IMO, there's nothing better than walking outside and in the wilderness while listening to prog with headphones. Just sitting in the forest or on seaside while listening to prog is extremely cool.

So which music do you like to listen to when you're in the wilderness?

Camel is good for walking in the woods. Early Floyd for relaxing. Ozric Tentacles for fast paced bike riding, and Yes for slow riding.

I don't want to seem like I'm picky, anything I like is good in nature.

There's little wilderness here, but when I walk around campus and such, I always find it cool to listen to GY!BE and Do Make Say Think for some reason.

Mountains for me. I sit there for hours....

I listen to lots of stuff there, but the best for this setting are:

  • Early Pink Floyd
  • Klaus Schulze
  • Post rock
When I'm riding my bike tho get there(15 mile ride) Metal or other loud/fast paced music is the best.

  • Disco Volante
  • Lateralus
  • Megadeth
  • Early Metallica
  • Maiden

You would think Brian Eno's On Land would be perfect, but I've never tried it myself.

To me their's nothing like a moderate temperature Spring morning while listening to "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

Try it while driving or walking.

My avatar is the vocalist of glam rock/brit pop band Suede (aka the London Suede in USA). They were once good before the guitarist left the band. Albums to hear: self titled debut and 'Dog Man Star.'

I prefer no music when out in the forest or whatever. Music would ruin it.

Some suggestions for loud music when your with other people outdoors:

Campfire/drinking or whatever you choose to do in the forest or a park: Comus, Incredible String Band, Spirogyra, Amon Düül II, Celeste, early Gong....

In general Folk, Psychedelic, and lots of italian Prog is perfect (That is if you have friends also into it, of course).

On a boat or at the seaside: Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Soft Machine (Third), National Health, Hatfield and the North...Folk stuff works here as well.

Be shure that you wear headphones with you when you listen for this kind of music around campfire. LOL
For me it's OK but the others I doubt.

I put a selection of songs from most bands I have albums of on to my MP3 player, and just put it on random.

I also tend to go everywhere with this MP3 player.

I totally agree with Snowdog on this topic. Just listen to nature and if it be silence...then so be it. No extraneous aural stimulation. Just the wind, birds and stillness of the moment.

Nature ... most of the time I'm enjoying it in the form of cycling tours through the woods next to my home town. I really enjoy listening to music while cycling ... usually I'm exhausting myself in the process, and listening to some really aggressive, driving stuff (mostly metal) really gets me in a "zone". But the other extreme is also nice - listening to really calm, relaxing music while driving not so fast.

I haven't listened to those, but in that area I also recommend:

- Fantomas - Delirium Cordia
- Painkiller - Execution Ground
- GYBE - anythingWink

Usually "classical" when I'm out in nature.  A bit obvious perhaps then that when I'm sitting at the seaside I do like to listen to Debussy's La Mer.

It's often Pink Floyd when out under the stars.

When mountain biking and hiking, I prefer the gentle sounds of nature plus the sound of my feet or my tires.  I'm also keep my ears open in case some bears, cougars, or psycho mountain cannibals are around... I may be a bit paranoid.

Ozrics are nice. So is most Pink Floyd.

Me three.  Hearing the berds and the forest in general is one of the best parts.  You expierence nature with all senses.  I prefer to listen to music in my room with head phones to truely listen to the music.

I agree with the idea of no music at all. You have to hear the birds, otherwise you miss out on a big part of the experience.

Besides, around my area you have to listen for any animal sounds in case it is sending out a warning that you are coming too close. The last thing you want to do is to get too close to a bear, deer or moose.

For the walk to school I listen to anything though, although usually something about 15 minutes in length.

I haven't heard Painkiller but Delirium Cordia by Fantomas is one creepy experience. YanquiU.X.O. by GYBE sounds more like despair and desolation stuff like that.

If i'm just relaxing or hiking or somethong like that, than I prefer "nature's music". But If i'm doing yard work or something of the sort I listen to anything, because let's face it, when your raking for 3 hours, you need a little entertainment to ease the time. Wink
