| alrite, im a huge tool fan, and was wondering if anyone in here knew of some stuff that i would enjoy that has a similar style or complexity. any help would be greatly appreciated |

mmm...nop, Tool are pretty unique... But maybe you will like King Crimson if you havent heard them before that is...Maynard once said "King Crimson is the band we have been repping off all this years"  ------------- "You want me to play what, Robert?"

Indukti. Another Polish band. They have Mariusz Duda of Riverside guesting on two tracks as vocalist. Quite a bit different to Tool, but they're a cross between King Crimson and Tool, with their own unique sound. They also use harp (of the stringed variety) and didgeridoo. The drumming is very Tool-like though. The violin parts remind me of King Crimson's David Cross at times also, very good. They've only released the one album: S.U.S.A.R. and that was released on The Laser's Edge label (Riverside also share the same label for their debut, but their second album is on InsideOut Records). I actually prefer them over Tool. -------------

Seems Dead Soul Tribe has already been mentioned. A Perfect Circle is said to sound similar to Tool (Maynard sings), but A Perfect Circle doesn't have the conceptual sophistication and ambient segues mapped out to perfection like Tool does. -------------

Although I don't really see the similarities, but have heard talk/comparisons from varied sources...I'd give Neurosis, Isis, Katatonia, Oceansize, and Dead Soul Tribe a try. |

Well, the most tool-like album would be their latest, "The Power to Believe," although it's far from their best IMO. I prefer "Lizard," Islands," and "Larks." Well...In the court of the Crimson King is the best album on the face of the earth...but there you wont find anything like Tool... I´d say try Thrak and the Power to believe!!! This last one is amazing!!! KC actually toured with Tool in the presentation of this album...or was it The Cosntruction of light? ------------- "You want me to play what, Robert?"

I reccomend listening to Red. This was probably the King Crimson album that influenced Tool the most, as well as several other prog-metal bands like Primus (definitely check out Primus too). Discipline is another album that had an enourmous influence on prog metal bands of the 90s.
If you like the epic prog side of Tool, you'll probably like a majority of the bands on the top 100 albums list of this site.

I've got the first APC album, and, while it is undeniably very good, I'm afraid it does not do much for me. The problem might be that's a bit too samey, and after a while it becomes heavy going. What I've heard of Tool so far is much more intriguing. |

Tool are not even in the same ball park as King Crimson .. that Maynard character sure has some delusions King Crimson appeal to people who know about music, Tool appeal to people who don`t !!

Well, just because Tool is more popular doesn't mean it appeals solely to people who don't. Obviously more popular bands will appeal to a broader range of people including many who don't know much about music. But Tool is very complex rhythmically, and some of the conceptual ideas are also quite interesting. But I must admit, melodically, Tool is lacking. But I find that to be the case in most rock bands today. Great rhythms, but the melodies are usually very simple, and almost always in a minor key. This goes for Tool as well, although Maynard's singing makes it sound better than most bands.
That being said King Crimson was never very melodic either, except perhaps on the earlier albums. The also focused a lot more on rhythm. But Fripp can come up with the craziest in your face guitar lines that don't adhere to any scale whatsoever, so that complexity more than makes up for it.

Hi Folks,
A new american band called 10 YEARS based in Knoxville, TN, have some similarities with Tool. They released an album called Autumn Effect and is pretty cool. Try to hear this band. Jesse Hasek is the vocals and he is very good. And I think 10 Years could be here in PA.

Decent band,but the similarities to Tool end with 10 Years vocalist resembling MJK.If anything they sound like A Perfect Circle. And neither 10 Years or APC should be included in the archives,they aren't prog or prog metal.Just heavy,sometimes dark alt rock. -------------  |

Dead Soul Tribe is very Tool sounding, in my opinion. Plus as everyone else has mentioned, recent King Crimson albums are in a similar vein as Tool's music. -------------
