Who do you think is better and why? Right now i have a healthy obsession with Josh Garza the drummer of The Secret Machines, so i'm bias. I do think they sound similar. For Josh and Secret machine fans here is a link to a interview with Josh: http://www.mtvu.com/music/the_hot_seat/ -

Not familiar with Grandaddy, but I've been following TSM for a few years.  Started with their first EP, September000, and been a huge fan since.  I take it Grandaddy's of a similar style to TSM?

^ Same here.  TSM are a wonderful new band.  Never heard of Grandaddy.

I really like the first Secret Machines album because of the Krautrocky feel to most of the tracks. The tracks I'm not really fond of are in more of a later Mercury Rev style but not as good. Unfortunately this seems to be the road they've decided to go down on Ten Silver Drops so it doesn't really float my boat.

I've only heard one Grandaddy song (can't remember its name) and the keyboard line was so annoying that it put me off wanting to hear any more. If I remember correctly, the video for the song involved a log cabin flying through space.

You're thinking of "Crystal Lake" off the "Sophtware Slump" album.

I seem to be opposite to most people I've never heard of The Secret Machines, but Grandaddy, yes "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot" is a prog classic (even though they aren't strictly a prog group).
