Norwegian 70s proggers Popul Vuh, later changed their name to Popol Ace (because of the German band). Released 4 albums. Their vocalist Jahn Teigen was asked by Genesis to replace Peter Gabriel in 1975!

Yes,Popol Vuh (Ace) were good but as for Teigen being asked to replace Gabriel in Genesis,Tony Banks himself denies it and I think I trust his recollection a bit more than Teigen's.

I think it was contact between Teigen and the Genesis management, though it might have been informal.
|

Very informal,I think. The Genesis management may have had a few feelers out,but Tony Banks says that no concrete offer was made to anyone.

Focus for me too but I notice that Rush and Saga were omitted.

I bet it is a snub
How on Earth could one forget Rush, even if they weren't a fan. They're Canadas finest IMO.
Dont know much about Saga. I'll have to research them..

Saga is a minefield, be sure to check out their earlier stuff first. Great synth/keyboard based prog. Everything up until and including Behaviour is worth a listen, after that I would only buy Generation 13 and Steel Umbrellas. The rest of their catalogue is aquried taste at best.

Pity it's not possible to expand the poll list. But then there were so many good non-UK bands in the 1970s (BANCO, to give just one example). Of those in the poll list I've voted for PFM, which is one of my favourite Prog groups *including* UK bands.

Choosing between Focus and PFM was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make...
But PFM get my vote!
(Although I'd like to have seen Amon Duul II and Can in there, just to make the decision next to impossible )

I'd go for PFM, then Focus, but I thought that poor, neglected, non-Archived Celtic proggers HORSLIPS deserved a vote.

Just thought I would include some reasoning.
Most of the great prog music in my opionion was
made during the 70's stateside and in the UK. The
chamber was in confusing in the castles in England.
And Rock n Roll P**** was everywhere in the states.
The record industry distroyed the creative talent
along with government monitoring and creativity
ceased to exist. The German scene got going later ,
mid seventies and lasted until the mid 80s, while the
continent popped up good acts here and there also
during this time period.
The reason some bands were not included, my
opionion:
Triumvirat - ELP knockoff, lyrics trying to sound tough
but no real depth
Eloy - never found anything great by them, although I
liked the nude album cover
Popul Vuh - Florian had good moments but to much
meddling around on a majority of his stuff
Rush - never a serious truly original band, Priest of
the temples of syrinx, is circled by horseflies and
Farewell to Kings and Moving ..... they almost made
something interesting. Neil Young was the best
thing to come from canada and a legitimate talent.
Bancos italian lyrics always got in the way for me,
and english version is to hard to get into the vocals.
Anyway thats why I dont consider those bands.
Horslips = irish Jethro Tull, try Book of Invasions for
those interested, better than any Steeleye Span,
Renaissance, etc. If you like that give Audience -
House on the Hill a spin.

[QUOTE=DallasBryan]Rush - never a serious truly original band, Priest of the temples of syrinx, is circled by horseflies and Farewell to Kings and Moving ..... they almost made something interesting. QUOTE]
Erm.....
Rush-never a "serious" "truly original" band.Whilst you are entitled to your opinion as to the merits or otherwise of their work, the highlighted statement beggars belief. Rush have been releasing albums since 1974-that's 30 years in old money. Now whilst I will accept freely that the first 3 albums were derivative, I would be interested to hear your opinion as to which groups or sounds the bulk of their catalogue resembles? I would say that regardless of whether they are prog or not (another argument for another thread) they are probably the most distinctive rock band of the last 30 years. This is why they have survived so long-they are unique.
As for them not being serious or being taken seriously, I couldnt even hazard a guess as to your "logic".
I love to take the piss myself, but I'm not sure that this is your intention. Further explanation required...

I'm entirely in your corner on this,Reed. Yes,you read correctly. I agree completely with you. Can I proceed or do you need more time to recover from the shock? To say that Rush is not original is quite ludicrous,if it's one thing they certainly are,it's original. This seems like a joke to me,I can't believe anyone in their right mind would doubt Rush's credentials as both one of the most original and serious (in terms of intelligence and depth) bands of the last 30 years.

No problem fellas
I consider progressive rock to exist for 3 main
reasons
1. for those who apprieciate science fiction, such as
Lord of the Rings, Dune and comic books. Basically
esoteric avenues for child fantasy and the pubescent
mind. The "I am Not Experienced" crowd.
2. experimental music avenues for complex
musicianship and overworking of speed verses
content music, and intellectual self indulgence.(most
jazz fusion, Gentle Giant could even fall into this
category). Not for the mainstream but musicians
who are over indulged in their art.
3. for a spiritual avenue to develop relations between
darkness and mans conscience thru occult,
hallucenagenic states, narcotic and sexual
experiences. Performed by advanced musicians that
carry an intellectual edge.
I am of the 3rd persuation and am not a true prog
head, as I dont consider it but one of the best
avenues in music for story telling or altered states.
My musical foundation was laid in the 70s and saw
most of you guys favorites many times as I was a
roadie working with VariLite during the 70s and early
80s. I have met 100s of your favorite musicians and
burned the house down. This is just my viewpoint
and I understand all will not agree.
I will never be a backer of Rush or U2 because I
consider them 2nd tier groups. I recognize the
impact they have had on some I just think it is the
difference in sci-fi verses the state of mans spiritual
or sexual condition and the stories of that interaction
in music .
2 types of popular bands - those who got it and
those who wish thy did!
Those who see my perspective should engage in
this conversion.
Those who dont , NO HARM INTENDED!!!

