If you could choose 3 prog guitarists for a G3 jam who would they be?
When Robert Fripp played with Satriani and Vai a lot of people didn´t think the combination of those three worked that well, mainly because Satch and Vai are more "in your face extroverted types of gutarists"
So, when choosing, try to put this into consideration, and don´t team up prog gutarists with prog metal guitarists.
I would like to see a G3 jam with Steve Rothery, Alan Morse and Dave Gilmour
OR
John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen and Michael Romeo (OK Malmsteen isn´t prog but he would fit in with the other two)
OK, What threesomes can you think of that would be great together.

I like the idea of John Petrucci and Michael Romeo in a G3 but not with Malmsteen, oh please not Malmsteen. I'd like to see Mikael Åkerfeldt in something like that but I wouldn't know who to line him up with, I really like his guitar sound, both heavy and clean.

Petrucci, Romeo and Friedman (Ex-Megadeth) would be an interesting prog metal G3
Hackett, Howe and Gilmour would be an interesting prog rock G3

Excellent choices. EDIT: Except I would disagree with the Fripp "back in the day" comment. Have you heard his live improv's with the Projekts? They are incredible IMO. They did a few albums together, as I'm sure you know. BTW, yesterday I got "Birds of Fire" and was utterly blown away.

Howe, Petrucci, Rothery
Petrucci's already proved that he can play with the other two but it would be interesting to see how they would all work together.

Well...Petrucci is an obvious choice, i would probably pick Romero or Gilmour as my second and as for the 3rd...Lifeson perhaps? maybe even Howe? Theres plenty of combinations, there'd have to be a G3 every week if we wanted them all. ------------- It's Calling Me Back To My Home. |
