If you could choose 3 prog guitarists for a G3 jam who would they be?
When Robert Fripp played with Satriani and Vai a lot of people didn´t think the combination of those three worked that well, mainly because Satch and Vai are more "in your face extroverted types of gutarists"
So, when choosing, try to put this into consideration, and don´t team up prog gutarists with prog metal guitarists.
I would like to see a G3 jam with Steve Rothery, Alan Morse and Dave Gilmour
OR
John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen and Michael Romeo (OK Malmsteen isn´t prog but he would fit in with the other two)
OK, What threesomes can you think of that would be great together.

I like the idea of John Petrucci and Michael Romeo in a G3 but not with Malmsteen, oh please not Malmsteen. I'd like to see Mikael Åkerfeldt in something like that but I wouldn't know who to line him up with, I really like his guitar sound, both heavy and clean.

Petrucci, Romeo and Friedman (Ex-Megadeth) would be an interesting prog metal G3
Hackett, Howe and Gilmour would be an interesting prog rock G3

Excellent choices.
EDIT: Except I would disagree with the Fripp "back in the day" comment. Have you heard his live improv's with the Projekts? They are incredible IMO. The newer Crimson is great at jamming and Fripp centainly hasn't changed.

Great in harmonizing genres, amongst virtuous chords, in similarity's sake ...though, you pretty much take out most of our chances to not repeat any posts. ![Big smile](smileys/smiley4.gif)

They did a few albums together, as I'm sure you know. BTW, yesterday I got "Birds of Fire" and was utterly blown away.

Allan Morse (Spock's Beard) - Roine Stolt (The Flower kings) - Laurent James (Lord Of Mushrooms): some symphonic idyll, there.
John Petrucci (Dream Theater) - Johan Reinholdz (Andromeda) - Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth): progressive metal virtuosism.
Steve Hackett (Genesis) - Steve Rothery (Marillion) - Nick Barrett (Pendragon): obvious, evolutionary chart, anyone?
Jan Akkerman (Focus) - Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) - Alex Lifeson
(Rush): canopied potential, hightened towards common status, in
hard-rock riff proficiency, tinged, of course, with more creative
streams.
Adam Jones (Tool) - Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) - Jim Matheos (Fates
Warning): sullen preferences subsiding to technically graced somber
ambiences.
Daniel Gildenglöw (Pain Of Salvation) - Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon) - Karl
Groom (Threshold): mellifluously sterling shimmer, nourishing
immaculately euphonious gradations of metal tones.
Luca Turilli (Rhapsody) - Steve Vai - Stéphan Forté (Adagio): Stéphan
to hold the previous two's misdemeanours at bay from exacerbating
techniques (Vai's, anyway).
David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) - Frank Bornemann (Eloy) - Bryan Josh
(Mostly Autumn): eerie subtleties, quaintly framed across melodic
transience.
Frank Camiola (Frogg Café) - Andy Latimer (Camel) - Pye Hastings
(Caravan): unnerving sceneries to poise substantially harmonious
consanguinity, throughout the artists' essence.
Steve Howe (Yes) - Allan Holdsworth - Brian May (Queen): tepid moods to conjure, emmergent in artful grandeur.
California Guitar Trio? (Nah)
Kind of a "Where's Waldo" pattern inlayed about some noticeable
incongruities; nevertheless, an interesting array each provide to coax
their flairs with.

I haven't heard them yet. If he can still jam like he used to then keep him that way ![Smile](smileys/smiley1.gif)

Heres an interesting one for you:
Howe, Petrucci, Rothery
Petrucci's already proved that he can play with the other two but it would be interesting to see how they would all work together.

Well...Petrucci is an obvious choice, i would probably pick Romero or Gilmour as my second and as for the 3rd...Lifeson perhaps? maybe even Howe?
Theres plenty of combinations, there'd have to be a G3 every week if we wanted them all.