Look at all the advertising
Some kind of show, come if you?re going
Patronize the magic dragon
Walk through the door, kiss off your boredom
Tuning up the orchestra, bringing down the ceiling
lights
All at once the curtain goes up
Now it begins, strike up the band
Bring on the dancing girls and the freak parade
Look to your right where a gentleman sat
There sits a monkey in a tall silk hat
The lady on the left is now a pumpkin pie
That?s when you notice that your chair is flying
High in the sky out over the sea
But don?t wonder why, where else could you be but
Where anything can happen,
Down at the magic dragon theatre
More than you can imagine,
Down at the magic dragon theatre
(come to the magic dragon)
Do you fancy melodrama?
Tragedy?s mask, yours for the asking
Madness a la magic dragon
Who could that be at this time of night?
I?m sure we weren?t followed dr. klang
Wait, pull down your knickers, he?s going to hit us
Here goes your cue, don?t blow your line
Dam, danger! I?m gonna go out there and get, get,
get ...
All of a sudden there?s a flash of light
Stars begin appearing in a moonlit night
Your vision of reality has gone awry
That?s when you notice that your mind is flying
High in the sky out over the sea
But don?t wonder why, where else could you be but

RUSH breakdown
Alex Lifeson could of had a good career with a top
tier prog band, as well as Neil Pert, a wonderful
drummer.
Geddy Lee should have stuck to playing the bass
and left his fairytales in the fire.
With a good psychedelic songwriter and a
keyboardist or maybe a sax/flute player they could
have been something.

There's safety in numbers
When you learn to divide
How can we be in
If there is no outside
All shades of opinion
Feed an open mind
But your values are twisted
Let us help you unwind
You may look like we do
Talk like we do
-But you know how it is
You're not one of us
Not one of us
No you're not one of us

You waltz on here on talk utter nonesense to us as if you are teaching us something.
Those who see your perspective would have to have their heads up the same orifice as you---and being a proctologist I know that is dangerous, unhealthy and biologically impractical.

You talk about the seventies but your observations suggest you are just out of elementary school. What is that (^) garbage all about.
Why even mention U2 on a Prog Rock forum? Apart from the fact that they are probably the biggest band in the world, like them or loathe them, they quite obviously belong to the "1st Tier"
As for this:
for those who apprieciate science fiction, such as Lord of the Rings, Dune and comic books. Basically esoteric avenues for child fantasy and the pubescent mind. The "I am Not Experienced" crowd.
Gdub and Peter just pretend to be inexperienced, loveless, loners. They are not really like that and you musn't judge all of us in the same vein.
For myself I did have sex once, but lets face it it is overrated and messy.

How many trios go into 100's-33, 66,100?
There weren't hundreds of bands of the Prog Persuasion touring in the late 70's and 80's!

name that tune?
When I talk to the trees
O'great trees who have learned to speak slowly
I know that they believe that they have an answer
Then I walk in the city where I cannot hear it
When I talk to the city
I have already learned three answers
before I call the question
And slowly, I wish myself among trees
but can not hear myself wishing
When I talk to the people
who are the trees that grow in the city
they reply with a fond kindness, slowly
but there is no answer
for experience to be made by mistake
Upon this key, time will slide,
Beyond the lock, you lose your mind.
And as our door becomes open,
A rush of sound is found inside
Creating Dreams that pass you by.
You may live through your life a long long time..
But you will never know from where it came,
Yet all you've seen is what you've wanted to,
You`re walking forward as you look behind,
Still watching those old memories fade and die...
This door is heavy, and is deeply stained,
With wasted tears, that try to fight in vain,
You may be sitting, feeling quite secure,
But listen carefully - and this key is yours -
For we can lead you far beyond that door...
there are dangers hidden, trust in that language
and it is precisely this conception that which must
not be changed
the epitome of our language is patterns containment
of thought and sound
<shouting nonsense words>
I die to fight!!
I die to fight!!
I die to fight!!

Upon this key, time will slide,
Beyond each lock, you lose your mind.
And as our door becomes open,
A rush of sound is found inside -

Bent cold sidewalk, open the gate,
I may be late but I can no longer wait.
Stealing the crown that stood me up,
I'm laying the table with dusty plates.
Bent cold sidewalk, open the gate,
I may be late but I can no longer wait.
Playing the god to fix your gaze,
I'm holding you firm on another day.
Bent cold sidewalk, open the gate,
I may be late but I can no longer wait.
