I listened to "El Cielo" and "Catch Without Arms" by the band DREDG and I'm wondering if they wouldn't fit better under Prog Related. Regardless of their ambitious and sophomore concepts behind I find their music largely pop influenced. In some way they sound like a blend between A PERFECT CIRCLE, DEPECHEMODE and MUSE. Art Rock is where they belong. I don't hear a single shred of Depeche Mode influence in their music?!?!

Might be wrong with DM (long time ago that I listened to them)! But
anyway I keep to my impression that they sound pop-ish! I fail to
detect anything in their music that is able to compete in quality to
masterly records from bands like King Crimson, VDGG and Anekdoten to
put at least one modern one. For me it's a kinda sophisticated Emo
Pop-Rock not that far away from Muse (and they ARE under Prog Related
if I'm correct). I do not intend to disqualify them from being Prog.
Even if I would adore them I wouldn't care whether they're considered
as such are not (see my sig.). I'm just wondering whether the really
fit to the bulk of bands in this category. However I just realized that
the option "if you like this..you might like this as well..." does not
exist anymore. So maybe it really doesn't matter where they're put
under. This kinda music just doesn't do it for me what is not the case
with the majority of bands in this category, but maybe I'm the only one
here with this opinion. In future I'll just avoid and ignore similar
bands like them. Mike, "Progressive Alternative Rock" wouldn't be that bad idea since this kinda music (TMV for example) is more and more expanding!  I would prefer to have such stuff all in one "bag" (I mean not to discard after....however )!

We now use this within the umbrella of Prog or Progressive Rock as category that is used to refer to explorative works by bands that cross different genres or have an experimental nature that is not specific to one genre. Some of these bands may have had roots in other prog categories in their early years but later became more AOR or mainstream or vise versa starting out mainstream then becoming prog. These bands are considered primarily to be prog bands.I would concede that certain bands flirt with progressive concepts, then continue on a different course. I haven't heard Catch Without Arms yet, but the concensus seems to be that with that album, dredg is moving away from prog. That's why I personally don't see the harm in finding some way to highlight the progressive albums of an artist. It seems to me that this would solve many debates on this forum (i.e., Queen, Kansas, Styx, etc. would have their "proggy" albums clearly defined). ------------- Pure Brilliance:

Actually I don't mind who the voice is resembling to, whether DM or TFF (both are a pain for my ears). But I think it's mainly the singer that puts me off personally. But as well the music style reminds me too much to bands I don't like to listen to anymore. But thanks for the reminder for art rock definition, empathy! Nevertheless I agree that they might fit in there since they're clearly expanding the genre of alternative rock. ------------- To be prog or not to be, that's not the question! Sillyam Likesbeer |

They might be weird sometimes, nevertheless their sound does resemble most of the times more the one of a noise/punk/alternative rock band. Post rock bands, at least as far as I know them like GYBE or Mogwai are doing mainly instrumental, atmospheric type of music. TMV hasn't any similarity with any of those bands. For me it's a weird and pretentious alternative rock band. Although I've to say their guitar player Rodriguez has done some interesting solo records (which would be rather worth to be put on here than the band's ones in my opinion)!

| I wouldn't object to Dredg being under prog-related, it's true that they aren't entirely the textbook defintion of prog, but I also think they're sophisticated and complex enough within their own framework that they could remain where they are. Great band whichever segment of prog we decide to place them under. |

Well, I haven't heard their (supposedly) superior album El Cielo, but Catch Wthout Arms sounds like a mix of The Mars Volta and Modest Mouse, however you may take that.
