A tough one for me and I don't like to choose much. But I'll say this, I was introduced to Death via Spiritual Healing and to this day Altering THe Future is one of my favourite Death songs (what amazing solo's by Murphy and Schuldiner). Human is to me an amazing album that stands apart in Chuck's discography as an exceptional and different album. It has a sound and energy that seem to be driven by pure rage and anger (which fits his statement at the thank you notes in the booklet - go read it). It is an album, that to me has not been topped again in his musical career. As for Individual Thought Patterns, it is a great album as well, only it contains some songs I don't particularly like, but it does have on it Trapped in a Corner, which is another Death favourite of mine. Then comes Symbolic, which after Human is, in my opinion, their second best accimplished album, meaning that as a whole it is their best second album after Human.

I voted for Human. Symbolic would be 2nd and Spiritual healing 3rd with Sound Of Perseverance.

Leprosy. Bought it when I was 15. Classic death-metal, great riffing and drumming. That's how I like them. Never thought of them as anything prog.

The Sound of Perseverance, without a doubt. I think it's the most progressive of them all. The playing is highly technical as usual, but on this album there's a little more room for experimentation and soloing from each member of the band, due to the structure of the songs, which is more "loose". Well, Schuldiner has never exactly stuck to classic verse/chorus/solo/chorus structures, but this time the pieces are lengthier and there are more radical shifts of passages during every track. I think that previous albums suffered from an occasional "stiffness" and lack of balance (technicality slightly overweighed composition at times), whereas on TSoP the balance is just right, showcasing a more mature approach to songwriting. As a result, there's also a lot of emotion emanating from the harmonies and melodies throughout the album; the lyrics are also better crafted and the music is touching in many ways, which is not exactly a common thing with death metal albums.
All albums from Human onward are outstanding. But, overall, I think this is their finest, similar to none other, holding a special kind of beauty, and definitely one of the most progressive releases of the tenth decade.
