Easilly neo prog much more empassioned, better arrangements, better melodies. Just better in every way i can think of.

Prog-metal. It's a genre that's actually evolved over the last decade, whereas all too many neo-prog simply imitate thirty year old albums on a much more simplistic and pop-ish level.

I prefer neo-prog, specially IQ and Marillion, I enjoy them more than any prog-metal band, but I admit that prog-metal is more varied. Neo-prog bands sound all very similar, while prog-metal sounds very diifferent if you listen to Dream Theater or Opeth or Riverside or Tool or Pain Of Salvation... all of them own their distinctive sound, so I generally find more exciting to discover new prog-metal bands than to discover new neo-prog bands.

Interesting post... I admit I haven't really listened to very much Neo Prog but that's the general impression I get from peoples descriptions of the genra. BTW in which direction did you throw your vote???
I won't vote since I hadn't listened to enough Neo Prog butI've been a fan of Prog Metal for years now.

Love them both. Actually I think there's a large overlap between the genres, Arena and Riverside come to mind.

'Neo Prog' for me. Bands like Pendragon, Pallas, IQ and Marillion may not exactly push boundaries but I love their music. I think the above bands inject enough of their own charisma to stop being labelled derivative. It's more in keeping with the symphonic sounds of the 70s I love so much, and personally, I think 'neo prog' has better songwriting, or at least, a type of songwriting I prefer.

I dont agree with that at all, there are clear differences between the big four bands (Pendragon, Marillion, IQ, and Arena) and you will find the same if you dig deeper into the genre, though you are als likely to find some blatent copiests as well, but what genre arnt you.
I voted for both.

Well. I have the compete discographies of Pendragon, Marillion, IQ and Arena, and also some more (Collage, Satellite, Fish solo albums, Pallas, Shadowland, Jadis...) and of course I know they are not simple copies of each other, but they all have a similar sound (soft and melodic voices, melodic and soaring guitar solos, a lot of keyboard atmospheres, certain 80's feel...), and that's why anyone can recognize a neo-prog album. although inside that type of sound there are differences betwen them, for example Arena are harder, IQ are darker and so on.
But prog-metal is not so well defined, it's just a genre with metal and progressive elements, and you can find many different approaches to that mix. It's evident that i.e. Tool and Dream Theater have nothing to do with each other, but take any two neo-prog bands and you'll see much more similarities.
A recent example for me: This week I have discovered Pain Of Salvation (I purchased Remedy Lane) and I found out that their style is completely different from Dream Theater. They are both metal and they are both prog but they don't play the same style of music really.
So IMO prog-metal is potentially more surprising for me than neo-prog. Anyway I like both.

In that case you should try Saens, they sound absolutely nothing like other Neo bands, very cool group.

Prog-Metal... although I've been welcomed in the prog rock world via neo-prog (i.e. marillion), I still think that a lot of prog metal is more daring and explorative than neo prog... (although there seems to be a tendency to be more heavy as a neo-prog band in recent times)

Neo prog (except for Marillion and IQ) is not very interesting...but there are some prog metal band like Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree or Threshold that are the best nowadays...

Prog-metal is my favourite.
It's not that I don't like Neo-prog, but it's one of the many subgenres
I have to look into more often. I know there are neo-prog bands that I
would like, but currently there are too much cool prog-metal bands I
don't know yet, and I want to get to know them better first.
