Does anyone else out there have a well-developed taste for the obscure??

I just discovered Jimbo's comments on the StarUltimately Obscure Danish 1970s band Burnin Red Ivanhoe - who are still active this summer in DK, and still as rip-roaring good as they were 35 years ago. They continue to blend the Extreme and the Acoustic in a subtle and humorous way - as do contemporary Finnish band Zetaboo, whom I hope Jimbo will be reviewing soon...

Any others from Sweden or Norway

Strictly speaking, Finland is not a part of Scandinavia... One Finnish contemporary band that I have high hopes of is Jeavestone. You can listen to whole their debut album from http://www.musex.fi - www.musex.fi . They'll be playing in Germany this summer, so maybe a bigger number of our forumists will be able to hear them.

For me, quintessential 'Scandanavian progressive' means "The Flower Kings" from Sweden.

I'm still trying to get into Samla Mammas Manna/Zamla/Von Zamla from Sweden.. these RIO bands are hard work, but I know that they're brilliant, just not resonating with me yet. Ouch

The essential Scandanavian prog bands are Anglagard, Anekdoten, Landberk, Morte Macabre, Paatos, Trettioariga Kriget, Flasket Brinner, Opeth, Asoka, Dungen and also Bo Hansson. Ragnarok are also an enjoyable listen.

They are great also, but all I've heard from them is their second album.

Nobody except myself on this site seems to have heard of Midnight Sun from Denmark. I have two of their albums from the early seventies which feature Roger Dean covers. Although a little more on the jazz side like Eilliff from Germany they do have their prog moments.

Thanks for your suggestions - and if we continue to include Finland in our Scandinavian trawl (and I live here so it's how I FEE Lit's a part!) there are some other very good bands operating here.

Try XL on Rockadillo Records (sometimes gigging with Pekka Pohjola) pure prog and great live - except they are now off the road!
And Rivendell - a good live act in Helsinki area (don't know their albums)

Posted By: tone
Date Posted: May 17 2006 at 15:54
I also endorse Danish greats from 1970s Midnight Sun - aslso known a short while as the Rainbow Band.

Great guitarwork fromm Peer Frost as I remember - often restrained, often explosive. A little like Ole Fick from Burnin Red Ivanhoe

Posted By: Trickster F.

Ulver - Perdition City, Blood Inside, Themes From William Blake's Heaven And Hell
In The Woods... - Omnio
Enslaved - Ruun
Paatos - Kallocain
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors, La Masquerade Infernale

Some Scandinavian prog masterpieces. Some of these albums are rooted in Metal, but I also recommend them to non-metal fans as well.

Great list. I'll just add Haikara (Finland) Tangled Edge and November.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot my favorite: Samla Mammas Manna. I know danish band Secret Oyster are considered to be feally good  jazz fusion prog, but I haven't heard them.

I think that scandinavian prog needs to have a subgenre like italian symph prog Big smile

They all have some mellowness and melodic-ness(?) in them. They also have wide range of styles too  like in Sweeden

if you want to hear something very original and great artistry you may want to try Samla Mammas Manna's Matlid or Snorungarnus Symfoni, they were doing something no one has been able to duplicate, or even get close to. truly one of the brilliant artists of the progworld!

I'm a fan of Par Lindh Project (criminally neglected round here). It would seem that Par Lindh is quite important in the Swedish prog scene along with Bo Hansson. Here is an interesting excerpt from a recent interview taken from PLP's website:

PM. Sweden has been the capital of symphonic rock in the world since Bo
Hansson and has produced many symphonic rock artists. How do you
interpret this phenomenon in Sweden? What does Sweden mean to
progressive artists?
It seems like there are wide and intricate networks among artists. Do
you think there are any competing factions within progressive rock?

Pär. When we started the Swedish Art Rock Society 1991 of which I was the
first chairman we helped create a new wawe of progressive music in Sweden
which then spread around the world. This wave of music became much greater
than we hoped for in our ¨Wildest Dreams¨ when we started it all. In the
beginning we all tried to help each other instead of competing. This sense
has sadly withered away to some extent I´m afraid

The whole interview is can be found on http://www.crimsonic.com/ - http://www.crimsonic.com/  under PLP and Interviews.

Allright, the Flower Kings may be progressive but, in my opinion, they lack soul and feeling. In other words, their 'too much of the best things in prog' make them sound contrived.

Anyone thought of early Savage Rose as being prog? This Danish act released great music, culminating with "Dødens Triumf" (Death's Triumph) which is very progressive. Worth considering inclusion in PA.

I posted something up on this topic a few days back, but for some unexplained reason it was moved to the "Non-Prog" thread Confused

Earlier this week, I heard a track by a couple of Swedish guys by the name of Sylvan & Bonamici. I'd heard that they do stuff in the style of Wind & Wuthering era Genesis, and managed to find an MP3 of one of their tracks, the 13 minute "Quest For The Last Virtue". It's a terrific track which I'm sure a lot of PA people will enjoy.

Unfortunately, its the only track by this band that I've managed to find. I don't think they've actually released a full CD yet, so finding more material may prove tricky.

If anyone knows any more about this band, or manages to find any more samples, I'd be grateful to hear from you! Smile

Finland has produced some great, yet very little known music:

As far as I noticed only one poster mentioned Wigwam and Tasavallan Presidentti, which are great!
No one mentioned a great neo-prog band that goes by the of Ageness, and luckily some ppl remembered Höyry-Kone too :-)

And how the heck is it possible that no one mentioned Kingston Wall? C'mon, they're like the greatest heavyrockprogpsych..whatever band that ever existed.

And of course it goes without saying that Flower Kings is a great act, too.
