Hi! I have a question. Why did they sing about gypsies in the 70-s? I can recall Uriah Heep, Manfred Mann (a Springsteen's song), Black Sabbbath...Smile Some kinda fashion...

 Thanks

could possibly be some rules connected with today's political correctness - you were allowed to write songs about ethnic minorities in those days!Wink

Went along with the themes of fantasy and magic in their songs.

Black Sabbath and Uriah Heeps Gypsy-songs are the best!

Were allowed? Smile Besides, it was just about them...

Still a lot of hippies living the gypsy life in those days - check out the movie Easy Rider, for the fictionalised image of these things, uprooting their tepees and  moving on in their magic buses. Something romantic about the nomadic life, without running water (other than the rain) nor electricity.

Well, there's "Gypsy Caravan" by The Doors, "The Gypsy" and "A Gypsy's Kiss" by Deep Purple... probably dozens of others too, but now I can't remember!

So there were some in the past. The tendency! Nowadays their tastes seem to be a bit different Wink

"The gypsy flies from coast to coast"
"And no one knows the gypsy's name"
"In all his deepest dreams the gypsy flies"
"Well, pick your gear and gypsy roll on"

All lines from from The Allman Brothers' "Melissa" from Eat a Peach (one of my favorite non-prog albums - Les Brers in A Minor and Mountain Jam are outstanding songs).

Because those were the days of the hippies. They sung about gypsies because the hippies looked at them as kindred spirits.  It's much more romantic to liken the hippy-culture to the gypsy-culture, and there are similarities.

Other people dubbed the hippies bums.

Nope. It's Spanish Caravan.

Gypsies evoke a world of freedom, passion and mystery, singing about that fitted perfect in those days!
