there is a Kobaian dictionary in the web, though there are not many entries in it: http://www2.noisecore.com:81/magma/dictionary.html - http://www2.noisecore.com:81/magma/dictionary.html . but it is a start at least

Kobaïan was, as I understand it, never actually spoken. From what I have heard, in most cases, Vander worked backwards, writing "lyrics" first, only then grafting meaning onto the words. -------------

I seem to remember posting about this before, but ...
Kobaian is essentially a phonetic language which was developed by Christian with help from Klaus Blasquiz solely for Magma to sing in. This means that the vocabulary is a tad limited - I once asked Chris Cutler about it (not that I'm one to drop names) and he told me that there are many ways to say 'Die accursed race of Earthmen!' but no way to say 'Let's go for a drink'. He also said that he had heard Christian and Klaus speaking in Kobaian once or twice.
Parts of it are more or less phonetic transcriptions of French - for example, the famous 'Ima suri Dondai' from MDK translates as 'The angel of light smiled at me'. If Dondai (in this context) is the angel of light, then 'Ima suri' is the same as 'Il m'a souri', the French for 'he smiled at me'.
I really need to get out more - at least that's what they say at my local 'Get A Life' club.

According to BaldJean's site, "Ima Suri Dondai" means "I've seen the
Angel of Light"... but I'm sure you're more accurate, since you're the
Zeuhl specialist...

I actually figured out my translation from the US vinyl version of MDK, which contained the full libretto plus an English narrative. I don't think that Kobaian has any grammar, so the phrase could have either meaning depending on the context. The explanation on the cover of MDK gives the followers of the prophet Nebber Guddhat (not quite sure about the spelling of his name at the moment and too lazy to look it up) as saying "I've seen the Angel of Light, and He smiled at me". I have no idea where the Korean dictionary site has the information from, but it seems possible there is a mix-up there. -------------  BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue. |
