From the People Of The South Wind official fan club FAQ:
Rich said in a recent _Closet Chronicle_ interview (Summer '94) that he was blinded in that eye by a "bomb" he made between 7th and 8th grades. The eye was replaced with a glass eye, which gave it the "lazy eye" appearance which is noticeable in some early pictures of him (the back cover photo on _SfA_, e.g.).
