Hello football fans.

Dutch football coach Marco Van Basten his definitive line-up for the friendly game against Cameroon next Saturday features an amazing line-up:

keeper:
- v/d Sar (Man United)
defence:
- Kromkamp (Liverpool, winner FA Cup)
- Ooijer (PSV, Dutch champion)
- Mathijsen (AZ)
- Van Bronckhorst (Barcelona, Spanish champion and winner Champions League)
midfield:
- Van Bommel (Barcelona, Spanish champion and winner Champions League)
- Cocu (PSV, Dutch champion)
- vd Vaart (Hamburger SV)
forward players:
- Van Persie (Arsenal)
- Van Nistelrooij (Man United)
- Robben (Chelsea, #1 Premier League)

If this line-up turns out to be the final line-up for our first World Cup game against Serbia (June 11th, 1500 AM) in Germany, we have to show the world that 'third time is lucky' (after the lost finals in 1974 and 1974)!

Personally I hope that Van Persie (who dare to blame Wenger that he should have used Bergkamp as a subsitue in the Champions League finale against Barcelona) will show his outstanding skills (watch his free kicks) and Van Der Vaart his incredible passing and shooting!

Two biggest problems I can see Erik are age and discipline.
I hope they do well though, they play the beautiful game......Ruud Gullit called it "sexy football"

Yeh, their in it, their Englands third(?) game.

Speaking of England, the team is looking pretty strong, except for the strikers (two crocks, a lanky guy who never scores and an unproven 17 year oldDisapprove).

You mean Peter Crouch?

Is it:

Owen

Rooney
The Unknown dude?

Does Sweden have Ibrahimovic and Muslimovic?

And returning to the topic, Yes, Holland has a great team!

No, Downing was heard of, and is a midfielder.
The unknown dude is Theo Walcott, who's never even played a premiership match since moving to Arsenal.

In my opinion Peter Crouch is very talented (he has a good technique for such a tall player) but can he handle the pressure? This season he has made important goals but also missed many chances. I hope Wayne Rooney will recover fromhis injury!

Ibrahimovic showed his great skills not only  in the Dutch competion but also in Italy. The problem about him is that he is so inpredictable, he alternates between a weirdo and a genius Confused ...

About the sexy football, Tony R, you mean "wearing suspenders and a bra ..Wink " ..

Holland are like England and Spain. They sound good on paper but always underperform when the pressure's on.

I'm not sure that is necessarily true Bob. I think there have always been issues in the Dutch camp, persoanlities causing friction. The squad dynamic is very destructive.

Out of the group games but he might play in the final.

Amazing isn't it that in the whole of England, there are only two decent strikers and both of them are injured.

I expect some defensive games for England, particularly with Erikkson still in charge.

Mind you, the defensive game might just win it - it worked for Greece anyway!

Great optimism with the "but he might play in the final " Bob,but dont you think that England needs players of subtlety, such as Rooney, to progress anywhere near the final?

You're thinking of Theo Walcott -- Aaron Lennon is only 19 but is a nippy little winger who will give defences a headache if he plays -- he'll have to dislodge Beckham first though.

Don't forget that, when England won in '66, our best forward then (Jimmy Greaves) was injured early and never got back in the team. Geoff Hurst was relatively unknown before the finals.

Well, I'm looking forward to the upcoming World Cup for sure!
The pressure's really on for our side, but I still can't stand the thought that our nation's pride, KJ Huntelaar has not been selected, but a player like Vennegoor of Hesselink IS!

Ah well, let's just hope Van Nistelrooy is willing enough to prove to the world that he's still one of the best! And besides that, let's hope Brazil get knocked out early by some unknown teams... I like their skills, and the way they play, but come on! Let's have another winner for once! Smile

Since this thread started with a Dutch theme......why are the Dutch such a paradoxical nation? Such nice people, such a relaxed & grown up way of life, so friendly to visitors. They speak better English than us Brits and seem to have a good sense of proportion in discussion.

Then give 'em a football, and all changes.......they have (arguably) the worst thugs in the game........on & off the field.........Bergkamp is probably the dirtiest player I've ever seen - so sly & with a "butter wouldn't melt in his mouth" look that he invariably gets away with it - except that there is plenty of tv footage to show what he's really like. "Spitter" Rijkard - nasty piece of work. Then that full back who, 10 years ago, nearly cut Denis Irwin in half playing for Feyenoord vs Man Utd - one of the worse tackles I've ever seen. Koeman - a man who would have been at home in the SS (offensive, yes; but did you ever see him play ? One of the most cynical of all time.)

