I'm putting in my vote for Geddy. I think he's an amazing vocalist, even if he has no testicles. His voice is unique, what can you say!

Tough choice out of Hammill & Lake but voted for Gabriel as John Wetton wasn't on there

-------------

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Not totally unique. He sounds very similar to David Surkamp of Pavlov's Dog and Burke Shelley of Budgie

Yeah, I thought a couple more could have been added. One that would have been nice to see was Annie Haslim. My favorite was on the list so...yeah!

he did say out of the following though so I didn't get my panties all in a bunch either

Greg Lake has a pure English enunciation (sp?) that is perfect for the gravitas of prog rock.He could sing about bananas and make it worth listening to.Justin Hayward must be worthy of a mention as well.

Only person i think sounds like geddy at times is the singer of supertramp, he had geddy's 80's sound before geddy did himself

Posted By: Blacksword

Voted PG!

It was a tough choice, though. I like Jon Andersons voice a lot, and Hammills, and Geddy Lees, and Phil Collins..AND Greg Lake (although I'm not an ELP fan)

I tried to make my choice on the quality of the voice rather than which bands I like.

and to whoever said Justin Hayward deserved a mention, I couldn't agree more. He had a fantastic voice. Didn't rate the Moody's much though..

Aye , where's Todd *the godd* Rundgren?

Tough having to choose between such imense quality ; Hammill...Gabriel...Anderson , but my vote goes to Fish

Posted By: Blacksword
Date Posted: November 29 2004 at 08:38

Not a single female singer in the poll!!

I know there are not many, but Annie Haslam should get a mention. I'm just exploring Renaissance albums at the moment, and I'm quite blown away by her voice.

Gabriel every time in that list - Though Lee and Anderson are a close second !

I voted for Anderson (nobody can sing like him), but then I realised that there is another criteria I find most fitting for choosing the best between equally interesting performers: The thing is that Hamill, Anderson, Gabriel, Lee... they are all good, but can also be annoying to many people (I like Gabriel and Anderson, but can't stand Hamill or Fish. I'm in no-man's land for Lee). But I doubt anybody wouldn't like Greg Lake.

So, Greg Lake is my ideal prog singer.

Out of this list I'd have to vote for Peter Hammill.

But to me the greatest vocalist has to be Comus' Roger Wootton.

Totally agreed.  Another female singer who should have been in the poll is Joanne Hogg from Iona, she really has a beautiful voice and her singing on live records is just as strong as on studio albums.

Peter Gabriel, probably followed by Jon Andersson.

By the way, I don't know why many people here are so amazed with Fish. Steve Hogarth is a much better vocalist, although it is only my opinion.

I agree with that he does sound like David Surkamp   The Truth is STEVE WALSH from KANSAS back in the 70`s is KNOWN to have the best voice in Prog  ... but he isn`t even on the list   ...  great list

I would chose Peter Gabriel of course followed by Hammill and I would have
to think if Steve Walsh was included.

EDIT: P.S. who's Phil Collines?

Shluman or Gabriel are my favorites. I voted Shluman. He is not as techinically briliant as Jon Anderson, for instance, but there's something really special about his voice. At first I thought his voice was annoying but I listened more to Gentle Giant and I just find his voice amazing and unique.

Same goes for Gabriel, about the "not so brilliant techinicaly, but has a very unique voice"...
