Who is the better ensemble from these two titans of modern virtuosity? After you decide Id like some commentary on which one is more progressive. I personnaly think the sonic texures and innovative vocals of AATC make them a little more prog; also the fact that composition-wise they are light years ahead of their contemporaries. Any other insight would be appreciated. Discuss.....................

Alvin and The chipmunks are very close to early tape manipulation, that makes them equal to other experimental acts, such as Brian Eno, Art Bears, This Heat, etc. DT is quite more simple than that, just the studio manipulation to make their instrumental exceses more noticeable. AATC wins...

No contest. They were the first rodent band. You just don't get more progressive than that.

cuncuna:

Actually, you are closer to the truth than you know.  And everyone will love this story.

Some of you may know that I spent about 10 years as a part-time assistant to Les Paul, with whom I remain friends.  During that time, Les told me quite a number of amazing anecdotes of his life.  Note that he has no reason to lie (given how much he actually did - including inventing the solid-body electric guitar, multi-track recording, an early disc-cutting lathe, and various guitar effects), but all of his stories have been corroborated by others.

Anyway...

Because of who he was (and still is!), all sorts of people were in awe of Les, and used to visit him at his home in Mahwah, NJ just to speak with him.  In the late 50s, a young man came to see him.  Les was working on a new recording of him and Mary (Ford, his wife), on which Mary had multitracked some vocals.  Les was eager to play it for the young man, and he turned on the tape recorder.  Except that he forgot to put it on the correct speed.  So the tape played faster than it should have, making Mary's vocals soiund very high-pitched.  Les quickly caught it, and turned it back to the correct speed.  However, the young man asked if he would play it again at the faster speed.  Les did, and the young man asked if he could use that sound for a project he was working on.  Les, who had no interest in that "sound," said yes.

Of course, that young man was Dave Seville, and the project he was working on was Alvin & The Chipmunks.  Thus, Les Paul even had a hand in the development of one of the 60s most famous and lovable groups!

Peace.

Pinky and Perky, when were they around?  Who was first: Pinky and Perky, or Alvin and the Chipmunks?

Pinky and Perky was a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_television_series - Children's television series first seen on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC - BBC in the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960s - 1960s . Pinky and Perky spoke and sang in high-pitched voices and would often sing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_version - cover versions of popular songs. They also performed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comedy - comedy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sketch_comedy - sketches usually with a human foil (similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_Brush - Basil Brush ).

The show also included other puppets, including The Beakles — an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird - avian parody of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles - The Beatles .

Good stuff!

Well The Chipmunks did indeed come first, way back in 1958, with "The Witch Doctor".

I still enjoyed Pink and Perky though!
