Subject: Prog Rock for a Wedding

i feel like prog rock and wedding's have come up before

BUT, my sister is actually letting me be the "DJ" at her wedding because she doesnt want to hire one.  She doesn't actually like prog rock, but i have pushed the idea in letting me choose the music, and she caved, so good things right? we shall see

what this thread is about is suggesting some prog rock songs for her wedding, needs to be danceable, upbeat, celabratory, accesible, you know what i mean

so start suggesting, anything goes, krautrock, symphonic, jazz fusion, italian, anything

and the first person that makes the joke of Supper's Ready or Gates of Delirium or any other epic gets a foot up the ass

i will keep this list updated to let you know what i have playing

also, if anyone has any experience with prog and wedding's, what works, what doesn't, please let me know

peace,

Aaron

I met a couple just married at the airport, when we were about to recieve Dream Theater here in monterrey!! and they have like a papaer that said "oue wedding song was EVE", that is a good ballad song!

-------------
I still can't get how Dream Theater music is created by humans

Dream Theater in Monterrey, Mexico   03.03.06   Unforgettable

In all seriousness, I don't think prog is the music for a wedding, but GG has some very danceable songs, like Playing the Game or Time to Kill would be a hit.

Can't go wrong with  as well, some of their more concise stuff, liek Long Distance Runaround.

Some later Rush and Genesis may also work.  Same for Peter Gabriel, circa So.

And can you think of a better slow dance than Afterglow by Genesis!?!?  I can't!

No VdGG or KC!!!!

As much as I love lengthy prog epics, I don't feel they would be appropriate for a wedding. I would suggest something from "Dark Side of the Moon", like for instance "Us and Them" (I've danced to it countless times!), if it were not for the dark, disturbing lyrics. Another song (well, actually an instrumental) which was very popular to dance to when I was younger was Santana's "Samba Pa Ti".  As to upbeat, uplifting songs, one of my current personal favourites is Hatfield and the North's "Share It".

i think there is plenty of prog that will work, the only problem is that nobody will know it, but if it's loud enough and people are intoxicated, maybe it can work

what i will probably do is half prog half regular wedding music (focusing on funk)

and NO BALLADS

I'd say...

Jethro Tull - Living in the Past, Teacher

Genesis - Your Own Special Way, Entangled, Squonk

Pink Floyd - Money, Us and Them, Another Brick pt II

Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart, Tempus Fugit, Going For The One

Rush - Superconductor, Closer to the Heart, The Big Money

Spock's Beard - All on a Sunday

The Beatles - Drive My Car, Taxman, pretty much anything upbeat

*** I'd say if you're going to play prog songs, they'll work best as slow songs. But if you want some prog as dance songs you'll probably have to get into the 80s era.

I wouldn't limit myself to prog though... it IS a wedding

My girlfriend and I will need a ProgDJ to our wedding I'M NOT JOKING... We love prog and we really want to play our favourite songs during our wedding...

Well, my suggestions: Maybe some songs of Porcupine Tree like Blackest Eyes or The Sound of Muzak... Pink Floyd's Us and Them, Bike and Another Brick in the Wall Part II... King Crimson Sleepless, Model Man and Thela Hun Ginjeet... Rush's Time Stand Still and Big Money... Queen (almost every album)... Yes: You have many "pop" song on 90125 and Big Generator... You can prove with Asia and GTR too... Peter Gabriel: So and Us... Genesis: almost everything of the 80's and 90's (but please NO Phil Collins solo albums)... Jethro Tull: Locomotive Breath and Fat Man... Maybe some songs of Tool and Dead Soul Tribe... ELP: Ces't la Vie, Still You Turn me On, From the Beginning... John Paul Jones with Diamanda Galas: SPort Life (full album)...

Laugh if you want, but for my wedding, we had the church organist play the Yes song, 'Wonderous Stories' on piano as a 'prelude' song, while people where being seated...and for the clincher, for our '1st dance' at the reception, we had the d.j. play the King Crimson song 'Walking on Air' from the album 'Thrak'......top that, folks!!!!

