Hello progheads.

A book entitled Hit Dossier 1939-1994 (Holland) was my inspiration to this thread because I am very curious to your opinion which progrock single is your most appreciated one?
Between brackets I have named the highest chart position and number of weeks in the Duch Top 40. Remarkable is the success of Dutch progrock bands like Earth Of Fire with Memories: #1 and 14 weeks in the charts and Ekseption with Air #2 and 16 weeks in the charts!
Best foreign acts are Owner Of A Lonely Heart by Yes (#2/9 weeks) and Pink Floyd with Another Brick In The Wall (#3/11 weeks).

So what's your most appreciated progrock single and what can you say about it?
By the way, multiple votes are allowed in this poll (I voted Deep Purple with Child In Time).

Not crazy about any of the songs except for Love is the Drug, and I can't believe anyone would call that a prog song?

Maybe PFM Celebration, but there's about 20 PFM songs I like more.

Didn't Supersister ever chart with She Was Naked or Radio? The former is a perfect, quirky and cathy progpop/rock single.

I voted for Child in Time (For the musicianship) and Dust in the wind (For a song that trancended all the charts, be it  pop, country, rock etc.
Dust in the wind is a timeless classic and will probably be remembered by most in fifty years time.

Right Rocktopus, Supersister with She Was Naked reached #11 and remained 7 weeks in the Dutch Top 40 charts!

I love the song Lady from Styx.

As many singles mentioned in your poll, once I loved them (Follow you, follow me or Kayleigh or Owner of a Lonely heart) but now the songs do not inspire me anymore.
The only reasons for prog bands to make singles are money and to communicate to the public that a new album is out.

What about Bohemian Rhapsody?
Also Styx-Babe?

I was thinking about an inclusion of I Know What I Like by Genesis, when this single was released in the UK it reached a #17 position but I read stories that this could have been higher, due to logistic problems in the record stores this went wrong?

I have given the opportunity 'Others' so everybody is free to mention songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, Babe, ...

Zappa's Bobby Brown was # 1. for eleven weeks in Norway in '79! LOL
(Mars Volta album Frances the Mute # 1 here in January '05 is also pretty unbelivable)

it must have never made/ or most likely not released as a single for the Dutch charts.... sort of a hard one to overlook if it did make the charts.

Marillion's "You're Gone" from Marbles. Everything from the lush keyboards, atmospheric guitar work, to H's heartwrenching lyrics and vocals makes it one of my favorite Marillion tunes. I never tire of this one.

My top prog singles would be:

Northern Lights - Renaissance: The vocal melody is unforgettable, and beautiful.

Turn it on Again - Genesis: I love the riff played by the paino and guitar, and the fact that it combines some prog trademarks with an accessable RnB feel.

Kayleigh - Marillion: Lyrically a great song, with a superb perfomance from Steve Rothery. This put prog near the top of the chrts where it belonged.

Joybringer - Manfred Manns Earth Band: A joyfull take on Holsts Jupiter.

The problem with setting up a poll like this is that you have to make choices, you can't please everybody. In fact I intended only to include my own favorite progrock singles but I have chosen for a broader set up. Genesis was the hardest choice, also because Follow You, Follow Me Angry is in the list .. On one hand I regret excluding I Know What I Like but on the other hand I am glad that I have included Cat Food by King Crimson because of the funny reactions Thumbs Up ! And it's really fun to read all reactions because it's so subjective, every proghead has its own taste, memories or motivation Ermm ..

Oh, Northern Lights - Renaissance. A beautiful song.

Surely you italians must have had some prog hit singles?

Banco: Non me Rompete,
Le Orme:  Il Proformo delle Viole, Regina al Troubadour,
De DE Lind - Mille Anni (fantastic single)
Franco Battiato - Energia,
PFM - La Carrozza di Hans, E Festa,

Were any of these songs big hits?

'I Know What I Like' and 'Catfood' for me

Wasn't 'Stick It Out' by Rush a single too... Probably didn't make a hit though if it was.

I'd personally add "MAMA" by the dwarf-fronted Genesis...
I love that songs for its slightly sinister atmosphere and for the wicked sounds that Phil emits...

I agree. Mama was the first song that ever made me sit up and pay attention to Genesis. I quite like the Genesis album too. Better than ABACAB, Invisible Touch and We Cant Dance IMO.

Hello Bern.
When I am home from my work, I will have a look at Hocus Pocus as a Focus single Wink !

Where are the Dutchmen to support Earth & Fire and Ekseption Confused ?
And I am surprised about the current #1, Roxy Music with Love Is The Drug Embarrassed !

That's the kind of surprises you get when you allow multiple votes.

Hocus Pocus by Focus reached two times the Dutch charts:

1971: #10 and 9 weeks
1973: # 9 and 7 weeks

Unfortunately Spirit Of The Radio by Rush had no ranking in Holland.

Child in Time - one of the GREAT rock songs of all time.

I love the song Kayleigh of Marillion too. But I simply HATE the single the record company brought out in the Netherlands. It cuts out the guitar solo of Rothery at about 2 minutes in the song. That destroys an otherwise perfect Marillion song!

Earth & Fire with Memories has made an enormous leap to the #1 position, due to the multiple choice possibility?
