From The New York Times, Monday, May 8th:

Bright Side of 'Dark Side'

The Pink Floyd album "Dark Side of the Moon" has chalked up 1,500 weeks on the Billboard charts since it made its debut at the No. 95 position on the Top 200 chart on March 17, 1973. According to Billboard, more than 14 years — 736 weeks, to be exact — passed before it dropped off in July 1988, but it came back again and then ran for 759 weeks on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. The company reported that about 40 million copies of "Dark Side of the Moon" (Capitol/EMI) have been sold, and it still sells 8,000 to 9,000 copies a week. Billboard reported that the runner up to "Dark Side" on the Top 200 chart is "Legend" by Bob Marley and the Wailers, which is several years behind: Pink Floyd leads Marley in total chart weeks by almost 2 to 1.

No surprise with Floyd, but I didn't expect Bob Marley is so popular.

Nice to have a permanent income from one release... Sales still fall short of the popular megasellers. I think the eagles have the top at 68mill plus. Explains how they could afford the over the top extravagence of the pulse light show.

I wonder then, has DSOTM overtaken, in terms of sales, Fleetwood Macs 'Tumors' (I mean Rumours), and Michael Jackson's DeadThriller?

^No, not the last time I looked. I think it goes Eagles greatest hits, then Thriller, and a whole heap more before you get to the 40 million bracket

That's quite some record - in more than one sense.
Helps keep Nick Mason in Ferraris!

It's overrated. But being overrated is underrated

I'd like to see Dark Side of the Moon pass Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Just so I can laugh really..

So it is true that DSOTM is second best selling album next to Thriller?

^No... here's a link to the RIAA version of the all time best sellers

You can still celebrate- the Wall is 3rd after Thriller.

Dark Sides fame is for remaining in the charts for so long (that's the standard weekly charts, not the all time charts).
