I'm starting to put a "recording studio" together in my room, but i don't know what to do about a good mixer because my budget is limited and there are so many mixers out there. Can anybody offer any advice?

thanks

I have a Tascam US-224, a nifty little box that interfaces with many sequencing packages, including Acid and Sonar.

I think they're about $250 - but well worth it.

err... i'm talking more along the lines of an actual sound board type mixer, not a portastudio...

but thank you anyhow

The smaller Spirits have a good price/ performance ratio. How many channels do you plan to use?

try to find either a used Mackie or a new/ used Spirit. If your budget is really tight, Midiman makes some decent mixers for small amounts of cash.

You can't go wrong with a Spirit - I've been impressed with the Folio range.

I use the Tascam for simultaneous multi-channel recording - it's a bit more than just a Portastudio; it's a hardware interface to the software -  you get full multitracking capabilities without having to make fiddly mouse clicks and drags everywhere.

But I'll admit it's useless for miking up a drum kit

The smaller Mackie Mixers are excellent, V quiet and robust. The VLZ series link is below:

They also have a budget rance under the Tapco brand.

Hope this is of use.

oh yeah, and then there's Behringers...apparently they sound a bit like the Mackies (according to Mackie's legal department, anyway)
