Well,I've created it .Just put my fantasies in...

OK,it's going to be neo-prog,but dark and heavy one.Just imagine a mixture of I&W with TOOL/OPETH/PORCUPINE TREE stuff(have I just described RIVERSIDE's style? )...

It would be a concept story(return to a Formula, when a concept albums always win!!! ),based on Jester-related stuff(yes,as it usually happens in neo-prog ).Petrucci would learn to play Rothery-like solos, and Rudess' pianos would sound much darker this time(the whole sound-producing work would be close to Dark Matter/The Dreams of Men one...with some influences from TOOL/OPETH,yes,I've already told that ).

But the songs would be much more complex(just remeber MARILLION's 8-min epics:they had at least 3-4 different parts!!!),instead of wandering around few chords in Stream of Consciousness(don't get me wrong:I like it,but it's quite long )!

I even give you a tracklist and some comments:

DREAM THEATER "CURTAIN CALL" 200?

1.The Breakthrough 10.16
(8th & 9th parts of Portnoy's trip;doesn't relate to album's concept,just starting track)

2.Deep inside the Night 4.38 (instrumental) (a dark and moody PT-like track)

3.Strings 13.52 (a first main epic here,related with puppet's theme - puppet on a string etc )

4.Pieces of my Heart 5.21 (a touching love-ballad,very Neo-prog one!!!)

5.Into the Cradle 3.44 (an acoustical FOLKISH track with violin and flute(JT-like)!!!Yes,a bit experimental for usual DT,but I need it here!!!)

6.Sleepless 11.05 (another epic, very dark and metal this time)

7.Winds 7.33 (a nervous track...dark and complex,unusually stuck inside the Neo-Prog concept album ...)

8.Alone on the Hill 3.27 (a pre-coda track,related to 5th one)

9.Reflection in the Mirror 15.19 (yeah!!!A main stuff here, related to THE MIRROR's theme lyrically and a vintage heavy Neo musically!!!Great ballad coda )

Well...share your thoughts

I think theyre next album will absolutely be neo-prog. They are trying to
write to a prog audience now. I think it will be forced though and you will
hear the annoyance of their restraints.

I hope their next album will be like Awake or Images & Words again. Though they'll most likely continue in the Octavarium style...

Nice prediction, BTW!

from the time Ruddess joined, they wrote (that's purely IMHO) 2 wonderful albums (Metropolis 2 and 6 Degrees) and 2 not-so-wonderful albums (Train and Ocatavarium).

I suggest them to hold to a pattern and write 2 complex heavy and wonderful albums. 9th on 2 CDs, and 10th on 4CDs, and maybe 5th bonus disc with single 75-minute instrumental tracks called Dance of Eternity part 2, or something...

Hey, when I was 18, I was writing "fantasy albums" all the time, I even had my preferred fantasy bands ("Hyponotic Horizon", "Operant"), and I was doing the LP sleeves

It would be nice to open a section of "unreal prog" in this website

That actually sounds appealing.  Unfortunately, Dream Theater are trying their damnedest to "update" their sound by ripping off Muse and Coldplay.

I fully except them to have a couple of Avenged Sevenfold inspired songs on album 9.

Thats a pretty cool concept you got there. I don't know what to expect from them, I like Train and Octa, I think this is where they'll be going, heavy, progressive and melodic. It would be amazing if they did another concpet album, its time for one. Now you've mentioned it Octa does have a coldplay and muse sound to it. Maybe it'll have an Opeth, Devin Townsend Pocupine tree influence. I'd like that... Alot.

I would. I like DT for creativity. "Pleasing fans" sounds very artificial to me, it's like trying to create "SFAM pt. 2" for DT or "Close To The Edge pt. 2" for Yes. I don't like it that way. It's in past, move on. Maybe this is the main reason for my love of Frank Zappa's music. He just didn't give a damn and played music he liked at certain moment in his life.

It just came to my mind, that this hypotetical album would be the 10th. IMHO...

1. Wneh dream and Day Unite
2. Images and words
3. Awake
4. A change of seasons <<--- (1)
5. Falling into infinity
6. Metropolis pert II
7. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
8. Train Of Thought
9. Octavarium

(1) I know that A Change Of Season is not strictly a studio album, but an unreleased suit of 23 minutes deserves mention...

Of course, IMHO.

I hope they DON'T try and please their fans (apart from yours truly) and release their heaviest and most experimental and/or technical CD.

