob the Plant because I love their music, and my favorite of the group is Robert Plant. The

I chose penguindf12 as my e-mail screenname when I was 12 years old (hence the "12"), and my initials are D.F. (Dex F. [I refuse to give my last name! --but you may know it anyway]). And when I was 12, my favorite animal was the penguin. A cool critter to be sure.
Maybe if I get a band, I'll be the bassist and instead of being "the fish" (Chris Squire's nickname), I'll be "the penguin" and wear a tux and top hat every time. Okay, maybe not the top hat. Slash might sue.

My brother used to call me Baby-Makko when i was young (my name's Markus) and i wanted to use that name online, but make it look different. So it became Bebie-Makko, and then BebieM. ![](smileys/smiley2.gif)

Well, my name's taken from one of the silliest and most hilarious songs
ever recorded - Trouser Press by the Bonzo Dog Band. It is NOT a reference to the music mag (though apparently they derived their name from the exact same song!).
As for me avatar... Well the surreal and the bizarre is my bag in all
forms of art and expression, be that music, comedy, theatre or fine art
so it seemed only right to pick a well-known painting by one of my
favourite Surrealists of all time - the magnificent Rene Magritte!

Bonzo Dog Band's Keynsham is one of the albums I asked for for Christmas. I kind of did it as a risk, not knowing anything about them. Are they good? And also, you mentioned surreal comedy. The Office is a great show, try that out.

Hmmmm well, their songs are very jokingly done so it's hard to say what
music style they even are. I'll have to think about that one.

The Bonzos are unique... plain and simple. One can compare them to
Monty Python's songs, but that's mainly because one of the founders
worked with the Pythons a lot when recording them! As for Keynsham -
it's good but it's not their best. It;s their most serious recording,
and shows them at a more fragmented stage - Viv Stanshall creating his
lunatic ditties, and Neil Innes writing more sober, thoughtful songs,
but it still holds together and has some great tracks on it (being a
Viv fan more than a Neil fan my favourites are "Sport" and "Tent").
If you're interested in hearing the pinnacle of humourous music then
you might as well get the whole lot on a VERY reasonably priced 3-disc
set called "Cornology". I'd say it's worth fifteen quid from anyone!
Oh and of course I know the Office! Humour is my LIFE! It's my main
passion (even more than prog) and I'm already working towards getting
my name known in the field (I'm 18... so there's no rush yet ).
I wouldn't in a million years call the Office surreal though. Monty
Python's Flying Circus, Spike Milligan, Viv Stanshall, Simon Munnery,
Big Train... they're surreal. Not the Office though - the reason it
works is that it's so true to life. If you like the Office then I'm
afraid you just missed a brilliant series on Channel 4 called "Peep
Show" with a similar (more vicious) streak of embarassment comedy...
But yeah, I'm rambling. *shuts up*

I have to say this is one of the best threads I have seen for many a moon on the Forum - and one that humbles me for being so lazy in the early days as not to choose a better handle for myself.....
Jim Garten - what can I say? That's my name - nothing interesting there, so here's a bit of family history: note the spelling of the surname - Garton is a common surname in the UK, but I believe all the Gartens in the UK are related; as I understand it from family history, we came over from north Germany around 1912, were interned during WWI, and stuck in reserved occupations during WWII (because the Brits still didn't trust us damned Bosch!).
The avatar I refer to as the inverted codpiece from hell - again, no imagination at the beginning, so just used one of the stock ones; I don't have the know-how to be able to get a fancy one......I want a moving avatar like Danbo !!

Syzygy is a word that once got me a truly remarkable score in a game of Scrabble (sad but true). The final 'y' was on the bottom right hand corner triple word score, and it connected to the word 'thirst' going down. OK, so one of the y's was a blank, and a 7 letter word would have got me a 50 point bonus, but it's not every day you get to use a 6 letter vowel free word, and even rarer for it to land on a triple word score.
The avatar comes from Harry Enfield's brilliant send up of the stereotypical Scouser - I should add at this point that I am guilty of being Liverpudlian, but no one has ever called me a Scouser (at least, not to my face). If it hadn't been for a certain Manc's poking fun at my native city (aided by a Swede with an oddly English sense of humour) it would probably be something prog related.
