I think Beefheart is very progressive and would like to see him on this site.  He has a bluesy voice with some other types of music thrown in. He was a friend of Frank Zappa. His music has strange features like constantly shifting time signatures, random talking, strange voices etc.  Trout mask replica is very prog in my opinion and is very challenging.

Challenging is a good word for it. I have never been able to get past his bizarre voice.

Prog or not....actually I say if progarchives decides to include him....then Yes!

otherwise no......

how's that for fencesitting?

you should try Safe As Milk. It's a little more commercial but still very good.

what genre of prog would he be in if he were to be included?

I only ever see TMR at the record stores here. Captain Beefheart is not someone I would order on the internet or even at a record store..I would just have to buy it on a whim. Right now there are so many different bands to explore....