Sincerely, the Dutch are, alongside the Danes, probably the nicest people in Europe. But I can't wait to see what the current generation gets up to in Germany.

And, for the record, England have no chance - with or without Rooney - it's both hilarious & cringeworthy to see the parade of old pros on tv saying that we should make the semis "at least". We'll be lucky to qualify from our group, since we'll lose to the Swedes (who are always strong & have a very consistent record in the big competitions) & have a lucky draw against at least one of the "minnows" in our group.

My tip ? Italy or Spain - such good Spanish players, as always - they can't always be unlucky........

I have visited many games when Dennis Bergkamp played for Ajax and I have enjoyed so many great moments but Dennis 'Non-Flying Dutchman' Bergkamp has also a dark side, he has commited some very mean foules during his period in London with Arsenal like kicking somebody when he was lying on the ground!

By the way, I am on my work, it's a few hundred meters from the Feijenoord Stadium in Rotterdam and I just heard a jubilous roar, indeed Holland leads with 1-0 against Cameroon halfway the first half, it was Van The man who scored Thumbs Up !

Ruud Van Nistelrooij is a real winner like Lothar Mattheus, they do everyting (positive and negative) to win so he dives, he provokes, he makes mean foules but he also makes many (important) goals so Man United and Holland fans tend to forgive him when he helps us to win important games!

I just don't like him.  It's because of the Manchester United connection I think.  I don't like any Manchester United players!

Dutch coach Marco Van Basten wanted to play against an African team (yesterday Cameroon) and a Latin-American team (as Memowakeman mentioned his country Mexico) in order to test our national team how to play against a physical strong team like Cameroon and a defensive (read: sneaky Wink ) team like Mexico ( I suppose so, I have not seen Mexico playing for a year). So we are trying to build our a bit un experienced team, yesterday we had a great first half, very dominant with forchecking that reminded me of the legendary 1974 Dutch team (Cruijff, Neeskens, Van Hanegem) so their is hope in the Dutch football hearts Big smile ...!!

Well, I haven't seen the '74 matches in complete, but yesterday's first half was something to be positive about. Awful team though, Cameroon. It looked like they were getting paid to injure someone on Holland's side... Thank god they didn't.
And everybody is talking about the fact that Holland might be lacking experience, but when you start with players like Van der Sar, Van Nistelrooy, Van Bommel... I think the cap average was about 25 yesterday, with only 3 or 4 players who have played 10 or less games for the national team. So that fact doesn't concern me a bit. Smile

Yeah, I know, they all do it - but we're supposed to pretend they're all saints (just like we're supposed to pretend we, the spectators, don't enjoy red cards Cool ).

Not good for England, Rooney might not even play AT ALL. I think England would be smart to call up Andrew Johnson.

 Anyways: Germany versus Costa Rica....

You know the result of that before it even began...

I wasnt expecting Rooney to be fit proper for the world cup after I heard he broke his foot, they dont heal in just four weeks. Luckaly the Midfield and defence is looking pretty strong.

I think I'll skip the opening match, doesnt sound like a good one.

It would have been great to see how he would have dealt with teams like Brazil. Owen and Crouch should be an interesting partnership up front.

Owen and Crouch, great idea to post the smallest and the tallest in front LOL .. must be quite confusing for the defenders!

He's already a star.

Yea... I wonder why they even brought up Peter Crouch, maybe for the usual English attacking combo! Wink (Heading the ball to striker)

Strange thing is, though, that despite his height, Crouch ain't particularly good in the air; whereas the midget Owen is. Sadly, though, overall Owen's very overrated; his first touch is awful, like bouncing a powerball (remember them ?) on a concrete floor........our entire forward line is a joke, and I wouldn't be surprised if we fail to score a single goal in Germany - if the bookies are giving decent odds on that, I'd advise a mild flutter.........

Watch out Tony because I am sure that Van Persie still hosts some bad habits when it doesn't work out as he likes, despite the good advises from Bergkamp and Van Basten. I won't be surprised if he does silly things again ... Unhappy .. Let's hope I am wrong!
By the way, yesterday I spoke with a guy who has played with the youngster Van Persie in Excelsior Maassluis (near Rotterdam), Van Persie was a very introvert boy who only wants to play football and who trained every minute with the ball.

