i'm sure most PA members have many lp's and cd's in their collection, so how do you store them? have you a neat shelving system so a particular album can be found instantly, or do you have to search through confused heaps around the house..?? i'm constantly changing things around, the long winter evenings just fly by..

I have different shelves for Prog Rock, Prog Metal, One shelf for Metal, Shred (Guitar) Jazz, Electronic and Classical, and another one for any other stuff (Rock/Pop).
Each shelf is sorted alphabetically, and the releases by each artist are mostly sorted by year.

By broad music genre first (classical, jazz, new age, pop/rock,
mandarin rock), then per genre alphabetical by artist (or composer for
classical). It takes me less than 20 seconds to find the CD that I want
from our 4000 or so collection.
That is, unless my wife put them wrong at the wrong spot.

My vinyls are sorted alphabetically by artist and each artist's albums are in chronological order, but my CDs are in no logical order.

Chronologically within each artist. Example:
Frank Zappa: Absolutely Free, Lumpy Gravy etc. then Shadow Gallery: Shadow Gallery, Carved In Stone etc.
So artist randomly placed, but their albums are placed chronologically.

All my CD's are in neat shelves with around 600 in flight cases. I have one unit in alphabetical order the rest are a mess. Sometimes I give up looking for an album.

Alphabetically by artist, then chronologically.
On a side note: I really hate it when people put, for example, Peter Hammill under P instead of H (I've seen record stores do it!)

I have my record collection in alphabetical order by artist (regardless of genre) and then multiple albums within an artist are arranged in order of release.