Funnily enough, a few months before the release of 'Octavarium' I dreamt I heard the first song from what was, in the dream, supposed to be their eighth album and it was MUCH better than 'The Root of All Evil'. It had an air similar to the 'SDoIT' suite. Damn, I hope they somehow intercepted that dream and record that song.

As a religious person I can only admire and feel humbled by the ardent, zealous, stubborn faith people like these here put into their dislike, maybe even hate of certain artists. How else could one explain the unrelenting determination with which they use every occasion to express their contempt of idols and release pearls of wisdom upon the unenlightened?  When I read posts like these I picture people who structure their days around the grim resolve to always combat the shadow cast on this fallen world by the blasphemous adoration the filthy heathens direct unto abominations and perverse satisfaction they derive from this repulsive act. Alas, for my pitiful self cannot comprehend the wisdom brought by these living icSleepyns of faith. I am not worthy that Thou should post in the same thread as I do, for I am sinful, but post Thou first a word and my CD player shall be healed.

But I didn't know about remasters. I wonder, how can they add a few bonuses, if their albums are long. Maybe, bonus disk? That would be great.

I'm gonna say that they should let the man of the group Myung write the lyrics.  He's so quiet i'd love to hear what he has to say.  But I do agree that they should do another 2-disc like Degrees only they should go back to their Awake roots, and write another dark and disturbing album in the vein of PT or Opeth.  I wonder what James would sound like growling?

Honestly, I think they should dedicate their ninth studio album to the closing series of their AA-inspired piece ("The Glass Prison," "This Dying Soul," and "The Root of All Evil") by having the concluding installment be just one long conceptual release. I'm sure I'm alone in this suggestion, but personally I think it'd be somewhat of a decent album . . . then again, I liked "Octavarium."

Somwhere I have a Photoshop thingy I created of the double album by an invented band that an online friend and I used to discuss in music forums just to confuse people. They were called Eminent Domain, the album is Anonymously Eponymous. The only track name I remember was the single (first track, side two) called Pyramid Chambermaid, which I envisioned as some sort of T Rexy Glam Rock/Pop shouter. I'll see if I can find it and start an "Invented bands" thread.

I think that interview deserves its own thread...hahahah.

I personally hope DT is able to find some new interesting direction to go with the next album, show some growth (though its a tad difficult imagining a band like that having much room for growth). I found Octavarium to be a little too much of a mash-up (as well as a bit of a ripoff )...really hope they're able to find a steady new sound in their next album.

One can always dream :o )

I could understand this being a useful thread if it's discussion for what an individual would like Dream Theater to do, but as far as predicting what Dream Theater will do...that's impossible.

One of the few bands which leaves no indication of their next artistic route is Dream Theater.  I have to say, that when Dream Theater releases their latest album, I am always suprised by what I hear.  Never could I have predicted what Octavarium was, Six Degrees, or Train of Thought.  Rest assured, I have loved everything this band has done.

What would I like to see Dream Theater do?  Well let me tell you.

I would like another double album.  The first disc featuring more traditional Dream Theater styled metal songs.  A lot of six minute shread tunes and a couple cool and dark ballads would be excellent.

The second disc however would be much more ambitious.  What I would like to see here would be a more symphonic progressive rock style showing Mike Portnoy's Transatlantic influence.  Three epics would be ideal, the longest being about twenty minutes.  Full orchestration of course is a dream, but not as much as a dream of guests appearances by Roine Stolt, Andy Tillison, and Neal Morse on vocals is.

They need to re-invent themselves. Maybe push the limits of acoustic Prog on a few songs. Portnoy needs a sound factory of pads with fabricated sounds for an industrial effect. Pertucci...well, what hasn't he done? Rudess could get one of those funky organs like Neil Young used on Unplugged for a few songs. How about a stab at Progressive Country...that could be scary though.

I wouldn't mind seeing them excersise some Jazz Fusion styled songs (Instrumental of course) I'm sure with the skills they posess they can play some fusion for sure.

please no. I hate neo-prog-metal. (not so aggresively, but..)

I would like to have little bit symphonic, but raging, supertechnical, crazy

Where did you hear that? I've read a couple of recent interviews with Jordan and John Petrucci, and they both ultimately said they do not know what direction the album will take until they start writing again in the fall.

Some people like to have fun in their spare time. Maybe you can get off your high horse for a second and let people do what they want to without fear of being embarassed by someone who has no reason or authority to hand out such scorn. Stern Smile