Not unless they put in Andrew Johnson in place of Rooney! Wink

I was very surprised they didn't pick Bent at all, not even as a wait-list. He scored 18 goals this year for a rather hopeless Charlton team. He could be great for England.

Holland Under 21 has reached the semi-finals. OK, they were lucky but the Italians shuld be ashamed because of their awful defensive attitude Thumbs Down ..

Now it is France-Holland!

Good news for the commentators........bad news for us armchair watchers with schoolboy humour............Van der Vaart is injured.....although not definitely out.......one of the joys of multinational competition is hearing what vocal gymnastics the John Motsons of this world go through in order to balance authentic pronunciation with not saying homophones of rude words.........

I think he's still going on Sky, which I'm sure you can get in Holland........if you must.......personally, I avoid giving money to the Murdoch Empire whenever possible.......But there's a picture of one of our very own proggers on the Rogues Gallery thread that may suggest the influence of some Hill genes........need I name names ?!..........Clue: he's posted on this very thread not so long ago......Wink Big smile

Perhaps Sleeper Wink ?
Anyway, In Holland we have Sky on the satellite, I don't want to pay extra for all those networks because we are mighty closing the USA looking at our 'TV watching habits' .. Unhappy !

Well, about that penalty in the first half during the game England-Hungary: Drogba, Robben and Van Nistelrooij have taught the England players in the Premier League how to dive Angry in order to force a penalty Wink ..

I just watched that Japan took a 2-0 lead against Germany, if Germany looses Beckenbauer and Bild Zeitung will slam 'Die Mannschaft':

Its just a friendly, plus they should start Kahn ahead of Lehmann

I'm not sure Gerrard needs tuition in diving.......he does, after all, play for Liverpool......

Japan 2-0 up against Germany? Superb! Wonder if Klinsmann bothered to turn up, or did he stay at home in the US again?

Im very disappointed with that dive by Gerrard...the penalty save was justice served.
Wonder goal by Hungary from outside the box was the only way they were going to score although Hargreave's closing down was non-existant.
Joe Cole and David Beckham were England's best players and I still worried by Owen's lack of fitness.
I'm still not convinced by Lampard as an England player yet.Maybe the World Cup proper will see him grow...

Good to see a picture from Jimmy Hill here Thumbs Up !

Yes Tony R, Beckam and Cole were the best players and Crouch did also well as a sub. Remarkable was how many times the commentators mentioned the importance of Wayne Rooney ("he can create something out of nothing")!

Rooney is by far England's key player on this team, if he doesn't play, England will be screwed... But remember, England lost their best striker in 66

Funnily enough, there has been the odd TV programme (or ninety) in the past couple of weeks about the World Cup...........especially the '66 one...Wink

And, to be precise, we didn't "lose" - Greaves (for I presume it is he whom you mean - ?) - he was briefly injured, then dropped (or at least not reinstated) Smile But I'm only hairsplitting, sorry.

Nevertheless, do you genuinely believe England can win the World Cup, with or without Rooney? I have to say, I'm extremely sceptical........and, after Gerrard's blatant cheating against Hungary, and Ericksson's implicit condoning thereof, I have to say I shan't be supporting them.........

I dont know about wining the world cup, but weve got a good chance to get some distance this time.

And yes, that was a terrable dive from gerrard, but I've seen much worse from others.

I just watched Italy against Switzerland, just another unsportive performance by Italy (after Juventus against Arsenal in the Champions league), what an awful fouls made by De Rossi and again Gattuso Angry, that man belongs in prison!
What to expect from a team that is chased by the scandal about bribery of players and refs Confused ? Will this boost the coherence and friendship or will this evoke more agressiveness?

Yes, an interesting game, just watch Wesley Schnijder, he is a substitute for Raphael Van Der Vaart (ankle injury) but in my opinion he is one of the most talented youngsters, so dynamic, lots of pace and he can shoot Thumbs Up , 3-1 is my prophecy!

What team do you think will Win?

Right now, I've narrowed it down to 5 teams....

Brazil, England, France, Germany or the Czech Republic...

Even though the Germans are mighty weak this time.
