Hi, this is César Inca.
I just can't believe it!! What is it that makes BUBU symphonic? The violin? The combination of wind instrumentas and the violin? The long compositions? The guitar si so Frippian-Zappian, the violin lines are so dissonant most of the times, the flute-sax-violin ensabmles are so close to the jazzy side of RIO, the thythm section is so jazzy... what is so symphonic about it? The very stream sample in the Archives will be capable of showing any listener tha tthis band is not symphonic. At least, that's as far as I know of these two labels: if KC, Zappa and Univers Zeo are not symph, then hw ocome that Bubu are?

Yup, this is coming from the fact that Crimson and similar-sounding bands were in symphonic. But recently Crimson has changed hotel (the Symphonic was full) and art rock still had room >> Clearly to me Bubu is not symphonic and I fully agree that he should "expell it from symphonic". However, he should (and does I think  ) consult with us to see where it goes.
So theoretically Bubu should also do the jump (as KC did) to ART ROCK
Great album BTW ------------- let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

In another thread, btw, I have also questioned the art-rock label as placed on the shoulders of Happy the Man... but that's another thread, of course. Kind regards.

After a nice pm from Ivan, I dug my copy of Anabelas out and I'm listening to it now. It's an excellent album, but I'm not sure that it belongs in RIO/Avant prog - it seems to me to be more in keeping with Gentle Giant and King Crimson, who also had their avant garde moments. I'd vote for moving Bubu to Art Rock. I highly agree on the King Crimson parallels, but I'm not that sure about the GG thing: I can hear lots of Zappaesque (not GG-ish) dissonances in the violin-wind orchestrations and lots of sinister ambiences a la RIO, instead. Art-rock would mean a scandalous overlook upon some of the most essential sonic ingredients that make the "Anabelas" albums so special and BUBU such an essentially prog band from the one of the most extreme points of view.
I wish, I really wish I were not a Symphonic Prog Specialist. My opinion would the count for something more productive than just complaining futilely and fruitlessly in some discreet thread in the Errors & Omissions section.

Bubu has RIO moments. You have to listen all
Anabelas. It's amazing!
But I think they play symphonic-Prog. The bases are
all symphonic and melodic.
For this reason I think KC and VDGG are symphonic
too.
Of course KC has fusion and maybe metal-prog
albums. But Genesis and Yes have pop albums!
All of these bands, in my opinion, are symphonic in
their origin.

So... now BUBU is Art-Rock?... Oh, that's great, really great...
I live in a country next door to Argentina, I've listened to lots of Zappa & KC albums before I listened to Bubu for the first time, I then learned more about the connections between the avant-garde tendencies of Univers Zero & 20th century chamber and those of Bubu...
But no, the Art-Rock specialists from this "amazing place" know better. Right, now you'lle sing to me, a-la Peter Gabriel: "You're not one of us, not one of us, no, no, not one of us". |

Well, Art Zoyd's and Univers Zero's music have got symphonic orgins, too, but those origins come from a very different department from the (mostly) Baroque, Impressionist and Romantic sources from which standardized symphonic prog took its most academic-oriented tendencies. The chamber stuff that burtures Bubu's music is the same that nurtures Univers Zero: pulsation, dissonance, creepy intensity. Not dissonant as in the well articulated Bartok-based stuff by GG, but dissonant from textures and somber greyness, as in some early 20th century Russians and the most bombastic side of modern chamber.

Even better yet, don't mind this person's humble opinions. I'll keep posting about events and news, and maybe suggest new bands, so the rest of Prog Archives Collaborators can place them wherever... Sur oculto and October Equus have got their own threads somewhwre around here -- who knows, maybe they'll end up with a proud Art Rock medal on their sleeves and chests.
