I think Maynard is one of the best songwriters today...in which album does he do the best work?
I have lateralus, and just got 10,000 days...and have not had the chance to read the lyrics yet...but the Lateralus lyrics where...excellent!!!

Should have included Undertow.  It's the only album I really like completely by Tool.

No song of theirs compares to Flood or 4 Degrees.

Lateralus, without a doubt. I like the "Over thinking, over analysing ..." bit in the title track, especially, in terms of lyrics (and music).

I believe his best work is in Lateralus. Undertow has great lyrics of course, just notice the way he descibes the experience of being sexually harassed by his father in Prison Sex or the really emotional lyrics of Sober. With aenima, lyrics tend to become a little bit more mysterious, more abstract I would say, but yet not as deep as the ones in Lateralus. I thinks it is not really possible for someone to understand exactly what the whole Lateralus lyrical background is about, but the lyrics do leave much space for assumptions, and even more give the chance to listeners to give their own meaning to the lyrics sometimes.

The lyrics in 10.000 days are much closer to Aenima or Undertow than Lateralus. They are great lyrics too, also deep and quite strange. But my choice is still Lateralus.

I suppose right now my choice is Lateralus. I'm not too knowledgeable of 10,000 Days' lyrics, and AEnima has way too much vulgar language for me to fully appreciate. Not to say they are bad lyrics, but that kind of language that often is a personal deterrent for me.

I'll go for Aenima.  Although it would have been nice to see Undertow on your list.  I may be showing my age here but I remember getting my copy of Undertow hot off the press and got to see the tour here in Australia as well.  Looking at the reviews and ratings Undertow seems to always be up the back somewhere.  Tool will always make its biggest impression the first time listen to them.

Its too soon for me to totaly absorb all 10000 Days lyrics but I find them so far to be more personal than his previous works.I therefore vote Aenima. His lyrics in APC's Thirteenth Step are beautiful too. It is nice to see there are a few who love Undertow which tends to be underrated for how good it is.

I really do love them all equally, but the dark humor in Aenima as well as Rosetta Stoned will always had a special place in me :)

Lateralus. I admire the depth he gave with such songs as "Parabol / Parabola," "Schism (if not musically, lyrically this song is amazing)," and "Lateralus." "The Patient," too, always moves me but needless to say, I've enjoyed the lyrics on Lateralus more than, say, Undertow or ÆNIMA.

Lateralus, mostly because of the songs The Grudge and Lateralus, but they are also good all around.  However AEnima has the single best song lyric-wise, Stinkfist.

I don`t think his lyrics are very good , Maybe if you are 15 years old they may seem good, but not for a mature person   Smile
