I love a lot of Prog Metal, but I just canīt get into Pain of Salvation for some strange reason. Is there a band on this list that you have this same problem ? |

I haven't heard Queensryche and I haven't heard Tool that much to say its hard to get so... I don't know what to vote for  -------------

All of them I can appreciate and listen to. But I must admit that some of Tool's material isn't my cup of tea. Since I am an open-minded listener I`ve found into the band's sound and enjoy the unique dark art-approach the band delivers. Though I really can understand why some people have problems to get into them. Riverside. I like their albums, but I fail to understand how they can be rated that highly, with Second Life Syndrome at what? position #3 in the prog metal chart.

I think in their day Queensryche were prog metal (new and thought provoking), but nowadays some of it just sounds like metal.
Tool are more alternative metal.
Symphony X would be an example of a true Prog Metal band. Of course these are just my opinions.

Pain of Salvation.
Some songs have rhythms that don't seem to hit me at all, making it sound to me unpleasant and uncomfortable.
Some obvious examples are Fandango and .. what was the name of that song about a woman killing herself in Remedy Lane? Anyways, it has very uncomfortable metal riffs.
I have 4 albums:
The Perfect Element: It's ok and doesn't have many uncomfortable rhythms but the album is not that memorable, except for King of Loss and the unique opening track. 6/10
Remedy Lane: great album plagued by weird rhythms in a few tracks. The last track is easily their best song. 7/10
Be: I call it the parody of prog-rock concept albums, and has intolerable voice clips all over the place. However, it is a strong effort instrumentally. 5/10
12:5: Easily the one I like the most. It sounds very pleasant, easy to listen to, and has no weird, ridiculous rhythms. It seems like all the songs here are from other albums as I recognize about a half of them, all being improved here. 8.5/10

Zitro, I can relate to that uncomfortable statement, I should have named the poll Which is the most uncomfortable.

Love all of them, though I'm a little suprised Tool is in the lead.
From my experiance nobody I know can get into Pain Of Salvation.

I'm into mostly all of them but to a lesser extent Queensryche. My vote went to Symphony X though...they give Dream Theater clones a new meaning and are absolutely dreadful live. |

I don't get Tool. Listened to a couple of albums by them, but not one grabbed me by the balls and/or gave me a good feeling.
Symphony X doesn't do it for me either, but it doesn't irritate me or something, just don't like it as much as PoS, Riverside or DT.

Perhaps as far as opinions go, it would make more sense to say that people who like the groups I dislike don't get them? Anyway, I refuse to admit that any of the groups in the poll deserve to be used as a measuring stick for other good progmetal groups.

Never really saw the big deal with Queensryche. I enjoy all the others except Pain of Salvation - I still haven't listened to anything by them so I can't comment one way or the other. |

I'm afraid I don't 'get' prog metal much at all and therefore the bands listed I have limited tolerance for but I can understand why people are really into it and,for what its worth ,I think that's great.Prog metal is at least just as important as any other 'genre' in prog.[don't you just hate that term] ------------- Looking still the same after all these years... mrgd |

The only band on that list I DO get is Tool.
The rest all fall under a similar style, Tool is completely different. Tool probably shouldn't be thrown in with those bands anyway, its hard to say whether they are really prog or metal at all.
As far as bands in the archives go I like tons listed as prog metal, but none of the ones that actually are prog metal...

See, they aren't prog metal either. Probably the best description is Melodic Death Metal, or Gothenburg Sound.

The only Melodeath albums Opeth released were the first two. The rest is Progmetal, well, besides Damnation.

I don't own any Symphony X, but from what I've heard thus far... the
musicianship is impressive, but it doesn't seem overly passionate or
emotionally moving to my ears. I also don't own any Riverside yet, but what I've heard, I liked. Same with Pain of Salvation... I already really like the title track on Remedy Lane, have listened to it repeatedly. It's definitely high on the list of purchase priorities for me. Dream Theater, I still appreciate them... but I think I'm finally growing weary of them. Tool is absolutely phenomenal. I find their music extremely cathartic, and their conceptual depth astounds me. Can't wait for my copy of 10,000 Days to arrive (In the mail now!) Queensryche was groundbreaking "back in the day". Rage for Order and Operation: Mindcrime were absolutely ahead of their time. Those albums are definitely Prog Metal to my ears. These days... I'm afraid they've lost their magic. I'm giving Mindcrime II a chance, though (it's coming in the same package as 10,000 Days). I just realized I hadn't voted!  I went with Symphony X, although that may change once I actually put some time into it... ------------- Pure Brilliance:

Out of the ones i've heard there, i'd say Symphony X. I like "The Oddysy" song but not really into the rest of their stuff.