I would agree that there are many songs that could work, but didn't you say
that your sister doesn't like prog? Since it's her wedding, I would suggest
programing stuff that she likes.

I had a band of teenager musicians play at my wedding - they played Pink Flloyd, Beatles, Hendrix, Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream and other similar stuff.  It was great.

I'd second De Futura
I'm sure the crazed chanting and the the terrifying bass issued by Mr. Top would really be a hit
Seriously, though, I think Camel might work pretty well, or some PG solo, or some Gentle Giant (Reunion )
Even though it's not prog, you can't beat Van Morrison for music for a wedding, and your sister can't not love Van Morrison Go for Crazy Love, Into The Mystic, Sweet Thing, or Autumn Song
Try to avoid the KC (Trio might be nice though ), The Magma , and most of all, the Van Der Graaf Generator

I'll second Comus. And Supper's Ready - one of the lyrics is 'can't you feel
our souls ignite'. That's very wedding like.

But seriously, prog at a wedding would likely be a downer. Carpet of the
Sun and Let it Grow by Renaissance are my honest contributions if it must
happen. And You and I also was a pretty good suggestion.

Hello everyone

I for the first time here hope you accept me.

I hope you know that you can create an own musical site.
It very easily and interestingly. You can place the favourite songs (about wedding ).

I have small site about Santana and Queen (everyone can look and make better). By means of http://www.freewebtown.com I have inserted songs which can listen

Try also you !!      http://www.freewebtown.com - http://www.freewebtown.com

I wish all of good luck and good day

Led Zep's 'Stairway...', any Queen songs are always popular. As for Prog well you could try an slip in 'Us and Them', 'Another brick in the wall part II' (thats the one everyone knows), the Beatles but also put this one in 'Alive' by Circus Maximus a great prog-metal track thats all about love an feelings towards 'the one'. Ahh yeah plus how can you forget 'Show me the way to Amerillo'

Then pack the rest with the usual stuff like 90-2006 pop, 60's & 70's pop you know the stuff Sash, Lemar,Oasis, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, james 'makes my skin crawl' blunt, blah, blah  etc.

As great as prog music is, most of it is totally unsuitable for a wedding. Assuming that most people are fairly well p*ssed up by the evening, would they really want to listen to "Us and them" and "And You and I", or anything by Godspeed You Black Emperor? Well, not at any of the weddings I've been to.

There's only one band for a wedding, and that's the might Quo.

As much as prog is a part of my being, I have to agree. I've DJ'd too many times and have been to too many weddings.

Arron, if you must play prog, get the bride's aproval for each song first. Remember, it's their day, not yours and not a day to try to convert some friends and family to prog music, as great as that would be to pull off.

Have a lot (I mean LOTS) of standard dancing tunes on standby because if what you're playing isn't bringing people on the dancefloor, you'll have to change gears fast. Dancing tunes doesn't have to mean the latest prefab diva's latest, I'm talking "Mony Mony", "La Bamba", "Dancing Queen" and "YMCA"... heck, throw in a polka for fun... but not all the way through unless the dancefloor stays full and do it only once near the end of the night. I know these will hurt to play these three chord songs (I'm cringing just thinking it) but the name of the game is to get as many people to have fun and dance to something they know.

Prog can be beautiful, moving music that delivers the soul to another space and time but the sad fact is you got to play a familliar dance tune so that Aunt Ida will be inspired to grab cousin John's hand and boogie. Hate to sound like I'm raining on your parade, I'm just thinking about the bride, groom and a gathering of friends and family waiting for "one we know" while staring at an empty dance floor. (which I've seen too many times)

I have been to many of weddings and I must warn you that you're playing with fire. I would say don't play any(especially if the bride and groom don't like it) , but if you must.. keep em short and VERY few.( 1 or 2, at most)
